I thought about this question for a while and my other answer is not going to replace my laptop. It will replace my pen and paper because of the Apple Pencil support.

I have been Executor to both of my parents’ estates, with a need for dozens of official scans of documents, creation and sending of faxes (for USA purposes) and emails of the pdfs created. ScannerPro is an essential tool for that job and the quality of imaging is excellent.

The only shortcoming is for large documents of many pages, which a domestic, unfed scanner would be no better at.

Can you create one PDF from multiple pages on that app?

Also, have you tried the note app for this purpose?

I am in the process of seeing how it works out. I waffled for a while between the 12.9 and the 10.5 and ended up settling on the 10.5, especially since aside from display size, specs were equal. I do many different things at work: website management/design, organize freight, update various inventory feeds, HR, IT, a lot of creative stuff like ads and catalogs. I didn't think it would work out but when my wife gives me a challenge...
So far I have been able to make it work but not without changing the way I do some things. Organizing freight hasn't changed, but updating various inventories required a browser switch to Chrome. For some reason it handles some of the different varieties of web forms better than Safari. Hoping that changes as I prefer Safari overall. My MacBook Pro had no issues using Safari to access the EDI platforms.
Regarding the different creative projects- Affinity Photo is working very well as a Photoshop substitute but not after a decent chunk of time invested in learning the workflow. What we do is relatively simple anyways. Affinity Designer is meeting my needs for random artwork that needs to be created and I'm waiting for Affinity Publisher with open arms. I use Adobe InDesign A LOT. So until they release Affinity Pub I am still using InDesign. I anticipate that Publisher will work fine after a little time getting used to the controls, etc. Looking forward to giving Adobe the boot because that monthly fee is some serious ********. HTML Egg is working well for web design and updates, in fact I really enjoy using it on the iPad.
-I love the pencil. Figuring out the different ways you can use it within apps is fun and drawing on it is pretty fantastic. I did put on a Paperlike Matte protector and it just elevates the feel even more.
-I use a monitor connected to the iPad and it...helps. I can't tell you why specifically as it is nothing but a mirror display but it helps. I'll try to figure out how to better describe how it helps me and edit this.
-I use a magic keyboard and carry with with me when I travel. If I need it I'm usually responding to emails or web work or filling out Bills of Lading. I tried the Apple Keyboard but I felt like I was hunched over the iPad at my desk, plus I have a weird desk anyways.
-I don't run super complicated spreadsheets but I like editing them on the iPad. Touch the cell, edit and go.

Anyways, it's working. And it's easier carrying on travel, watching movies, playing games. Seems plenty powerful for what I need. In fact, it squashed my father-in-laws 2012 i7 MacBook Pro when I geek benched them and that was just for fun.

I think the point is a document scanner is much more useful for this purpose just as a flatbed scanner has its limitations for speed and efficiency

Ipads are disposable, i have repaired the macbook air more times then iwanted.
I’ve had iPads since 2010 and haven’t had a need to repair them, my Air on the other hand has had its battery expand and become a danger to itself. My 2010 iPad is still working, just not in as much use these days - there is something to be said for reliable design even if it is all glued together.

Sorry, don’t quite follow you.
The original author I think was saying it would be a pain to use ScannerPro to take scans just as a flatbed scanner would take a bit of time to use. A document scanner seems to be the way to go for larger projects.

If you buy an iPad Pro, keep your MBP 2015. It's a fantastic laptop and there's no need to get rid off it. For prolonged and comfortable use on the sofa or in bed, the Macbook is a better device.

Wipe it clean and put a new battery in it in 1-2 years and it will feel brand new.

I hear what you are saying, but I have had my iPad Pro for about a week and a half now and I haven’t touched my MBP since then. I’m going to give it some more time before I make a final decision but so far it isn’t looking like I’ll have any need for the MBP at least for what I’m using stuff for while mobile.

Let the honeymoon period get over before making a decision.

Had my 12.9” iPad Pro 2017 for 10 months now, have not had to use my MBP 2014 since then. Coupled with the Smart Keyboard and for my mainly typing workflow I use the cloud (not iCloud) for all my document, media storage. I have the 64GB WiFi model. I did not need the Apple Pencil as I do not illustrate, however if I do I know the option is available.

Lightening wired earplugs and Bluetooth earplugs, along with the Smart Keyboard are the only things attached to this iPad. If only the Lightening connector was wireless charging/mag induction (AW), I would have nothing sticking out from the sides of this beauty.

I agree.

When my MBP was in for a free battery replacement I got used to the iPad Pro. Even when the Mac returned after 2 weeks I found the laptop a bit heavy. Within a few days I started gravitating back to the Mac for browsing and youtube in the evening as it's so comfortable to lie down, laying it on the tummy without having to support or preventing it form tipping. The MBP screen is bigger too.

In the kitchen however, I prefer the iPad as it has a small foot print and is easy to place to watch youtube while I eat, tidy or do dishes.

To me, the MPB and iPad are complementary rather than replacements for one another.

Give the LogiBase charging dock a shot! Love it for charging my iPad via the SmartConnector.

I find I am using my iPad Pro 12.9” 2017 a lot more than my iMac. It is more pleasurable to use (for me) and I find a lot more reliable. It does have limitations, but those are all software limitations and get less and less over time.

Yea for me I’m full time on my iPad Pros (have both sizes of the 2nd gen) - I have a Mac mini with a super fast Internet connection that makes using JumpDesktop a pleasure to use on the iPad when I do need to do one of the few things I still have a need for on macOS.

I have found I use my 10.5pro more than my iMac. I sold my mbp a few months ago because I wasn’t using it. In reality, all i need is this iPad and I can live. I have the pencil and Smart Keyboard. I really only use my iMac for video editing which tbh I’ve lost interest. I can do pretty much everything on my iPad that I need to do. Work, media consumption ect. It also pairs great with airpods and is super portable.

No, the iPad Pro is not qualified as a laptop replacement.

The bug with the Smart Keyboard has not sovled yet. It will still randomly disconnect as of the latest iOS version.

Lack of pro apps is the more serious shortcomings.
I never had any problems with the Smart Keyboard randomly disconnecting

The iPad is hands down way more comfortable to use on a sofa or bed than a mbp in every angle.

The 12.9. With the ASK on the sofa, it's still just a little unstable for long work. I run into this if I am taking notes in a meeting and I am not sitting at the table.

I can't type as fast on the virtual keyboard as the Smart Keyboard, but I am working on getting better with it.

Buy an Apple Pencil and you will be impressed. 3 months ago i bought a synology nas and never looked back. I couldn’t believe that with synology apps moving and downloading torrents,mp3s,general files etc would be easier done compared to a PC.... MBP 13 2016 sold and PC era done for me. The funny thing is that I don’t design or draw anything with Apple Pencil....but its pure joy and adds easiness to just browse everything on your iPad with it.

What kind of work do you do?

When I graduated school I sold my MBP since I wasn’t using it and the iPad worked great for me. Now that I am going back to school I got a MacBook again. Everyone’s situation and needs are different, and they often change over time.

If my MPB gives up the ghost I will unlikely buy a new Macbook(too expensive) and can survive without it as I no longer download music or torrent movie/tv-series.

For a desktop environment I can use the work-laptop which is a glorious maxed out XPS13 with 16GB RAM and a 4K touch screen.

As long as iPad can’t run full version of Microsoft Office or Apple iWork, it can not be used as a laptop replacement. I think Microsoft and Apple intentionally crippled the iPad version just so that people would buy a Mac or Windows machine if they want to use the full version of their office suites.

This type of conspiracy theories just don’t hold any water.

And people don’t use computers just to use office tools.
