Has anyone noticed a decrease in battery life since going to iOS5?

I know there's a long thread in the iPhone forum regarding battery life for the 4s, but this is more of a general query related any iPhone that is running iOS5.

Last night, I went to bed with my iPhone set to wake me up at 4:00am. I woke up on my own, but I noticed my phone shut down because of the battery was fully drained. It was probably near 80% when I turned in. This never happened before but I had just upgraded to iOS5.

Yep, it's normal If you leave iTunes open and the iPhone/iPad in the same network, the iPhone WiFi card will not go to sleep when the iPhone is in "sleep" (because is hold "on" by iTunes WiFi sync) and this drain the battery ;)

I wonder if that was the cause. I'll turn off wifi before turning in myself. I usually do, but I think on occasion I just leave it enabled. It wasn't a huge issue back in iOS4 but perhaps it is now.

I have a lot of the nonsense notifications turned off so basically I unplugged from power at about noon yesterday and today I have 39% battery power. That was with a day of use and a couple of phone calls. It's better compared to my last phone (I skipped the iPhone 4 and went right to the 4s).

I can say that for the first time ever since an upgrade, my battery life seems to have actually increased. I have everything running that I ever did, and I can go a solid day, from say 6am till 9 or 10pm, and still have 50% battery left. Generally, I'd be down to 10% or less by then.

You can check your logs, when the "Wifi sync" is on, you should see these -infinite- logs:

Code:
17/10/11 02:36:10,691 com.apple.usbmuxd: _SendAttachNotification (thread 0x7fff73842960): sending attach for device 14:8f:c6:0f:9e:ec@fe80::168f:c6ff:fe0f:9eec._apple-mobdev._tcp.local.: _GetAddrInfoReplyReceivedCallback matched.
17/10/11 02:36:10,900 usbmuxd: _AMDeviceConnectByAddressAndPort (thread 0x100797000): IPv4

(where the 14:8f:c6:0f:9e:ec is the iPhone/iPad MAC Address)

and If your turn wifi off in the iPhone, OS X send a funny log:

Code:
17/10/11 02:36:41,104 com.apple.usbmuxd: _handle_timer [B][COLOR="Red"]Fish out of water!!![/COLOR][/B]
17/10/11 02:36:48,060 com.apple.usbmuxd: _SendDetachNotification (thread 0x7fff73842960): sending detach for device 14:8f:c6:0f:9e:ec@fe80::168f:c6ff:fe0f:9eec._apple-mobdev._tcp.local.: _BrowseReplyReceivedCallback got bonjour removal.
17/10/11 02:36:48,060 com.apple.usbmuxd: networkDeviceCallback Surprisingly, there is no mie matching name

Fish out of water!!! > that means "iPhone/iPad out of WiFi network" :D Funny developer in the team...? :D

You're not alone. I've noticed quite a decrease in the battery life of my iPhone 4 since upgrading. For example, I charged my phone over night in within two hours of taking it off the charger it has gone from 100% to 87% where as before it would be between 98 - 100% right now. This is with no use at all, just sitting in my pocket. I'm not sure what's going on, maybe I need to turn some of the notifications off. Either way, I hope it's something that can be fixed in the next firmware update. However, with my iPad 2 there's been absolutely no change. In fact, I think the battery life is slightly better. Wierd.

That's not the case with my iPhone 4.

I left iTunes open last night with my phone unplugged on my nightstand with wifi and wifi sync enabled.

It's currently showing 1.0 days standby, 2 hrs 23 mins, usage and 57% charge remaining. Maybe a little more usage than under iOS 4.3.5, but not by much.

Very Disappointed

I've had similar problems with the battery not holding a charge. Got my phone on Friday and had it sync'd up and running. Friday night when I went to bed, I had 78% on the battery. Got up at 6:30 Saturday morning and the phone was dead. Coincidentally, I was at the Apple store Sunday morning to pick up a new Nano and said something to the guy in the store about the battery and got the usual - is the Bluetooth on? is Wi-Fi on? - Was the screen turned off?

Well of course both the Bluetooth and Wi-Fi was on. What good is the phone if I keep having to turn them on and off every single time I need them? And no, my screen turns off after 5 min so the screen wasn't sucking the life out of the battery. And no, all the apps were turned off and NOTHING was running in the background.

This morning when I woke up, the phone was plugged in all night and was 100%. I swear, not 15 minutes later, the battery was at 91%. When I got to work, the battery was at 82% and I'm betting it's going to be damn near dead when I get off of work 9 hours later.

