Lionz is a free content blocker that is geared towards the 'middle of the road' user. A 'middle of the road' user is someone who doesn't want to have to worry about tweaking every site he or she comes to. And at the same time, still wants a few user toggle options to further restrict images, scripts and fonts.
Lionz app design - C +
Although the Lionz (red) logo is catchy, the app theme is rather bland and anemic looking against the white background.
In regards to user options, Lionz offers toggles for "Ads and Tracking," "Images," "Scripts," and "Fonts." The user also has the ability to Whitelist sites, reports ads or problems with a site or the app, refer to FAQ's, Rate the app, visit Lionz on Facebook and Twitter, and view another app listing (Ad-Blocker TV Chromecast Browser) by the same developer.
Aside from the design being bland and anemic, it also suffers from a plethora of typos, which may be due to English not being the developer's native language.
The following are examples found in the app: Instead of the user option saying 'Replay tutorial,' it says, "Reply tutorial." Under the "Report Ads / Problems option" (which brings up the email option to the developer) the first sentence (built into the email by default) says, "Momentarily the following app still contains ads:" when he was trying to have it say, 'At the moment, the following website(s) still contain ads:' The Facebook option reads "Lionz at facebook," instead of Lionz on Facebook." The Twitter option also reads "Lionz at Twitter," instead of 'Lionz on Twitter.' There are also language based typos in the FAQ section as well as on the iTunes Preview page description.
I will be the first to admit that I make typos on a regular basis. Sometimes, my brain gets going faster than my fingers. And often times, I find myself reviewing reviews and posts I have made, so that I can correct problems.
I recognize that Lionz is a free content blocker. And I thank the developer for giving of his time to make it available. At the same time, I believe that attention to detail is important, especially when one is trying to build a customer base. I don't know if the developer offered beta testing prior to release. Either way, I believe that these language based problems and typos need to be corrected immediately.
Lionz blocking power - B+
I found Lionz's blocking power to be commiserate with many of the other content blockers already reviewed. It to suffered from some of the same blocking / rendering problems as several other cut and paste JSON loaded apps.
* Social widgets and comments were not blocked.
* Sponsored ads on Yahoo were blocked (using iPhone 6).
* Picture pertaining to an article did not render at all on The Wall Street Journal.
* Fox News rendered as it should, but failed to correctly load and play videos.
* Your experience may differ from mine, in regards to ad-blocking ability and speed.
Lionz's blocking power was tested using the following websites Time Magazine,* CNN, Yahoo, MacRumors, Amazon, Fox News,**** Huffington Post, iMore, The Verge, National Geographic, Crackle, Forbes Magazine, The Wall Street Journal,**** Kat.cr, The Pirate...****** MacWorld,** MSNBC, Apple, Ebaums World, ImDB, YouTube, Hotels.com, Digiday, Reddit, Craigslist (local), Cult of Mac, blog.buttermouth, ESPN, Welt.de, Ciudad.com.ar,***** ABC.com.py, Times of Israel,*** 9to5toys, Straits Times,* Str.sg, info.singtel.com, Times of India, Indian Express, Cnet,**** Boston.com and Courier.co.uk.****
Unless otherwise noted by the * symbol, all sites loaded correctly without any pop ups or blank advertising boxes.
* Site did not load
** Site loaded correctly but clicking links on main page or subsequent page didn't work.
*** Site loaded correctly but did not block all ad(s) on main page or subsequent site pages.
**** Site did not correctly load all non ad page elements (e.g. pictures, video, text etc.)
***** Site loaded correctly with no ads or pop ups. Empty advertisement blocks were noted.
****** Site loaded correctly but did not stop pop up messages or redirects
Lionz speed - A
While Lionz may have problems with several sites, I found it to be fast (overall) with most of the sites tested. By fast, I mean I wasn't tapping my foot waiting, or looking at my watch counting the seconds until a site finished loading (outside of ThePirate...).
* Your experience may vary from mine.
* I do not place as much emphasis (performance or grading wise) on speed as a lot of other people.
Lionz's price and developer contact - A
The app is free and that is why it got an A rating.
I did not contact the developer prior to review, and cannot speak to strengths or weaknesses with customer service.
Lionz overall rating - B
If you can look past the language based typos and lackluster design, Lionz performs very well (as a whole) in blocking ads. I did not find any broken user options in my testing.
I would like to see the developer correct the problems mentioned, as well as adding toggles for social media widget and comment blocking.
