My iPad1 is working fine with the upgrade...

I do not notice much of an issue use mostly newspaper apps and weather some browsing and photos.

Tell your sister not to be afraid. Mine works just fine. :)

Typing doesn't lag and Safari has never crashed.

Good! I'm glad to hear that. I guess what with millions of users out there and only a few threads on the entire internet with a max of a couple of hundred people, it may not be a widespread issue. Depending on how hers performs when she receives it, I may order a refurbed 1st gen from Apple after Wednesday's release (maybe a price drop to $199 for a 16GB?) for light use around the house. I'm pretty sure checking e-mail and watching youtube won't require a dual core processor.

Thanks. My bad.

But now I have second thought about upgrading to 5 after all the things I read in this thread.

Just don't do it! you won't like it and Safari is mostly ruined, especially on forums and news sites plus it crashes like crazy

+1 for this.

My wife has iOS 5 on her iPad 1. It's a very frustrating and sluggish experience for her. Safari, in particular, is a horrible experience; not a smooth browsing experience and crashes frequently.

They seem to been the same for me. iOS4 and iOS5, maybe a little bit slower, but most have it greatly exaggerated. Safari doesn't crash every 10 mins and apps don't crash randomly unless you have like a really RAM consuming app in your multitask try or a buildup of lots of apps.

No it doesn't.

I have 2 iPad 1's both running iOS 5.0.1.

Yes they sometime do crash but my iPhone 4 also sometimes crashes. iOS 5 works great with the iPad 1.

Ugh, there's so much conflicting advice in these threads. I will update here later in the week and let people know how my situation goes and how the current refurbs from Apple are responding with iOS 5.
