iPhone IOS13 CarPlay. Nice, if you use Apple Maps.

Was able to test CarPlay for a trip this afternoon & I appreciate how the maps, music & another quarter of the screen can be used by as many as 3 Apps. Usually, it’s the Maps ‘next turn’ details on the top left, the Music player on the bottom left & Apple Maps on the right of screen (may be reversed for left hand drive vehicles), but Calendar was also taking up space at one stage.

Once you get used to the split screens, it’s a pretty intuitive interface that results in less App switching behind the wheel, which is better for all of us.

But, the thing is, I use Google Maps, so I won’t utilise the split screen mode often. Hopefully, either Google update their App to allow media controls, or Apple allow Google Maps to be used in split screen in future.

I like the new UI quite a bit, plus a "regular" implementation of album art now (while retaining the previous faded background flavor). Looks like there's a few new options in settings (display modes, etc.), and the phone is now available without disrupting the CP display (though obv. the idea is to not be fiddling with your phone ...)

I only spent about 5 minutes sitting in the garage, I'll have to check it out more thoroughly later, plus on the other ride (Sync 3 vs. uConnect)

I also use Google maps simply because I prefer the satellite view. Hope to have the split view in a future update as well.

Exactly. Apple could have made the split percentage dynamic based on screen width. But they didn't. 50/50 for everyone. And if you have a luxury car with a wide screen, it looks awful.

I'm a Google Maps guy anyway, so I really don't care as this only uses Apple Maps which I don't like. But still.

I don't think so...by simply being a widescreen, it IS bigger while maintaining the required ratio to the other windows. See below...Map is skinnier than his while still maintaining the 50/50 ratio...his Map is indeed wider.

Seriously? Do you realize how many different screen sizes there are out there for every car company CarPlay is available? Then you'd have a whole group of people complaining that they can't see enough of the music screen or read their calendar info.

Google Maps just got Siri integration in an update yesterday so hopefully we'll see another update for Google Maps to support split screen.

It means exactly that. Strange if it's worked for you prior. It never has for me until now using CarPlay.

I have been oblivious to some IOS13 updates so when I plugged in my phone yesterday after the update it did throw me for a second but I'm a fan. The split screen reminds me of the set-up my husband has in his Toyota where you can see your maps AND your music with their interface.

Looks like a copy of Ford's system. Just ok. Until Waze and Google are part of it, does not really mean much to me. What is the point of the Home on the top right hand side? Seems like a waste of space.

The best thing about the new update, if you click on your phone now, it does not take away what was on Carplay.

Not sure why Apple can't implement contact photos in phone calls and messages like other applications do too. That seems like an easy no brainer add.

When you are NOT at home and you start the car, it shows that for you to press if you want to go home. Then look at the other pic (in my post)...upper right is used for turn by turn. Maybe educate yourself on the minimal basic info that has been posted about this for three months now before making that kind of statement??

I still use Google Maps with iOS 13 / Carplay. I don't need the widgets to change music, I perform that using my steering wheel.

I'd rather have the Nav on full screen display anyway. I also really, really like the fact that I can have YouTube TV (outputting audio in the background) and Google Maps still stays active with Carplay. Huge improvement in the new Carplay (previously opening any other app on the phone would cause Carplay to lose 'focus').

Thanks - I have just think it is a waste of space. Like I said, I use Waze and Google Maps. Don't use Apple Maps. FYI - been on beta, so now how it works, but thanks for trying to unsuccessfully convince or educate me. Also - definitely was not a comment that deserved rude feedback. Agree - that is a huge improvement.

You can’t set navigation in dashboard mode. The “suggested” destination in the upper right is just that. You still need to go into full map screen to set destination if you don’t want to go where it suggests (or use Siri).

Exactly right. The big wins for me are:

1. You can finally “Press 1 to speak to an agent, Press 2 to dial by name...” and get the keypad to work when you are driving at speed.

2. You can finally ask Siri to “Call Panera Bread...” and tap a button on the screen to call the phone number not just get the address.

3. You can say “Play WFAN New York radio” or any of a thousand local radio stations and have it live stream instead of having to use the car radio for that purpose.

4. You can say “Take me to 123 Main Street using Google Maps“ and have Google Maps load the address instead of only having that voice functionality for Apple Maps.

The split screen thing is actually annoying not only because it looks ugly but because it adds an additional button press to what used to be the home button; now you have to tap it twice to get to the rows of icons if you don’t use the split screen.

For example, I run Google Maps because it shows those little pop-ups and how many minutes different roads can save you and then I run Waze in the background for police notifications. Now in Google Maps to get to Waze I have to tap that button twice instead of once.

I don't own a car, so when I need one I rent one from a spot about a block away. I've been in about 8 different cars this summer with different screen sizes, different native OS, etc. and I would still vastly prefer CarPlay to any of those. Even with this implementation. Apple could tweak some of the design but I think it's on a whole other level - even compared to some luxury cars that feature maps in their interface dashboards.

I submitted feedback to Apple again to let us use Carplay from iPhones and iPads. Unifying apps with the car's features is great, but it's still not a viable option for a large number of vehicles (older cars, motorcycles...)

What are you asking for?? For the iPhone or iPad to become the CarPlay display?? That will never happen. Outside of the main menu interface, every phone and iPad has all of the CarPlay capabilities anyway. I use my iPhone on my bike and listen to music as well as use Maps at the same time. Maybe I'm confused as to what you are asking. And what older car does NOT have the ability to have a CarPlay head unit installed? I know there are some that must utilize an unorthodox conversion (like mine), but I was still able to add CarPlay.
