2018 iPad 6th gen is on sale for $249 and would be a huge upgrade over the iPad 2, better speakers, much better screen etc. I would highly recommend that as the replacement for his usage and very affordable price for the iPads. By far apples best bang for the buck one they’ve made, and will be supported for quite awhile yet

Netflix still runs on the iPad 2. Yes, you need to run the older version. However, otherwise the iPad 2 is just painfully slow. While Netflix runs fine on it, don't try to surf on an iPad 2.

Does the hospital support free WiFi for Netflix? Some hospitals may specifically block Netflix, because it uses too much bandwidth. That said, you can download some (but not all) Netflix shows to the iPad.

In the US, Wal-Mart, Target, Costco, Best Buy others have the 32 GB 6th generation iPad (2018) for $249. If you don't have a lot of storage needs, 32 GB is fine. If the iPad is kept relatively free of junk, loading 5-10 Netflix shows will be OK.

I would not recommend the 5th generation (2017) model, because the pricing is not very good, especially for those older specifications.

BTW, although (the older version of) Netflix usually runs fine on the iPad 2, if you have a lot of stuff loaded it may crash, more so than the 2 GB models. So that fact, along with the fact that you can't do much else with the iPad 2, is good justification to upgrade to the 6th generation (2018) model iPad if you can swing the $250.

Just learned that my iPad 2 can no longer be used by Netflix because apple no longer supplies a upgrade. Normally, this might not bother me, however, today I learned that my husband will be needing chemotherapy 5 hours at a time. Where is the best place to buy a used iPad that can be used by NetFlix?

Buy a refurbished iPad 4. They usually cost around $100 if you look in the right place.

If the iPad 2 is doing the job after reinstalling the older version of Netflix, that’s great. The 9.7” iPad may be updated or refurb pricing lower by the time you need to upgrade.

If not, or you would like a Retina display, I’d opt for one of the newer models. The 9.7”, though it has been out for over a year now, if you can get it at $250 seems a better buy than the iPad 4 at $100. The iPad 4 is already stuck 2 iOS versions back on iOS 10 and with another update on the horizon, it will be in the position that the iPad 2 is now sooner rather than later.

Agreed. I wouldn't buy any 1 GB iPad in 2019. And I definitely wouldn't buy one with an A6X in it. Here are the relative Geekbench scores:

For the record, I own:

iPad 2: A5 - GB score 600 (I owned this until 2 months ago when I gave it away.)
iPad Air 2: A8X - GB score 4550
iPhone SE: A9 - GB score 4550
iPhone 7 Plus: A10 - GB score 6000
iPad Pro 10.5": A10X - GB score 9600

Given my experience with that range of devices, my recommended minimum is 2 GB RAM with a score of 4000 or better, which means iPad 5th generation (A9, 2 GB RAM) or else iPad Air 2 (A8X, 2 GB RAM). The iPad 4 (A6X, 1 GB RAM) has a score of just about 1/3rd of that, which means it would be quite slow for surfing. However, the best bang for the buck right now is the iPad 6th generation 32 GB (A10, 2 GB RAM), at just $250.

I definitely hope Apple keeps this budget iPad range around and updated in the future. I’ve contemplated going over to the pro but I really enjoy my 6th gen, very snappy and despite what some nit picky people say, I love the screen on it. My moms still loves her 5th gen as well.
