I work in a school district where K-5 students have 1:1 iPads. This will mess things up a bit. Not sure what we'll do for headphones. Bluetooth? I'm sure bluetooth ones would be far more expensive than regular headphone jack versions, plus would probably need a different kind of cord to charge (micro-USB wouldn't surprise me), and students will probably forget to charge them. Haven't seen USB-C headphones, but I haven't really looked, either.

USB EarPods are a thing. Incredibly flimsy cable, but they're there.

Speak for yourself. I don't want to spend $600 to stream stuff in the kitchen but I will pay $350.
No one wants to actually. For same purpose even old iPad will do.

I just mean they could have at least tried to make new cheap iPad instead of just saving few seconds during event to say “oh and btw new iPad is cheaper!”. New cheap iPad should at least have faster processor (A15 is already years behind) and adequate display with no air gap

Making this iPad cheaper wasn’t the answer Apple.

They should have either made a new one actually worthy of the price they were trying to charge for the current one, or made a genuinely cheap new iPad.

It was such poor value at launch almost all retailers started discounting them heavily. It’s still bad deal at the new price purely because of the older specs.

And it should start with 128GB. 64GB in 2024 is such a joke.

It's the end of an era; no more iPads with the home/Touch ID button. Once I need to replace my iPad 7G, I will likely go with a 10th-gen model with 256 GB, especially since I don't really use it for gaming or animation or artwork or anything like that.

bought a 10th gen iPad but not for myself. it's a surprise gift for my mum. it'll be a decent upgrade over her current 7th gen model. a bit more ram, slightly larger screen, faster processor, double the storage. it's her main device for when she's at home so I like to upgrade her every few years or so. I know this is a 2022 model but it won't matter. When I'm there to troubleshoot something I hate how slow the iPad is but she is still quite happy with it.

I probably could have waited another year but I was surprised that apple has quoted me £100 trade in for the 7th gen so it'll only cost £250 :) I don't mind that.

There is a USB-C to headphone jack adapter, that’s probably the best solution.

I considered buying it and the second I touched it in the store it felt…disgusting. Display is atrocious, the air gap gives a feeling that a display is plastic.
"Disgusting" is a bit dramatic, but yes, the non-laminated display does feel cheap and plastic-y.
I was really hoping for an A16 or A17 refresh with better battery life.
I know. They couldn't even bother with an A15. Cheap asses.

You'll buy USB-C headsets for $5 and save that much and more by not having to buy obsolete, proprietary Lightning cables.

my son 9th gen iPad hit the floor a little hard the other day- hopefully AppleCare will be able to give me an instant replace ... or will they upgrade it to the 10th gen?

I've been eyeing both the Mini and this for a while now. I don't need either, but it would be fun to have one just to watch shows and movies while travelling or to read at home.

£350 is probably as much as I'm willing to pay, just not for 64GB. I know already that between the operating system, the apps and the shows and movies I want to put on there to have options I'd also be juggling and it would only get worse. I made the big mistake of going for the smallest storage option on my one and only other iPad I ever bought and it was such a hassle.

Bump it up to 128GB and you've got a deal.

We always get destroyed here in aus. It’s sad. So strange how in so many regions they have such weird out of place conversions.

Apple Australia price shows A$599 and that includes GST while Apple U.S. prices don't include sales tax. A$599 less GST and then converted to USD is around $359 which is fairly close to U.S. price.

Don't be so doom-laden! All you need is the tiny $9.00 Apple adapter from USB-C to headphone jack. https://www.apple.com/shop/product/...09a820f3198dd4562224af79bfa40b5a187a84715ed43

And yet it's still $20 more expensive.

Yes, there's a whole lot more value for the money. This price point, however, is very close to the level where disposable income just doesn't exist, and it's that demographic that will be priced out by the increase.
Do you really think that the price of a couple of Starcrap lattes will deter anyone?

I manage IT in a district with 2,600 students K-6 and we moved to 10th Gen iPads last summer. DM me if you want to know more about our experience.

While I agree with you, the concern in schools is that often students are advised to BYO-headphones, which is always 3.5mm connector. Adapters will get lost. And most families can come up with some headphones and/or get them on Amazon for cheap. Introducing a 'USB-C only rule' adds complexity.

I'm not saying Apple should add the 3.5mm jack back into the base iPad, rather the headphone situation is a real concern for the EDU market.
