Whenever I get a new iphone I set it up as NEW. Backups sometime backup up garbage so I like starting fresh.

I'm starting to agree with you. Since the 2nd iphone Ive updated each year and only once I didnt use the previous backup. This year, however, I'm really concerned after losing my pre-beta backup so I think I'm going to start fresh.

I'm often tempted to do that, but just seems like a good amount of hassle. I can handle resetting of settings to some degree--even though setting up notifications and location access for each app I use becomes tiresome after a while even with that--but if I'd need to select to re-download things again, and then reconnect all my accounts, and not have my already existing messages and photos (not as important, but still of some importance) and all that, it just seems a bit too much for potentially not as much of a return after all that hassle.

Speaking of backups, I would look into availing yourself to another kind of local backup, just in case iTunes gives you problems. A lot of the local backup programs can backup things that iTunes doesn't, not to mention it is easy to extrapolate certain files and the like from many programs, unlike iTunes.

One of the programs I use is iMazing. I have been very pleased with it and the developers are quick to respond to questions.

Wow, I forgot about my messages. I guess it's not a HUGE deal but I'd definitely prefer to have them.

Losing photos would be a deal breaker (I have like 12,000) but since those sync with iCloud separately I'll be ok.

Messages I could lose, I already have my settings to delete when they reach 30 days old. Health data though, I have worked hard to collect my activity and vitals and don't want to start over.

Absolutely didnt think of that either! :(
I have read about but never used an application that can take a backup and pull out parts for restoration. Health data must be encrypted to be included in the backup so it would not work for that but I've read you can start from scratch, load your device, set your settings then use one of these apps (don't know the names) and pick out parts you want like messages and just restore those. In my view its too much trouble. If I were really having an awful time with my current software I would just go ahead with a new setup. I'm not at the moment. I have a few issues sure but I think its hardware and will know for sure after the 25th. I hope its hardware because if its not, I will be typing sad faces on here too.

Are you saying 3D touch will be pretty much useless on 3rd party apps until November?! ?!?! waaat
I'm not sure you understand very well how the API's work. 3DTouch will most likely take even longer to have any real place in 3rd part apps because developers are going to have to update their apps for it. It doesn't just happen overnight.

THIS is why I will be restoring from iTunes or iCloud. Maybe I'll do a backup on both just to be safe. PSA: Make sure you do an encrypted backup in iTunes so that your Health.app data backs up as well.
EDIT: Never mind, @gsmornot you already mentioned that in the next post.
