I am also on 7.1.2 It is smooth but it lacks various functionality (Eg. Apps connection with Google Drive) which I need. May apps which need atleast iOS 8 dont work.
Why is it not recommended to update to 9.2 ?

Both my iPads 2 on 9.3. I recommend the update.
But Apple just pulled back the update for older devices right? Also I need JB, so if 9.3 is fast, I will wait for its JB and then finally upgrade. I have iPad MINI 2 btw not iPad 2. Hope they are same.

How do you describe is the performance compared to 9.2 or 8.x ?

Better than 9.2 by a hair and more stable than 8.x. Imo

You can look at my previous posts above where I state that iOS 9 on my iPad 2 is OK, but if I had it to do over again I would NEVER have upgraded from iOS 7. The slowdown in performance is significant and very irritating. In the last two months or so, I've pretty much stopped using my iPad 2 as a result.

If you want the latest functionality you should get an iPad Air or Air 2. And if you look at the big picture they aren't that expensive if you get a low end or refurbed unit. When the successor to the iPad Air 2 is announced and the prices for the Air and Air 2 drop even more that's what I'm going to do.

My iPad 2 has at least a good year left on 9.3. Why spend a cent more on a perfectly viable device?

Unless you have a death wish for your iPad, DO NOT UPDATE.REPEAT.DO NOT UPDATE.My iPad Mini 1 which a smaller iPad 2 is nearly unusable on iOS 9.i7guy uses his iPad 2 by disabling all animations and graphics, something not everyone likes to do

iOS 9 will cause your iPad to be horribly laggy

I have to agree. iPad 2/3 in iOS 7.1.2 is perfectly usable. iOS 9 may be ok in some applications, but many things just become so much slower that it's not fun anymore...

I won't be upgrading my A5 iPad Mini to iOS 9 given the performance drop. It's pretty obvious in some YouTube comparison videos that iOS 9 basically cripples anything with the A5. iOS 7 was faster, but I'm happy to have the final revision of iOS 8 running on the iPad given the increase in features. It's a slow down no doubt, but not nearly as much of one as iOS 9.

They are not the same at all, the iPad mini 2 is much more powerful than an iPad 2 (it's pretty much a smaller iPad Air) and should handle the update quite differently.

I've mentioned this before - I have an old iPad 2 that's been passed down to my 4 yr old daughter. When I upgraded it to 9.0 it was so bad that she literally cried. I waited for a few days to see if the iPad improved. It didn't so I downgraded it to 8.4.1. The screaming stopped. I don't dare risk more screaming so I think I'll keep it there. 9.3 might be better but I dare not risk it. If a 4 yr old can tell the difference it can't be good.

Looks like I posted in wrong thread then. I wanted to ask about iPad Mini 2, NOT iPad 2
