Do you guys think that there will eventually just be one operating system or will they live together? Or will one die like beta max or hd DVD?

I would struggle to understand how you could draw a correlation. Nobody wants to have 2 types of players, and nobody needs to have 2 phones.

If anything it will be like OSX and Windows. The comparison would be that Android would have the most marketshare (like Windows) and iOS would be what OSX is like today.

The difference is iOS has reached a popularity that OSX has never achieved. What Apple has to deal with is the countless handsets running Android software. Apple has three products iPhone/iPad/iPod Touch

I don't think he meant one person having two devices. From what I understand he is asking if there will be only one operating system one day (like Blu-Ray killing off HD DVD).

I, for one, don't see it happening. There's always going to be competition. Android or iOS may one day become irrelevant and die off but there will always be something to take its place.

Yeah that's what I mean will one of the os overtake the other one. I think that android is going to keep getting bigger and bigger, and there was awhile where Mac was pretty much non existent, I think that could happen with one of the os.

Agreed... because VHS had to battle against DVD as well. So even if iOS "wins" it will still have to fight something else.

Me, personal, I would like it to be Windows (Phone) 8 vs iOS instead of Android... I can't stand Android.

I'm with you on that. I loved WP7 when I tried out the Lumia.

I don't see one winning and the other disappearing. After all is said and done they actually do "work together" - you can call, text, etc from an IOS phone to an Android and back. In the VHS vs. Beta world etc. manufactures had to decide which type to produce or to do both as would equipment manufacturers. Here is it Apple vs. the rest of the world. I don't see Apple giving up nor should they even if they don't have the majority of phones. They have never given up on the Mac even when they didn't sell a lot of those.

Now some of those patent disputes can change things maybe making Android more expensive or the other way around.

I know what he meant, but the reason that reason that one Video standard wins is because people don't want to buy both and studios pick one.

The only way it would be like the Movie industry is if developers only developed for one or the other, then eventually the one with the most developers would win out.

Like others have said I think it's more like Win vs Mac or PS3 vs Nintendo type of thing. It would be like saying "Do you think one day all computers will have the same OS?" On the personal consumer side I'd love for everything to be standard like that, but would also miss the option of choice and competition. I like that I can have an Xbox and/or a PS3, a MBP or a Dell, a Ford or a Jeep. What would be AWESOME is if they could standardize some things syncing (iCloud, iMessage, BBM, backups, Apps, etc) so that no matter which brand or OS you use it could basically be seamless integrated into your ecosystem, but HIGHLY unlikely that would ever happen. Though that would be like asking PS3 to allow Xbox games to be played in their system and the other way around as well.

Nice to dream about but the reality is that Android doesn't have that much growth left.

Microsoft has the most ground to cover and soon RIM's carcass will be carted off the field.

I doubt it will ever be a one OS field. The tides seem to be turning, and the popularity of the iPhone lowering a bit (at least in the younger crowd) so iOS may be OS X with Android as Windows, if you will.

Having only android in the market is not going to be good.

Having only iOS in the market is not going to be good.

"Insert another OS here" in the market........you get it.

There are things about android i like and there are things about android i hate. Similar for iOS as well. None of them completely satisfied me. Any of them dying is not in a consumer's best interest.

Samsung is in court getting their ish pushed in by Apple over patents.

Android itself is getting sued for IP infringement by a group of companies worth over a Trillion dollars (Trillion Dollar Club)

Remember that two years ago WebOS was going to be the next thing. Where are they today?

Android likely isn't going to make it. Samsung is one of the few companies making money and that's because they've got a nice vertical biz in Displays, Memory and Fab. They can make the same money licensing Windows 8 mobile and be free from Android IP lawsuits.

File it for claim chowder but in 2 years the decline will on its way. Verizon and AT&T will be giving Windows the good ole Bravo Juliet in their stores and the market will move away from Android.

Consumer won't care because every Android user I talk to only downloads free apps. They have no financial skin in the game.

Android is not EVER going to have the impact of Windows in this market. They don't have the IP or cohesiveness (too many skins, ROMS, Mods etc)

If you still believe Android can do it. May I suggest some drug rehab or mental health counseling for you.

really it all boils down to what's needed for your daily function. each user has specific needs and at the end of the day I wouldn't compare it to DVD vs VHS. People will always have their preference based on their lifestyle.

I don't think there will be one mobile OS that dominates, but I think in the end we'll see the two main players end up being Apple and Microsoft once again. Unless Google pulls Android back as an open source platform I think eventually the brand is going to be splintered so severely that the versions of Android based OSs released by Samsung, HTC, LG, etc are all going to look very different from the stock OS that I'm assuming will eventually be used by Motorola in the Nexus line. This will lead to a diminished brand for Android and eventually it ends up being about about as popular as Linux in the desktop OS world. The fact that Android doesn't have a desktop layer to its ecosystem to help suck users deep into Google world will help push this along.

There is an ignore list.

Problem is I'm correct on this whether or not you like to hear it or not.

Google simply does not have the patent portfolio and infrastructure to manage the platform as compared to Microsoft and Windows. It just isn't going to happen.

Florian Mueller points out succinctly that the Trillion Dollar Club shows us how large the companies are that are currently embroiled in patent disputes with Android. These are tiny little patent trolls.

Microsoft "will" regain their feet and claw back marketshare and both Apple and Android needs to understand this. This may be Balmer's last stand.

People are giving Android WAY too much credit.

15 years ago I read how Linux and Open Source was going to take
over and then everyone realized how cluttered and unfocused the Linux
market was and it settled in beneath the proprietary systems.

I don't see Android as being any different. Why exactly should anyone think Android has staying power? The lack of a desktop platform is going to prevent them from matching MSFT and AAPL.
