iOS public beta 9.1 on new 6s plus?

Here's my story. Unfortunately I did not backup my phone to my Mac before installing public beta 9 and the iCloud backup that I DID make has disappeared (will never make that mistake again). For a while I was unable to backup my phone at all (not even to my Mac).

I updated to public beta 9.1, backed up my phone to my Mac and to the cloud, and reserved my rose gold 64g iPhone 6s Plus.

Now I'm trying to decide what to do about my new phone. I think I have three options:

1. Set up the new phone from scratch (my least favorite option) which would be a huge pain.
2. Restore my backup which would include public beta 9.1.
3. Somehow downgrade without losing my data after 9.0 release on Wednesday, re-backup before my new phone arrives and then restoring the backup with final 9.0.

Advice?

When you get the new phone. Install the public beta profile and install 9.1. Then restore your backup to get all your apps and data onto it.

Probably works the other way around too by restoring from your backup first and then installing the beta profile and install 9.1. (Your backup won't put 9.1 on it)

I believe when the iPod touches came out you couldn't get the beta right away. Not even for developers. I don't know if this will be the case this time around but don't count on first day 9.1 on your 6s.

That's true. It was only about a week though because when the new iPod Touch came out, it was in between two beta builds. I suspect though that the next 9.1 build will have 6s and 6s+ support as they would be out the same week if 9.1 builds continue the "usual" two week gaps.

So when I restore my backup it will be exactly as it is now except it'll be back to 9.0? That would be perfect. I'd rather not play with a beta on a brand new phone anyway (the only reason I downloaded 9.1 was because I couldn't backup my phone on the 9.0 beta).

The new phones add new features and it seems like 9.0 built onto the phone would be the way to go but its not for me. When I get my 6S+ on the 25th, I'm loading the beta profile and updating to 9.1 then doing the restore. New phone or not I like to use the updates unless they are terrible for the device and 9.1 has proven to be very good. 9.1 was released post announcement so we should assume its already built to support the new phones and features. If not it will most likely see an update prior to the release of the phones on the 25th.

No. You will need to update your device to 9.1 then do your restore.

It will accept the backup and update your phone or it will give you an error telling you the OS is older than the backup. Once you try to restore it will either work or not. If not, update your phone and try the restore again.

I'm fairly sure we'll be seeing a 9.1 release on the 25th as it (amongst other stuff) enables Live Photos which is one of the most advertised features of the iPhone 6S (This was probably pulled from iOS9.0 not to spoil the live photos announcement).

But commenting on the approach to take when you receive the new iPhone, what I normally do is set it up from scratch to make sure there's no problems with the backup from my old phone. But that's just me being OCD, most people are fine using the backup from their old phones.

That is an option and probably a good one but I myself have been restoring from backup since the original iPhone (8 years now, wow) but do it each year and still trucking.

I think I was forced to do it last year (don't remember why) and it was a GIANT pain in the neck. Having said that, I did feel like I ended up with a nice clean version. I just want to know what my options are leading up to next Friday. I dont want to restore my backup thinking all will be well and then my new phone gets bricked.

I setup my phone from scratch every so often and if you describe it to be such a pain in the ass maybe you should have more stuff on the cloud so that new setups don't require that much work.

I have everything in the cloud I can store there (at least I think I do). The pain is re-installing each app (many) one by one and redoing all of my settings on the phone and in each app.

Live Photos would be part of 9.0 so 9.1 wouldn't be needed for that

I think Live Photos is already in 9.0 without the Developer API's. Those are only coming in 9.1 and I doubt we'll see 9.1 before November when the new iPad Pro will be available.

Good shout guys, I think when I read the changelog it mentioned the API only not the actual functionality.

My money is on 9.1 available as of 25th or around that date and a 9.2 out for iPad Pro whenever that happens.

The beta just came out for it, it wouldn't launch that quickly (and it's the release for iPad Pro). Perhaps 9.0.1, but not 9.1.

I have read in several places that changing the version number on the backup plist file will allow you to install a backup from a future version to an old version. This could potentially cause problems (I wouldn't try doing an 9.0 backup on an 8.4 device, for instance), but I think it would probably be fine from 9.1 to 9.0.

Whenever I get a new iphone I set it up as NEW. Backups sometime backup up garbage so I like starting fresh.
