Hi,
Can anyone recommend a book or course to get me started on ios 8 and swift. I would like to learn the basics(camera, bluetooth, microphone, maps apis etc) and maybe some spritekit too.

Thanks

Apple did come out with a free guide on iBooks store.

But I would check out the complete iOS 8 course on stacksocial.com. I did buy their iOS 7 course (not the iOS 8 one yet), and the guy who does the course (Eliot Arntz) is a pretty amazing teacher.

Does it teach me everything about ios 8 , I would like some sprite kit and game integration. I dont have obj-c knowledge but I know Java and OOP basic

Yep, it is extremely comprehensive. I don't know how deeply they cover SpriteKit though, but even if they don't cover it at all, I would recommend taking the entire course first to get the language down, learn how to implement API's, etc. then I would learn SpriteKit after you have iOS development down pat. I would definitely recommend the course. I truly cannot overstate how pleased I am with their iOS course, it took me from zero (with some minor OOP experience) to making really cool apps.

It is very comprehensive, I've been doing their iOS 7 course from the same guys since May and I'm 80% through it. Then again I have a job and college so I do maybe one or two lessons when I have the time, but has truly been an amazing course. If I had it to do over again I would have gladly paid 4x what it cost.

Did you get it for $500 ?
Have you published any apps in the app store and made some extra money? That is what I would like to do.

I dont know if I should buy it for $89, I already bought an ios 8 course for $29 and got refudned and still got the lecutres so I might wait till the ios 8 from bitfountain gets pirated .

How are you going to feel once you bust your butt to write an app, market it, put everything you have into it, and see it get pirated and downloaded thousands of times with nothing coming back to reward you for all your efforts. Will you be cool with piracy then?

I am saying that if you can get something for free, why not ? I am not the one pirating it, so I am doing nothing wrong, If I cant afford it I still wont buy it so they still wont get my money so instead of me getting nothing ill still get what I need.

If it was some fat-cat RIAA industry record producer you were pirating I wouldn't really care, but the guy who makes that course I suggested to you is a really awesome and hard working teacher. It's wrong to pirate his hard work, he deserves every penny and then some.

Yes he does but i am not the one pirating his course. But I think if he makes around 100k from a course is enough

I just bought the iOS 8 Course with Swift from StackSocial for $89 (91% off the usual price of $998). This is a GREAT deal, and the fact that some scumbags are waiting for free pirated copies is absolutely disgusting to me...especially in light of the fact that they want to learn how to PROGRAM! If people just pirated software, then there would be no work for programmers, or aspiring programmers like yourself. Why don't you go out, earn a few dollars delivering pizzas or flipping burgers, and pay for the course rather than steal it.

It's normally $1,000 for this course, and you can now buy it for less than $100. What's the problem? Are you really so poor you can't afford $89? I suppose you spent less than $89 on the device you're using to get on this forum? Perhaps you spend less than $89 PER MONTH on the service you use for cable/phone/internet? Only a homeless person who happens to want to learn Swift can't afford $89. Everyone else CAN afford it, but they're just too cheap to purchase goods and services legitimately.

Once again, the link for BUYING this course is here: https://stacksocial.com/sales/the-complete-ios-8-developers-course-w-swift-pre-release

But if you can get something for free why pay for it ? thats the simple question, where you live you have high salaries etc, expecially in uk and us here salaries are not high. I have already bought a course so that is whats keeping me back, but I might buy the stack social deal but I dont know if ill have time togo through it all as there is much to learn.

A simple answer: you pay for it because it's the right, ethical thing to do.

But it's a more complex issue, that deals with morals and entitlement as well.

Do you think it would be okay for one of us to go to the place you live and take all your belongings? Why should we pay for those things if we can get them for free?

You wont be able to enter my house haha. But piracy is a different thing, it has been living for a long time, and will NEVER be stopped by any way.

----------

Is it basically a full course? What will I be able to do after completing it? Will I be able to develop ios apps and games and use spriteKit and metal and different ios api's camera bluetooth etc ?

The normal price for the course on bitfountain is $499 and not $1000 as shown on stacksocial.

Yeah, I noticed that too! What's up with that? Why does StackSocial say it's $998 for the course when it's listed at $499? Did the price USED to be $998 when they started selling it, and then they lowered it? Or is it false advertising on the part of StackSocial?

Pretty sure it has always been $499 which is the same as their ios 7 course.

They have three courses. The iOS 7 and 8 courses, but they also have a free game development course using spritekit. I would recommend doing the iOS 7 course before doing either of the other two.
