Dear All,

I was wandering if I am the only having the following problems after upgrade to iOS9 on iPhone 4S:

- Personal hotspot not working anymore (I can see it in setting I can switch it on, but cannot connect any of my devices, and I mean: MacBook Pro 13", Lenovo X200T, LG G2 Mini, iPad Mini). I did not have any problems on iOS 8.4

- Sometimes (it happens 1-2 times per day) when I click on the phone icon it just stuck and I cannot do anything, cannot dial a number, nothing, I need to switch off/on the phone in order to be able to dial a number.

I already tried to:

- switch off/on the phone
- reboot the phone
- restore the phone

Unfortunately still having the same problems. The only plus was that I have more free space on my iPhone after the restore...

Thank you in advance for your reply, comment or feedback.

Am posting this from wireless tether from iPhone 4s hotspot

Had to turn off the hotspot and then back on again and make sure the wifi option was selected.

Other wise it seems to default to usb and bluetooth only - no wifi.

if you have problems connecting to a wifi hotspot with any device, and it is encrypted, the one sure fire thing
to try is to rule out "math errors", YES i have actually seen this happen ! and use the preshared key instead.

i learned this because amazon was telling people that there was an incompatibility between the kindle and the airport extreme, and it turned out to be a math error and amazon's fault.

your wifi password is not really sent to the router to join it, the hash is used. and when the hashes don't match up it won't connect

when you connect to a wifi network that uses WPA or WPA2 you do a mathematical equation where you take your network name and your password and it is used to generate a 64 byte hash.

how to try the hash, don't worry nothing is transmitted over the net

-

go to https://www.wireshark.org/tools/wpa-psk.html
give it your WIFI network name (don't give it any typos, for example netgear )
give it your wifi password ( example password1)
wireshark will spit out the actual preshared key that you use to join the wifi network
which would be 953568b49d9f4564f01d1c5dbecfcaba3cf27d27ad141673d266ccdb6c28446f

use that as your wifi password and see if it fixes your problems

copy and paste is your friend!

you did not define ' won't connect ' so i had to mention this

other then that error try moving closer, or reset network settings. i don't know what else to try,
perhaps lenovoa or lg g2 knows of a bug and has a fix

another problem with wpa2 is the keys will roll and every so often (typically) after one hour you have to reconnect to the wifi hotspot. if this is your problem, i don't know what to suggest, other then contacting the makers of the wifi gear

your post mentioned lg g2 and levono laptops , so i understood your question has nothing to do with the instant hotspot feature that is on iCloud, i have that problem all the time where the iPad or mac cant turn on the hotspot on the iPhone and i have to keep retrying

Since upgrading to ios9 on my 5s it will no longer tether using the iPhone plugged in to my MacBook Pro to tether. It WILL work if I use it to tether via wifi. I am having a few other issues with iOS 9.

I would like to thanks to all of you.

rigormortis - I tried your advise with the preshared key and it was stil not working. The problem was on the iPhone itself. I tried a couple of things I had in my mind, but it was still not working. I am not sure what fixed the problem. I have reset the network settings 3 times, I have also change the name of my phone (thanks BlythGav), I have switch off/on the phone, even reboot it... The last thing I did was to reset the Settings -> Cellular -> Cellular Data Network -> Reset Settings (Not sure if it makes something different from Settings -> General -> Reset -> Reset Network Settings)...

So the good news is that the Personal Hotspot now works even if my phone stuck when trying to use the phone as a phone...

I hope Apple will fix this as soon as possible. iOS 8.4 was OK but 9 is not at all and it has to many bugs. If the company name was microsoft it is OK, but for Apple it is unacceptable.

Once again thanks everyone for the help.

Same problem:

iPhone 6 connects fine via wifi tether.

iPhone 6 will NOT connect via USB tether. Prefer USB tether so it charges at the same time when I'm tethering off it.

Hope Apple fixes this soon...

You need OSX 10.11 GM. Then works!!!

Not sure about that - Works for me both ways - wifi an USB

beta verson 10.11 15a278b and OS9.1 beta

when I turn on hot spot I am offered a choice either wifi or USB - once that choice is made it stays that way until turned off and back on.

iOS 9.1 sounds good and will fix a lot of problems, this is for sure.

Any idea when it will be officially released?

I am getting confused

is 9.0.1 supposedly newer than 9.1

this does not make sense?

iOS 9.1 is beta, as is OS X 10.11.x at this time (El Capitan is not yet released)
iOS 9.0.1 was released today - it, as well as iOS 9, is a general full release.

It seems that this issue is not limited only to iPhone 4s... In previous iOS updates I have never seen problems like this, some slowness in the phone speed yes, but I have never had something not working. I am wondering if the new iPhone suffers the same problems :)

I am not sure if Apple are not pushing the new iPhone sales (temporary spoiling the old ones) but this is definitely not the way to do it...

Apple, I want my personal discount to buy the new iPhone (but not the pink one).

Thanks.

Here and there
Had the same problem after upgrading to iOS 9.0.1. Stuck in a BnB with no internet!

Just fixed it by doing a reset...press home and power buttons until logo appears.

This seems to fix a myriad of problems post-upgrade.

I have to agree about the new software slowing the phone down. My 5s is MUCH slower with the new software. I do have a suspicion that Apple has engineered it that way to make the new phone more appealing.

I found USB tethering bug was fixed by reinstalling iTunes, per this thread:

Re: IOS9 USB tethering to MacBook Air

Thanks for the post.

I have not tried to reinstalled the iTunes as I already have the problem fixed. I am not sure what fixed it (switch on/off, reboot, restore, reset networks settings, reset cellular settings or change the name of the device)...

My main system is Linux and the USB personal hotspot works fine as well as the WiFi/Bluetooth.

iOS 9.0.2 has just been installed and my problems are now gone... Apple I am disappointed, please take this more serious and do not fix the problems so fast. Please, keep in mind that I cannot live without problems in a perfect, utopia world, with an operation system that works smooth and fast... I was almost on the queue for the new iPhone (but not the pink one) and now I am still happy with my old, 4 year old iPhone 4S.

Thank you Apple.

P.S. Apple, I am still waiting for the special Apple fan promotion/discount code, so I can be motivated to buy the new iPhone.

iOS 9.0.2 on iPhone 6 plus, and still not working.
I have changed the name of the iPhone (nonsense and useless), reboot...
