Yeah, so I was thinking since I have the new 2021 12.9” iPad Pro for my main source of entertainment and I strictly keep it in my living room at all times that maybe I should consider buying an iPad Air 4 for use around the house? With the Pro, I don’t take it around the house because I am worried about messing it up even though I have AppleCare+.

However, if I had an iPad Air 4 to compliment my Pro, I could worry a lot less about it. I could take it around the house with me as I move and even to bed which would be nice. I simply refuse to do those things with my Pro since it’s like my Holy Grail. Lol. ?

So, should I buy the Air 4? I’m definitely leaning in that direction at the moment.

I just have a case on my iPad and use it wherever I want. It’s a portable device so for me it would be a waste of money buying a second iPad in order to save you carrying it into another room. The Air is also an expensive tablet too so you’d have the same issues unless you have a decent case on it.

I have bad OCD and I do have a case on my Pro, but I’d feel a lot better about taking an Air around the house than my Pro. I know it sounds weird, but yeah. Plus I kinda want a smaller sized tablet for the portability factor too. Not that 10.9” is small, but it’s smaller and lighter than the 12.9” Pro is.

I buy 11” iPad Pro with magic keyboard case. I carry it around houses, in the bathroom, outside while walking etc. Best combo between portability and power. I just hope apple don’t gimp too hard on it because of smaller screen.

Fair enough, the Air 4 is a great iPad and at a good price point. More than happy with mine after using it for 6 months. Should last 5 years at least.

I'm fine with walking around the house with any iPad I'm currently using (including the 2021 12.9).

That said, I like the Air 4 as my EDC iPad. The 9-11" size class fits in all my purses (barely) whereas the 12.9", I'd have to carry a backpack or laptop bag.

I am waiting for my upgrade from 11” pro (2018) to the new 12.9”. When the most recent Mini came out I got one of those too - I keep it next to bed for reading and bring it with me when I want to travel light. It’s worked out well for me to have two - they definitely serve different purposes.

I would just keep that cash and buy a brand new 12.9/pay the Apple Care fee in the event something happens. The Air isn't exactly cheap either.

If the iPad was making you money, I could see a reason for a backup.

I was on the same boat, but I picked up a brand new 11” iPad Pro (2020) last month for the same price as a brand new iPad Air 4. It was a no brainer.

I've thought the same thing, merely because I regret not getting the cellular model of the 12.9. But it would be cheaper and more useful for me to get a Mini than an Air.

No. I can’t believe we are discussing whether you need to buy a second iPad because you are scared to move your current one to a different room in your home. You even already bought AppleCare. I would be more sympathetic if you wanted a second one for work or leaving home.

Seems overkill, Tthe reason why I got Applecare + is for peace of mind, I would not need another "safety net" (Is there an Applecare+ for Applecare+ ?... I broke my Applecare+).

Also consider that messing your iPad up would cost you less than the Air.

Personally I use the Pro (12.9 2021) everyday, AC+ gives me all the safety I need.

I would save money, that might go for your "next" iPad when the time comes.

Seems silly to me. The iPad Air is expensive. Just put that cash in an “insurance account”. If something happens to your iPad, use it to deal with it. That way you have all the benefits of the iPad Pro any time you’re using an iPad.

just my opinion though, it’s your money. ?

If you do decide to go ahead, and are concerned about breaking something expensive, maybe consider the standard iPad?

Clearly it doesn’t make financial sense when you could just replace your 12.9 for cheaper if something happened. Sounds like you just want a smaller tablet, in which case, it’s your life - do whatever you want

So basically, it doesn't make sense to any one else, but you seem to want it, so go ahead and get it. You don't need anyone's permission, much less from strangers! Personally, I can't imagine having an iPad to use only in one room.

So... lets say you buy an Air, wouldn't you be afraid to get it messed up? Then you'll need a regular iPad to use so your Air can stay prestine. I think the priority would be getting over your OCD and not the Air.

People who suffer from OCD don't just "get over it." They learn to cope and manage the symptoms on their own or maybe with treatment. I think the scenario described by the OP is more than understandable and deserves empathy. Certainly there are plenty of other MR members who own more than one iPad. People come here to talk about these kinds of buying decisions, and I think it's brave for anyone to mention that OCD is a factor. It's not for any of us to tell someone here to just "get over it."

I had that same OCD issue. I got a cheaper car to use as a daily driver while I parked my expensive car. I did the same with clothes. Etc.

Only difference is I got over it because I got sick of doing it. Caudling someone isn’t always the way to go. It makes you feel like you’re the compassionate one so you feel better about yourself. But it doesn’t necessarily help the person. Empower them to make changes.

Anyway, OP, you yourself said you don’t need the iPad. So don’t get it and force yourself to use the 12.9 or trade it for a 11. Work on your OCD.

I have a 12.9 and a mini iPad, but not for any kind of backup purposes. This iPad combo covers the widest range of uses, and more importantly all the uses that are important to me. But everyone is different, two sizes don’t fit all. In any case, it’s not outrageous to have multiple iPads if they’re each better at serving different purposes.

I’ve been working on my OCD for the past 15 years of my life and have seeked professional help for it. I have been medicated and everything done to help it, but there’s no cure for the OCD I experience. When you wash your hands so many times until your hands dry out and start cracking and bleeding then you might have an understanding of the torment and pain I have went through these past 15 years. I can’t sit down in my recliner and watch a movie without getting up half a dozen times. It’s maddening.

I don’t mean to vent, especially not on here, but OCD has ruined the quality of my life and you seem to think I can just “work through it.” If it was that simple I would have done it, but it’s not. I won’t be buying a second iPad because I really don’t need it in the end. I’m sorry for the inconvenience my thread has caused.

Are there benefits to the Air 4 above the iPad Gen 8? If your iPad Pro is your main device, the Gen 8 would be a much cheaper complementary device and perhaps leave you less anxious about wear and tear.

Whatever you decide I hope you enjoy the hell out of it and it leaves you less anxious.

While I agree it's not easy, the minute you post this kinda thing you are sure to be getting mixed replies.

Fact is, no one will convince one way or the other, there afre good argument on each side that are right, in the end it's your OCD that decides for you anyway.

I can tell you million times not to buy it because it is the "sensible" thing to do, you end up saving money (even if you have plenty it's no reason to waste it) and no one can guaranteee you your iPad Air will get the same treatment, as someone pointed out, you might end up getting a mini not to ruin the Air...rinse and repeat.

You also already have AC+wich was ment to be a safety net.

I could go on and say buy it, if money is no issue and it makes you feel better (will it? see above) it's the sensible things to do, and it's not the end of the world having 2 iPad.

As I said, both side have good arguments, but no one will ever convince you, so this kind of post is silly, because it seems you only want people telling you you are doing the right thing, when there's no right or wrong answer.

Do not look for approval do what you feel it's right for you (no one but you has to live with yourself), some will get it and agree, some will not and disagree.

I think the priority would be getting over your OCD and not the Air.
If only things were that easy, try telling a suicidal, hey get over it, see if that makes a difference (fyi it does, but the exact opposite of what you are trying to achieve), there's no switch for some problems., and those kinda reply usually works the opposite way!
