Yep, bottom right in portrait (top right in landscape) has a pinch/bleed that is brighter.

Been through 6 units now, keeping the best one……its not right but it’s ok (Whitney).

The series 9 screen is a downgrade from the 8.
Have you seen shadow edge on any of these 6 units?

Yeah it’s probably worth a try. If that one is defect too, I’ll probably (lose my mind and) try getting one from a different vendor as a last resort.
The 6 units I inspected were from 3 different suppliers, unfortunately Apple’s new random serial number system means it’s impossible to check when and where the unit was manufactured.

Unfortunately I can’t help you with that information as I did not activate 5 of the 6 units, I merely powered them on to check for bleed on the “black” boot screen.

The unit I set up fully (and plan to keep) does not exhibit any shadow lines or colour cast on white however.

Are you still within the return period for your unit?

Oh I totally forgot about this new serial number system. I had checked my 2 units with https://sndeep.info/en and it told me the original one was manufactured early December 2021, the replacement one in late November.
Well, my third unit is being processed and will probably arrive tomorrow. Wish me luck!?

As the Air launched in 2020 they must be continuing with the original serial number system until a new version launches.

This thread is also about the iPad 9th generation not the Air so they are different panels, one is fully laminated (Air) and one is not.

I hope you find an Air you are happy with.

I was hoping the QA would have been better on the 9th gen. But I guess Apple is still cutting corners. I returned 3 8th gen iPads for excessive backlight bleed. My old 7th gen has very, very little leakage. My iPad mini 2 had very little as well.

I recommend the 11” iPad Pro for very, very minimal to no backlight bleed. ( my 11” pro has zero backlight bleed) With that being said the budget iPads are still good for what they offer.

Yes well increased tolerance for the budget iPads is how they keep the prices so low. If you really care about such minor imperfections as backlight bleed, then you shouldn't be shopping the low budget line.

Like you say - iPad Pro is the way to go if the quality needs to show.

I own the 12.9 Pro and this (9th gen) and backlight bleed is unacceptable regardless of price point and was not an issue on the previous generation of this model.

I've had issues with darker corners on the right side of the screen on white pages on the 11 pros so I think the quality control is just meh across the board lol

Anytime a person is buying a panel/screen of any kind there is a lottery to be played. I just think the chances of getting an acceptable one is more in your favor with the pro-line.

Tbh, I had replacements. They all had that to some degree and I felt were more obvious than the darker areas of the screen on the ipad air and basic ipads even.

Hi all

Had a 9th gen for Christmas, it’s my first iPad and it’s great however it has a very small amount of light bleed in the lower right corner.

When watching movies with letterbox bands I can see it if brightness is higher.

I have looked around the forum and online and see that it’s not uncommon and exchanging can become a lottery just wondering if this is true?

I have an iPhone X and watch se and they have perfect screens I understand that they both use oled and led backlit screens are hit and miss ?
RE: iPad 9th Generation: I just noticed this on my 9th gen that I bought a month or so ago (well actually I had noticed it before when I first got it but didn't think it would come up into play). Then I started watching vids tonight on it and was like OMG, what have I done? Now I can't exchange it so I'm stuck with it. I have the same issue you do, bottom right hand corner, the bleeding affect comes out about maybe 1" from the edge of the display. There is a bit more bleeding around edges/corners but it's not as obvious as that lower right hand corner is. Kinda pissed about this but I guess it is what it is now.

EDIT: I just took a pic of the screen using a screen test app to check the backlighting, it actually looks worse in the photo than it does looking at the iPad lol, wow this is crazy! I guess these iPhone cameras ain't messin' around. 😂🤣

Shocking, return it or sell it and get a 11” pro, this problem has been going on since iPad 1 and stopped with the 11” pro. Would have to be free fir me to use that even then I’d sell it lol.

I just got the iPad 9th gen and mine is also exhibiting some backlight bleed however at least on my unit it’s worst near the top left of the display when holding in landscape. There’s some on the right side as well but it’s much smaller.

From what I’ve read on this thread it’s pretty common with the technology and iPads dating back to the 1/2. Got this thing for a sweet deal on Amazon though and everything else works great. I don’t feel like this iPad has specs that are overkill for my usage/ipados. I’ve had the iPad Mini 6 briefly before this and was overall pretty disappointed with it given the price. I also had the Air 4 way back which also had issues with bleeding.

Going to try to living with it. I know it will only bother me if I go purposely looking for it. At brightness levels up to 60ish percent it’s also barely visible. At night when I’m watching movies etc il probably use lower brightness as to not burn my eyes.

That’s the thing, most backlight bleeds can really only affect your usage in very specific scenarios or if you’re looking for it. But it’s the nature of the beast with lcd displays. They all have it to some degree

It is only the nature of the beast... when the beast is manufactured on the cheap. 😉 My iPad 1, iPad 2, iPad 4 had some light bleed. My iPad Air 2 did not. My 1st gen 12.9 iPad Pro did not. Surprisingly, my iPad 9th gen does not. My Samsung Tab A10 had slight light bleed. My Tab S6 and S6 Lite do not.

I think much depends on how high the brightness setting is cranked up. I keep mine relatively low to increase battery longevity before the next recharge, and also not a fan of bright, glaring displays. But I've never noticed bleed in my history with non-laminated iPads, right up to the current 9th (possibly because of the above).
