Quick update.

I ended up getting the 10.5 pro 256GB.

The slightly cheaper price at the moment and the extra storage were the biggest factors (shame they couldn't offer the 256GB size on the regular iPad....or maybe that's why they don't).

If I was still going for the 128GB size it would have been a tougher call, but the internal storage gave me no choice (I'm aware of the dongles but they have their own issues)

I think the cheaper iPad is fine, but once you use the better screen it’s hard to go back.

It's impossible to go back.

The cheap 2017 iPad is a regression back to the days of spongey displays, thicker, heavier devices with no truetone or quad speaker sound systems. Add in the lack of pencil support and you really are stepping back to the ice age.

Go iPad Pro or go home.

I had the choice between the two and 10.5 iPP and decided to get the 2017 iPad instead. It's more than capable and it runs iOS 11 with no problems at all. You save almost 50% and in a couple of years time you can trade it for the latest iPP which hopefully the next iPad Pro's will get the OLED screens.

The lack of True Tone is almost blinding when you put the 2017 iPad side-by-side with any of the iPads Pros. Bringing back the spongey iPad Air display is sickening to me. iPad Pro is what you should buy.

None of those are an issue for me especially at 50% off the price of an iPP and I compared the two side by side and I still went with the budget iPad. It's a nice tablet for the price.

Great choice. I went through a similar decision back in April and went refurb pro for not too much more. Honestly for me, there has been one factor that made all the difference. Don't need the processor, don't care that much about the screen or extra thinness, speakers don't seem to be that big a deal to me... all those things were "nice to haves" and will surely add to it's longevity. But hands down, the number one reason why I prefer the pro is the smart keyboard. This alone has enabled me to treat the iPad much more like a full computer.

I went with the 2017 iPad after trying both 9.7" and 10.5" Pros. The display is much less fingerprint/smudge prone than both the Pro's, and less yellow - the white balance is off on the Pros even with true tone disabled, and it can't be fixed in display accommodations in Hue without changing all the other colors too. Also, the screen is not spongy at all. I felt that way on the original Air but on this one I don't even notice it. My plan is to use this for the next year or so until the next gen OLED iPad comes out and then sell this bad boy.

I'm currently using an iPad Air (1) but I need to buy a replacement soon.

The main issue I'm having though is whether to get the iPad 9.7" 2017 model or the equivalent iPad Pro 9.7".

The iPad 9.7 (2017) 128GB would cost me £400 while the iPad Pro 9.7 128GB would cost me £512 and I'm wondering if it's worth the difference as I'm unable to test one out and I'm wondering what others who may have think of them.

I mainly use my iPad as non-gaming casual consumption device for web or other media.

I love my 2017 ipad, and had the same reservations when going forward with the purchase. I don't do anything incredibly crazy on it, and probably the most intensive use is with Zwift, and it works great for that. My biggest gripe is that no stores really sell cases specifically for it, so not much choice there.
