iOS 5 Restore from Back-Up Camera Roll Issues

I restored from my back-up. I got only about 900/1300 photo from my camera roll. Then I hard reset the phone and something even weirder... the 900 pics doubled.

Still missing about 400 latest photos.

Someone please help me.

As the other guy said, its a beta. How do you expect us to help you and why were you using it in the first place without backing up your data?

You realise it's a beta version?

Hope you don't need those 400 photos.

I updated to the 4.3.3 and i lost a bunch of photos too, i mean i only have 132 out of ~500!!!!! I found this article http://menoob.com/iphone/how-to-rec...s-photos-contacts-notes-sms-call-history-etc/ but i downloaded diskaid (for windows) and it can't really open old backup files. Btw, i lost the photos in my library in a folder which i dont remember the name, and only the Camera Roll photos survived the update. all the others are lost! and i dont have them in my pc! how can i recover them from an old backup?
please tell me i havent lost them all.... otherwise i really gotta hate apple! why the hell would they delete content like that>????

edit: I downloaded iPhone Backup Extractor, and it only shows 130 photos in the Backups...
THANK YOU APPLE!!!!!!
edit2: Thank god for external hard disk PC backups...

Tip: DON'T RELY ON APPLE FOR BACKUPS. BACKUP YOUR IMPORTANT FILES BY HAND IN YOUR PC AND AN EXTERNAL DRIVE!

Tip: Don't install iOS betas. They aren't meant for daily use. Just for developers to test out their apps and to iron out bugs.

there's a reason you're not meant to restore from backup on betas and you just discovered it lol

Same thing happening here for iOS 5 beta 4. Installing the update OTA erased all my pics (which I knew would happen) so I figured I'd restore my newly made backup to get my pics back. Well, only 131 out of about 700 decided to be restored back to my phone. So I synced with iPhoto, which brought it back but added a ton more albums than I wanted. So I unselected the box in iTunes and clicked Sync again but the pics stayed... So, I'm on to the 3rd restore now. Trial and error FTW!

Obviously, your mileage may vary, but I think I found a very easy fix for this. So, I updated to b4 and all of my photos were gone. I restored from the backup, and while, when opening Photos, my iPhone said I had no photos (even after restore), I could see the thumbnail of my most recent photo (actually, a screen shot) when I opened Camera app. This suggested that while I couldn't access the photos, they were on the phone.

So, I opened up the Mac app PhoneView where I could clearly see my photos were indeed on the phone. As soon as I attempted to view one of the photos in PhotoView, all of my photos reappeared in the Photos app.

TL;DR: Missing photos in ios5 b4? Restore from most recent backup. Open PhoneView on Mac with iPhone connected. Select a photo. Tada! Photos are once again accessible on iPhone

ETA: And all of my photos are here, by the way.

It's actually illegal to install beta versions without paying the 99 dollars to be in the dev program.

For the folks running iOS 5 beta did the release notes help where it describes the known conditions where photos can be impacted and the steps to "recover" them?

Tip: DON'T RELY ON APPLE FOR BACKUPS. BACKUP YOUR IMPORTANT FILES BY HAND IN YOUR PC AND AN EXTERNAL DRIVE!

That's good advice for everyone on any system using any application. The iPhone "backup" is a copy made to your hard drive. It doen't have to be by hand or to an external drive, but if you want to keep it then you have to protect it. External drives are great but if you keep them next to your computer, fire/flood/theft will take out both copies. For my kids pics, I used to burn DVD's and leave them at the office. Now I use Carbonite but there are free options out there.

Can confirm that this worked for me as well.

Help

Have you enabled iCloud in the settings menu and under backup and storage enabled iCloud backup there?

Back up and storage menu??
In General i have iCloud, when i put in my details it says "Move your MobileMe Account to iCloud" - "Go to me.com on your computer to move your information to iCloud"

You go to me.com, you can't do anything

There's your problem. You've not got an iCloud account. I'm guessing your MobileMe is your iTunes account? This is why you have no iCloud functionality.

If so then MobileMe is not playing nice with iCloud whilst in beta.

I registered on the forum JUST so I can reply to this annoying response and write this:

I have lost data from iTunes backups from RELEASE VERSIONS. Multiple times.

So next time before you reply to someone saying an obvious very important tip with some useless "don't install iOS betas" personal opinion ********, you should respect that just maybe he is saying something wise.

Fact 1: iTunes has always liked to randomly delete backups
Fact 2: There's NO WAY TO BACK UP THE CAMERA ROLL EXCEPT THROUGH iTUNES.

No, e-mailing yourself/sending yourself the pictures through some method and then making them an album in iPhoto / My Pictures folder / Aperture / however other way is NOT .. NOT^500000 a viable solution, I repeat NOT!

You could think of this several ways. 1. you could think of it as wasting your breath. as you cannot go to the iOS beta download page without seeing the warning "this is not meant for daily use devices" 2. you're only saying that out of an emotional response that he wrote "Tip: Don't rely on Apple for backups"

That tip is A) not mentioned by Apple or anywhere else and B) A HELL of a lot more useful.. why?

because I know people who have lost EVERYTHING because they relied on Apple backups on RELEASE versions of iTunes and iOS.

If you're not going to help. GTFO. I say that as a Google user trying to find an answer to this problem.

Seriously, no. GTFO. Why? Because I am SICK of finding search results in Google that look promising because the user has the exact issue but then it's filled with absolutely useless cynical criticisms, insults and other ********.

Thank you for reading this PSA for frustrated Google searchers everywhere. Sadly this cannot be put in BOLD TEXT on someone's monitor as soon as they post a cynical ******** post that is of no help whatsoever.
