Prior to IOS 9 my 6 plus worked perfectly in my car. ( 2015 VW Passat -hold the emission jokes for now). After IOS 9 the phone still registers and connects, and plays media, but when a call comes in, it goes directly to the phone, not the car system. I have de-paired, re-set network settings, re-set car settings and it still happens. I am not going to go crazy since I will be turning in the 6 Plus on Friday and getting a 6S Plus. I will update this post at that time.

iOS 9 Broke Bluetooth connection in car

I have the same problem in my 2014 Nissan Juke. Can't use siri in the car as it doesn't route the audio to the car. Same issue exists in 9.1 beta too.
Seems iOS 9 has had a number of things gone wrong for different people.
For me, it's not compatible with my computer anymore since I can't install iTunes 12.3. Thanks Apple.
The typical response is that Apple users should not expect continued support unless they have the latest of everything.
But, with cars, it'll be interesting to see them apply that logic.
Personally, I go with connection options which will work with any device so that I'm not tied to a software compatibility issue.
The community has had car audio problems with many of the iOS updates. Sometimes they're fixed in later updates.
I'd definitely recommend making some noise with Apple in addition to filing bug reports / feature requests.
You can't be expected to buy a new car for every iOS version.

I had the same problem with iOS9 betas and my VW Passat. Now with 9.1 beta it works as it should for me. Didn't try official iOS 9.0 though...
OP: Update. Loaded 9.0.1 on my Iphone 6 Plus and had the same problem. Incoming calls would go to phone and not car system, although media would play through the car and my headsup display showed I was connected. I then switched phones to my wife's Galaxy S6, connected it and when a call came in, the car audio picked it up. So it is definitely something in IOS 9 and 9.0.1. This sucks. I thought Apple had smart guys.
You know you can select the audio output in iOS right? Select the car system during a phone call.

That defeats the purpose of being hands free. Never did I have to do that in the past to answer a call, but with iOS 9 I do? Seems we're moving backwards here
As I said before, I had the same issue with iOS9.0 betas and my VW Passat (now I am on iOS9.1 beta and it works ok) - but in my case it was impossible to change this option in the phone. The phone "claimed" that my calls went through the car, while the car "claimed" the opposite.
I'll try to test my second phone (with iOS 9.0.1) with the car - if it won't work, then the conclusion will be that they probably solved it in iOS9.1.

I have a 2013 VW Golf and I have issues as well.
I've found out a few things regarding this.
My iPhone 6 will connect to the radio and play music with no issues.
Then..
Call comes in.
If I pick up with the wheel button everything works fine.
If I pick up by clicking the green button on the iPhone the call get's routed to iPhone (not the iPhone speaker but as if I had the phone in my ear), looking at the phone it still shows the symbol as you posted above saying it is playing thru bluetooth device (which it's not).
Haven't tried picking up the call via the car display unit to see what happens.
Its typical for it to route through the method the call is answered. Same thing applies to bluetooth headsets.
I have apple music problems over bluetooth in cars (its a playlist/HUD thing when you shuffle it all borks up).
Also, ios 9 has a hard time when you are listening to music but then switch to, say, a podcast from the podcast app. ios will just refuse to have the podcast start playing. YOu have to hit play a few times before itunes relents.

So why the phone shows me the audio being routed to Bluetooth but plays on the phone?
Behavior has changed slightly for me with iOS 9.1, iPhone 6, and 2011 Nissan LEAF.
- Bluetooth audio works fine*
- Phone calls go through Bluetooth just fine
- Siri uses Bluetooth audio instead of Bluetooth phone - this is an improvement
- *However, after getting a phone call, Bluetooth audio fails until you go into Settings/Bluetooth and tap on the car's entry to reconnect. In iOS 8 and below, Bluetooth audio resumed just fine after a phone call.
That appears to be a bug, I notice that too even with speaker btw (there will be a check mark next to the bluetooth device while the sound is coming from the speaker on the phone). What I was mentioning was that the sound goes to the device used for initiating the action.
I believe what the OP is experiencing is a different problem altogether where the calls are going directly to the phone instead of the bluetooth at all.
I had the same issue with Siri since the first iOS 9 beta. The phone connects property (although ironically just an hour ago I tried to make a call and it wasn't connected). Whenever I try to use the voice control/Siri, the screen on the phone changes, but it does not hear anything I say. Pretty annoying since I use it a lot to send messages and call people when stuck in traffic.
It might be, but previous to iOS 9 the sound would always route via bluetooth no matter where I picked up the call.
Mine works the same way on iOS 8.4.1. If I answer on the phone that is where the sound is routed. However I'm testing it using a BT headset, this maybe different in a vehicle.
Well for me on my Mazda Connect 9.0 was ok both my phone and my audio profile did a 100% connect every time I started the car. But 9.1 busted it. Only the phone would connect and the address book (so I could call and receive calls via button on steering and use of other controls to go thru contacts. However the audio profile would not connect any longer with 9.1 (all versions) I was using a 128 GB 6 Plus. Well I got lucky and got my new 128 GB 6s Plus on opening day. Setup with 9.1 and while there was one or two failures of the audio it now seems to almost connect 100% of time (or at least close).
Something in 9.1 and the bluetooth of my old 6 plus did not like each other and Mazda Connect. I had to disconnect phone (not unpair) and reconnect and then most of time it would load the audio profile for my music playlists and such.
So the new 6s Plus fixes most of the problem which then seems to me to be both a hardware and software problem?
UPDATE: Day two of my new 6s Plus and the 9.1 beta 2. Problems are returning after working perfectly for one day with Mazda Connect. However first I am still maybe getting half the time whereby the bluetooth connects fine (it was 100% almost before where it did not connect with my old 6 Plus and 9.1 without disconnecting bluetooth and reconnecting. Also for first time ever i had a failure of the whole phone twice not connecting even phone. Never happened with any of the iOS betas, at least phone would connect just not the audio profile whereby my music and such can be played.

Have you tried reconnecting bluetooth? I also have a VW - and I've been using io9 since dev beta 2 - there were a few initially hiccups early on but it syncs perfectly now, and has been for months - including the stable ios9 and the current beta. I'd recommend flipping the bluetooth switches on / off - turn on bluetooth search in your car, and honestly you might need to reset the settings on the phone.
Although you are talking to VW person just wanted to comment that this is my typical way to deal with the issue in my Mazda. Reconnect never works for the audio part (music) I have disconnect and reconnect and then the audio also connects, sometimes twice before it works.
This issue was worse on my 6 Plus, it almost works perfectly other than some first hiccups with my new 6s Plus and 9.1 UPDATE: It has gotten worse with my 6s Plus so now that around half the time on day two it was not connecting audio profile of phone (music)
But still so far bettter results with my 6s Plus And my 6s plus has all my restored setup, files, apps, passwords, ect from my last archived backup of my 6 plus on the 24th of september. So the setup and all is almost 100% identical. Only difference is now I am using it on my new 6s Plus. That implies some hardware variable to me between my 6 Plus and my 6s Plus. But then everything about the 6s Plus is a major improvement over my 6 Plus as much as I loved it. Way faster response on the fingerprint sensing (to point some find it too fast), faster WIFI, faster in all ways, very noticeably fast and my 6 plus was not a slouch.
