What are you asking for?? For the iPhone or iPad to become the CarPlay display?? That will never happen. Outside of the main menu interface, every phone and iPad has all of the CarPlay capabilities anyway. I use my iPhone on my bike and listen to music as well as use Maps at the same time. Maybe I'm confused as to what you are asking. And what older car does NOT have the ability to have a CarPlay head unit installed? I know there are some that must utilize an unorthodox conversion (like mine), but I was still able to add CarPlay.

I don't see why using the iPhone as the Carplay display won't ever happen. It works well with jailbroken devices. Android Auto allows it.

My older car doesn't have a standard single/double DIN shape, so I can't fit an aftermarket Carplay head unit in there without some creative/expensive routes. If I use Google Maps, I don't see a way to control Amazon Music within that app. Sure, I can use the iPhone as usual on the bike, but I'm trying to reduce distraction, which is one of the main points of Carplay, to have an optimized dashboard. I use Siri now, but it has frustrating limitations.

When iPS 13 was announced they said that it would work with Waze and others... looks like Waze didn't upgrade yet for iOS 13 support?

Waze works very well in iOS13. But it won't show up in that split-screen view, perhaps that's confusing you. See that button in the lower left corner that looks like two rows of dots? Tap that, then swipe to Waze, then launch Waze. Has to be full-screen to work. Won't work in that first split-screen page.

Damn...what car?

2012 Audi S5. It has that MMI form factor that hides the head unit somewhere, some media slots below the air vents, the controls are near the gear shift, and embeds the display separately in a hood.

Finding this picture, I actually just came across some Aliexpress Carplay head units that claim, in broken English, to fit . Interesting, but janky. Still, it would be a lot easier if I could just use my phone.

Well, well, well....installed this 2 weeks ago.

It was NOT fun...but I did it more for Apple Music as I finally switched over to that.

I don't understand why you need your iPhone to emulate CarPlay when your iPhone can do everything that CarPlay can do.

Run Google Maps to navigate. As Siri to play an Apple Music playlist. Messages, Phone Calls, it's actually a superior experience because it isn't encumbered by a UI that can be cumbersome and vexing.

Holy hell, lol. You know my pain, then! That's impressively invasive. You have my attention, and now I might need to do that project. Can you share the parts you used? Did you manage to integrate it into a B&O system, and the backup camera? So far, all I've done is rewired the Apple 30-pin adapter cable to trick it into thinking a little Bluetooth AD2P streaming device is legit so I can stream music as a media input.

I used Carplay in a rental Q5, liking it, and didn't find it cumbersome and vexing. I admit, I may want it in part because I don't want Apple telling me what to do in this case, since it would be so trivial for them to turn it on. I guess I'll just move on with my life and use my phone as normal in a mount on my bike.

Touch your phone what so ever in some cities around me and you’re looking at $100 fine the first time and $200 each additional time.

I THINK yours is easier because it is 3G MMI. I actually had to remove the stock screen and apply a touch screen module on top of it that works with CarPlay while keeping all the stock MMI functions. I think the 3G can use the MMI knob to select.

Splicing the video interface box into the MMI cabling was easier than expected...one wire. But fitting that and the Android box that actually runs the CarPlay back into the dash was a nightmare.

I gave up trying to find the back up camera wire up front, but I still have access...just can’t be in CarPlay mode. I just press one of the other MMI buttons when I need it.

Double clicking the stock NAV button activated the CarPlay. Separate mic for Siri (which I hated, so I ripped it out)

I set my iPhone to answer in Bluetooth mode as standard so it accesses the Audi mic/speakers.

I have the B&O system. The modules come with the interface cable for the stock Audi iPod connector in the glove box, so the sound is perfect.

Here’s where I got mine. Nice because it is in Australia and could WhatsApp the guy with questions.

When you are NOT at home and you start the car, it shows that for you to press if you want to go home. Then look at the other pic (in my post)...upper right is used for turn by turn. Maybe educate yourself on the minimal basic info that has been posted about this for three months now before making that kind of statement??

Cmon man. No need for that attitude.

Yes, when in navigation mode, the turn by turn replaces the “Home/Work” shortcut buttons.

People aren’t always Navigating & just want the map on there.
So what if you DON’T want to go home and DON’T need turn-by-turn directions? THEN it seems like a waste of space. Is there a way to get rid of it or display something else?

Pretty sure I had the Calendar displayed there at one stage.

Nice that when someone calls you now, their pic shows up on Carplay. It did not do that in the beta mode with my X, but on my new 11 Pro it does.
