Best bet would be to rely on cross platform apps exclusively so you can freely switch between iOS and android. I am currently in the process of doing this. I plan on getting a nexus but will continue to use my other Apple product.

That is what I did before getting my first Android phone, a Nexus 4, back in November. By the time I got the Nexus 4 I had all my contacts, calendar, and music available on it within minutes of turning it on for the first time--simply by signing in with my google account.

Never again getting locked into single-platform solutions such as iCloud.

How did you get your music, podcast and ebooks to your nexus? None of my music or ebooks are from itunes but I have been using itunes to manage it since the dawn of time.

Music and podcasts can both go through Google Music. Not sure about eBooks. I am wondering that myself.

I use iSyncr

Works for all media as long as it is DRM free

I have been moving away from iTunes since 11, but I have used it to transfer Music, TV, Films, Books, Podcasts and iSyncr copies these to my Nexus without issue

Out of interest I just tried, by pointing the music manager (Preferences) to a book file that I had in iTunes, just came up as "no songs" so wouldn't upload. :)

Does this also keep a local copy in itunes? I'd like a copy there to sync with my other apple devices.

it does

I have a playlist in itunes called portable devices (this is a folder)
under this I have a few smart playlists, un watched media (tv/movies) and also one for recently added music (limited to 10GB) and also a new podcasts one

I also have one for manual stuff (random things I might want to sync, docs or other music for example)

My iPod and my Android devices both sync to this 'portable devices' playlist automatically each day so I have the same data on both

As iSyncr handles playcounts, this playlists auto update when things have been watched/listened to

In my case I use Google Music for my iTunes music. If I was not using Google Music I would be using iSyncr. It will sync podcasts and video from iTunes as well (as well as art, playlists, etc.). It also will sync back playlists created on the device back to itunes. If you download/buy an MP3 track on the device it can be synced back to iTunes as well.

For eBooks, you have the standard Kindle, Nook, etc. apps to use--and plenty of others. I use calibre on my mac for ebook management and conversion. I use Nook because I also have a Nook ebook reader.

Ya I'm pretty sure the Google Music Manager needs audio files ;)

But that's not what you said previously, you said you weren't sure, you were wondering. Perhaps I was trying to help?

Out of interest

Yes, It was as I had suspected, I was just interested to see if I could. When I attach my iPod Classic to my car, the Audiobooks are listed as albums in the car menu, so rather than reading it as a common file, it just reads it as a music file, I was just seeing if similar was true for e books, did no harm to try. But thanks anyway for your response ;)
