Does using PAC slow down browsing?
And how does it block in-app ads, since apps display ads even when not connected to wi-fi. So does it help to block in-app ads?

I noticed no slowdown in browsing. Running speedtest gives me the expected wifi speeds.

Apps display the last loaded ad when offline, I guess. The PAC removes the ads - you can see the placeholder or blank space where the ad should be but no ad

Apps also display ads even when not connected at all last time - it just pops up. I usually keep network off when not needed and still ads show up.

This is definitely one of the great features of ios9. Now how about all the spam in my inbox??

Ask your provider for better spam detection? I don’t receive any spam with disposable and unique email addresses and a cautious approach to handing out my real email address. It’s so easy to avoid it. I don’t even know why I still have a spam mailbox.

My mail provider is Apple. I have the most spam in my iCloud account. On my Mac mail filters those out acceptably. Not on iOS. I have a google Mail account as well. No problem there as Google is great at filtering spam.

This is strange because Mac mail and iOS mail should be exactly the same in terms of filtering spam using an iCloud mail account. I haven't noticed a difference between the two. They seem to be mirrored.

http://murphyapps.co/blog/2015/7/21/teasing-crystal-an-ad-blocker-for-ios-9

If you’re lucky, you might be able to participate in a beta programme. There is a stunning silence on this front so far. An adblocker in the App Store is a gold vein waiting to be found.

Little late replying to this -I'm the developer of Crystal.

Sorry for the silence, totally not intended, but there really hasn't been much to say while I've been developing it. I've been posting a lot to twitter, but nothing major enough to blog about.

As of right now it's mostly finished, apart from the UI design. Currently I have a limited amount of testers using Crystal, and I am letting a few more people in every day. You can find out a bit more about Crystal beta in this blog post and sign up to become a tester. The first 1000 to sign up are guaranteed to get in once TestFlight is allowed for iOS 9 applications and there is a chance to be randomly selected to join the limited beta (limited to the amount of UDID's I can register on my dev account)

I made another update last night where I benchmarked 10 common websites and show how they perform with Crystal. You can find out more here - TL;DR: On average, pages loaded 74% faster with Crystal and used 53% less bandwidth.

Last thing - There is a small splash page I made for Crystal, http://murphyapps.co/crystal

If you have any questions, fire away

I am sorry, that was really poor writing on my part. What I wrote was about adblocker development in general. I thought there would be more excitement about it among the bigger players and that a wee competition would ensue. I linked your blog post as an example of a place where interested users can get a hold of an adblocker soon.

I am super stoked for your app and can’t wait to try it! If you need any assistance with translation, I can help with German and Dutch.

No problem. PM me you're email and iPhone/iPad UDID and I'll add you to the next wave I'm due to send out tonight .

I'm ok for German translation, but Dutch would be helpful in the future. I think 1.0 will be English only for now though. Depends if I finish it with enough time to add translations.

Oh hey I got your email yesterday about that crystal beta update. By any chance can you add me to your next wave as well?

I applied when I saw your post on reddit, will I be in the wave you send out tonight?

I'm overwhelmed with the interest for this app. I'll add you two (please PM email address and UDID of iPhones & iPads you want to test Am3r1ca16 & JXShine) - But I'm afraid I can't handle more requests for direct access.

If you're interested in joining the beta - Click here for all the info.

I've also applied poor you ;-) will wait for official launch via TestFlight. If you can use help with Dutch or French translation .., maybe put the language file somewhere so people can translate it and send it back to you. You might end with. 12 languages in no time. But specify length for each to respect to avoid overflow in your app. Had this problem for another app.

I applied for your beta too on your website. If you need help with Portuguese translation I can give you a hand.

I converted the MVPS host file (http://winhelp2002.mvps.org/hosts.txt) to json format to use it with BlockParty, but it doesn't seem to block anything.

You can check the file here : https://dl.dropboxusercontent.com/u/6766348/blockerList.json

Is it too big (too many rules) for the safari content blocker ?

Just tested your json and it doesn't block latimes main ad. So I merged your json with block party default json and it's working.

At least now we know the size of the json isn't the problem.

edit: ok, now i installed on my iPhone and it isn't working

I tweeted about the Crystal adblock when I saw it, filled in the beta request straight away. I think most or all slots are taken now, which is a shame.

I did stumble across another one on github; Open Adblock - an open source ad blocker.
I don't have a link to hand sorry. It's a self-compile in Xcode one, and seems to work okay so far.
It displays some whitespace where the ad would be, but it's not as big a space as the ad would've taken up.

It's still not complete, as the toggles don't currently do anything. It's just a block-all right now, but looks like it'll eventually support toggling on/off for adblock and tracking separately.
It has blacklist/whitelist placeholder menu items too, but can't currently add to the list.
Works well enough for now though.

Open Adblock can be found here : https://github.com/jusleg/OpenAdblock

At the moment it's the same filters as BlockParty. I checked the source code and it doesn't load any other json file than the same as BlockParty.

So I signed up and got an email about this a few days ago. Does that mean I'm signed up to receive an invite to install Crystal whenever it's available for testing? When should I expect this? I just got a replacement iPhone 6 Plus so do I need to sign up again or just send my new iPhone UDID? Thank you!
