The battery life improvemets from iOS 8 to iOS 9 are quite substantial. The only thing that'd be worsened is performance if you do decide to update.

I'm on 9.2.1 on my iPhone 5s and it's generally great, aside from the lag here and there. But I'm definitely loving the increase in battery life. Looks like Apple did some dark magic. :D

I regretted updating to 9.0 till 9.1. It was utterly crap. Slow and crashed all the time. Luckily everything changed in 9.2. My experience has been great and you shouldn't worry.

When iOS 10 arrives, you should do the same. Wait till 10.2 or 10.4. Anything before makes you a beta tester.

Safari works a lot better in iOS 9. That's about it I think. And ad-blockers: web pages load faster, useless cellular data, and less ram.
On the other hand, I hate the new music app. iOS 8.3 music was the best.

It works better than 8 on my old 5S that I'm basically using as an iPod now.

I am really hesitant to install the 9.2 update on my 5s.
Has anyone experienced any issues or lagging problems on iPhone 5s?
I do still want to keep my 5s because I love the smaller size compared to the 6s.
Still running 8.3 on it.

Thanks!

9.2 is working fine for me, loving the fact I can now use adblockers!

iOS9.2 runs pretty good on my iPhone 5s. Previous iOS9.x. versions were not so great.
It is pretty stable and smooth and I have the idea my battery lasts longer.

I'm also a user of third party keyboards like Swype, Go Keyboard and they were pretty smooth on my iPhone in Spotlight area too.

I do still have lag issues when showing a third party keyboard (e.g. Swype, Go Keyboard) on my iPad mini2 running 9.2 which wasn't there in iOS8.3 and 8.4. They both released recent iOS9 updates. Unfortunately also Path Input on iPhone and iPad version both have major lag but this has probably also to do that they didn't update their apps in ages.
I have heard that this would be fixed in 9.2.1 beta. I will wait untill the final release to see if that is really the case.

My girlfriend's is running iOS 9.2 on her iPhone 5s smoothly. It doesn't anything wrong. iOS 9.2 supports iPhone 5s to upgrade, even iPhone 4s.

I honestly think it's fine. Still runs fast and smooth for me.

The thing is iOS 8 the apps launch a tad faster which is the main difference. Otherwise, speed performance it's not far off. You get the battery saver mode and a sweet keyboard with a better, easier to read font.

Otherwise just stick with iOS 8. My gf has iOS 8 on her 5s and honestly there's not a big difference as some of the hyperbole would lead you to believe. But it is noticeable especially in terms of how fast apps are launched and the speed of the animations.

So if you feel it's best to wait for a later update, then by all means stick to iOS 8, as Once you update you can't go back.

iOS 9 was supposed to improve, not slow down, but Apple seems to be having difficulty with that. It's worked for some devices like the 4s. But for the 64 bit devices in the 5s,6,6+ it hasn't proven to be faster than iOS 8 yet.

But iOS 9 isn't some lag fest lol. It runs fine on the 5s

Well according to this article iOS 9 crippled older devices such as the 4s.

Because one update the operative system for battery life ?
Well, ever since I upgraded to 9.1 and 9.2 battery life has tanked to the point where I always need to keep a charger on me for a phone that I use maybe 1 hour a day. But my experience is also an anomaly.
