I had big issues with AirDrop after El Capitan was installed on my 5K iMac. It didn't pick up any of my iOS devices, but worked pretty well when Yosemite was running. I researched a lot of potential fixes and nothing worked. I knew it wasn't my iOS devices as I could AD from iOS to iOS and I could also share files between my iPhone and iMac at work, which would detect my iPhone instantly.
After exhausting all possible solutions, including signing in and out of iCloud on the iMac, I checked my hotspot feature to make sure it was off. I toggled it back On and then Off again. I then clicked the AirPort icon in the menu bar and while I'm not saying this is the fix, that worked for me. Go figure. It seems to work when I want it now.

The problem has something to do with wifi networks.

Using my devices at my house AirDrop works 100% of the time. All the videos I upload to YouTube are taken on my iPhone then Airdrop to my iMac. Which is ironic because those videos are illustrating problems with iOS and OS X.

However moving all my devices to my girlfriends house (so less AirPort Extreme) and it DOESN'T work 100% of the time. I can not get it to send a simple picture.

We should list routers used to see if there is any correlation. Like I said with my Airport Extreme I get reliable use, but with my gfs Moto SGB6580 it won't work.

I wouldnt have thought this would matter because of how AirDrop works but this is the only factor in my problems with it.

I've used 4 different routers in different configurations and hand off continuity has never worked. It never worked when I had a 2013 mbp and an iPhone 5 either

I think it is an issue with iOS.

The only way I can get it to work is if I tether internet over Bluetooth.

I'm not sure its even hit and miss anymore, since i upgrade to el capitan and iOS 9, i haven't been able to use Airdrop between os x and iOS 9 at all. It was very hit and miss in yosemite, but now nothing.

Could someone confirm if they have ever got it working with latest software(mac to iPhone), i'm wondering if it was disabled due to the security issue that was found
I have 2x rMBP (2012 & 2014), 1x MBA (2014), 2x iPhone 6 & 1x iPhone 6s in this house! Yosemite was hit and miss! I was hoping iOS9 & El Cap would fix the randomness of Airdrop, but it seems worse than ever instead. Since iOS9 & El Cap I've only been able to see 1x iPhone 6. Nothing else shows up, no matter what I try.

Hand-off\Continuity works as it should, so I'm sure my network's okay. Apple needs to sort their s**t out with Airdrop or remove it.

"it just works!" my a***

Yosemite has been hit and miss with an iOS 8 iPad Mini 2, now the iPad runs iOS 9 and with El Cap I get a nice round 0% success rate. I mean, ZERO. Nothing. The exact opposite of "it just works".

This may be a dumb question, for those of you that can't get it to work - Are you not seeing the device name that you're trying to transfer to? Like from the Mac, you'll see your phone's name on the OS X dialog box. Or do you see the device name, but nothing is transferring? Because you actually have to tap the contact name for it to transfer..

I'm not seeing any device\contact to select.

I ...and I think I speak for most that say it's stopped working... have used it previously! so I know how it's supposed to work, it just doesn't.

My mac shows up on my iPhone and my iPhone shows up on my Mac when I am pairing. The correct number appears then the two devices "think" for a few seconds and then it says "device is incompatible."

AirDrop works fine with other devices. Internet tethering works over Bluetooth.

I've tried all combinations of mbp 2013, 2015 as well as an iPhone 5 and 6. Clean installs and different routers/networks.

Handoff just doesn't work

Sorted... :)

I found the problem on mine is that Bluetooth Sharing in System Preferences wasn't enabled after updating to El Cap. Enabled it, and now it works as soon as I wake my iDevice.

It's a random event, as it was auto-enabled on the Macbook Air, but not the 2 Macbook Pro's.

Could not get Airdrop to work correctly on Yosemite or El Capitan, but now that I've downloaded the latest El Cap update, it seems OK!
