Samsung shares drop $12 billion after Apple's court victory

You guys are looking at this on a really superficial level. It is not about the products that are banned being two year old or obsolete, it is a tad bit more profound than that.

LOL. Quoting a one day stock price (or even a 6 month long snapshot) on a company like this is asinine. Apple lost nearly 20% of their stock price between 3 and 5 months ago. Should we ponder on that, or look at the company as a whole? People try to short stocks to gain some quick cash on news like this. Happens all the time.

Sure their shares went down Friday and maybe today. They will bounce back when appeals go on and they release their newest Nexus phones which will be soon.

I doubt Samsung or it's share holders had such a casual reaction to the drop.

OK, if you say so. Im sure they care but it isnt like the GS3 is getting banned. Its a two year old GS4G that 1 carrier sells here in the USA. And nothing is banne yet either. Apple beat Samsung, not Google and Android.

I know your hoping it to be so, but it isnt.

Hoping? Nah..of course Apple beat Samsung, it was not a trial against Google. But Samsung being the market leading Android OEM and a very important player in the Android space, their defeat has an impact on Android. It doesn't means that Android is finished or anything, but this case can end up having a negative ripple effect that extends to the other Android OEMs who may end up being "afraid" of suffering a similar fate as Samsung.

And I am not a happy camper when it comes to the iPhone, I am going to switch to Android soon, just waiting to see if there is any info on the new Nexus to see if I get it or the SIII. I am not "hoping" for Android to be finished, I in fact love Google and want them to succeed even more in the mobile space.

Probably not but their stock falling isnt going to kill them. It didnt kill Apple. They will bounce back. Did Googles stock go down? You said it will affect Android.

BTW..When the patents get passed soon Google will sue Apple for its notification copy.

I understand that it was not the stock Android OS that was charged of infringing the patents, but considering that it was Android devices that were found to infringe and it is an Android OEM that was found guilty and could end up with it's Android devices being banned, how was Apple's win not a blow to Android?

One would need to first inquire what those fees Microsoft is paying for cover. It doesn't means the whole OS but just some specific features that they licensed from Apple.

This should answer your question.

What will happen after the appeal, is Apple will send Google a letter, citing the specific items in the ruling that Google violated, and offer licensing fees.

Google will agree, since the legal precedent will have been set.

I think your right there. Following on from that I think its possible that OEM's will then start offering more devices with totally-stock or nearly-stock Android. If Google can get Android free of any Apple patent infringements, stock Android will then be a much more attractive proposition for the OEM's as it will greatly reduce the chances of legal action against a particular OEM Android implementation.

If this does prove to be the case, its possible that this lawsuit will actually help Android to create a more consistent user experience across devices.

Of course, at the moment OEM's use their own GUI implementations (Touchwiz, Sense, etc) to differentiate themselves from their Android rivals so if they do start using stock Android in more devices, its the hardware and additional services that they'll need to concentrate on to differentiate themselves.

But did Android not copy the iOS lock screen I'm sure they had to change it?

It's certainly going to be interesting to see how phones will change. Of course, Google aren't simply going to give-up and, who knows, maybe they'll now be forced to find solutions to all these disputed patents which may be better than Apple's offerings.

And after all, immitation is the sincerest form of flattery.

Well the impact on Google's shares was short lived....

How many smartphone makers are making money from Android phones? Samsung and HTC do, but does anyone else?

I think that’s a bigger reason for phonemakers to consider alternatives to Android.

Actually Android should get even better now...now that Samsung has learned the hard way to rip off the works of other.

Maybe they can innovate.

If the patents are valid and the sentence stays like today

Mmm, I don't think so