What really irritates me is I traded in a 3GS for the 4GS and the battery on that phone was awesome - even after over two years of use. I hope Apple fixes this problem and doesn't try to duck it like they did with the crappy antenna on the 4G when it first came out.

If you can see the iPhone (not USB connected) in the devices list from iTunes, then the WiFi car in the iPhone is "on", also if the iPhone is in sleep (aka: display off), if you close iTunes the wifi card in the iPhone will go to sleep with the iPhone after about 1 minutes iPhone sleep.

Infact if you leave the iphone in sleep with itunes close, when you press the home button, immediatly after the display turn on, you can see a very short interval time after the wifi icon appear in the top bar (like 0,5 or 1 second, depends on your wifi modem). BUT if the iTunes is open with the iPhone in the same network, if you press home button after 5-6-7...minutes of iPhone "sleep", when the display turn the wifi simbol/icon is already here, with no lag time, so the wifi car is not went to sleep! And this is the cause of the "battery drain" in the iOS 5!

...and the mac/osx logs confirm this "horrible" thing, i need itunes but I can't turn on-off iphone wifi every hour

Maybe also for this the "standy time" in the iPhone 4S is 100 hours less!!

wifi, locations and notifications on. brightness at less than half, push email. texting/iMessage, Internet, Facebook and games. A pretty heavy use from the weekend and got 6hrs 25mins of usage with 1day 6hrs of standby.

You may also want to try and drain the battery till the phone shuts off and then recharge to 100%. It helped my phone, but I was having battery inconsistence issue. Would say I had 50% then in about 5 minutes of non-use i had 35%

<irrelevent guff snipped>

Yes, I can see my iPhone in iTunes while it isn't connected and NO, I'm not seeing any battery drain. My standby time has decreased a little, that's all.

If you're seeing your battery draining, I'd suggest you look elsewhere for an explanation, because the behaviour you're describing seems to be perfectly normal and it's not draining mine.

<edit> Stats now at 3Hrs 5Mins usage, 1Day 5Hrs standby, 41% battery remaining.

<edit 2> I should point out that I'm not using iCloud yet. I'm still on mobileme.

My battery life sucks too. Here's what I've done so far:
1) Restored and set up as new phone
- getting all of my apps in the right spot was particularly fun
2) Ran the batt to 0, let it turn off, recharged to 100, closed all apps, turned off and on.
- no change
3) Removed facebook and a few other bs apps from the notifications
- no change

by no change, I mean:
at 87% after 42 mins "usage" (texting on iMessage while on wifi) and 59 standby.

So, I just turned off location services entirely to see what that does...

Have you already tried to turn off WiFi Sync in iTunes?

Also I hate these logs!! Is the mac that try to connect / check if the iPhone is in the same network! If the iPhone respond to the request then the wifi card remain "on", if the iPhone is "out of water/network" the wifi card (in the iPhone) will go to sleep (and no battery-drain).

IMO this "wifisync" is not a good thing like it should be!

I did turn off WiFi sync. Also, noticed that BT was on for some reason -- but before you say "AH-HA!" note that I'm at 72% an hour later after I turned it off -- Usage seems very high - 1:28 with standby 1:51 since my last report and I haven't done much.

Also, turned off iCloud backups...

I'm actually seeing better battery life, and no I am not am Apple apologist either... in fact quite the opposite, I had big problems with iOS4 when it first came out.

I'm at 50% right now and 3.5 hours usage which is pretty good for a 3GS, that'll be around 7 hours usage depending how heavy...

I do have push turned off though, no iCloud etc

I think mine improved, but I'm not sure if I'm imagining it. It certainly didn't get worse though, as I would have noticed any significant worsening of battery life.

So, performing the same actions on two iPhone 4 phones (one with iOS 5 and one with iOS 4) that are configured the same way and have the same applications running shows that the rate at which the battery gets used up on the phone with iOS 5 is roughly 1.5 - 2 times faster than that on the phone with iOS 4. And this isn't when just doing a quick test, but it's more or less continuously like that, based on a number of different comparisons over the past few days (if not a bit more).

It's actually noticeable when after a matter a few minutes (generally between 3 and 5) of using the iPhone 4 with iOS 5--simply doing basic things like checking for app updates, checking/reading email, browsing a few web sites, perhaps reading/sending a few text messages--goes down by 1%. It's actually fairly noticeable, whereas on the iPhone 4 with iOS 4 you don't really see the battery going down as often--you don't even really notice it under normal use, and it's not all that often even when you watch for it.

In terms of standby time, it seems like not much might have changed, at least not in a noticeable way (so far).
