Yep this is exactly what I did. It’s a feature I was unsure is available on the iPad, or do people without a computer forego this ability?

I did a search for backing up iPhone to iPad, and it doesn't appear to be possible. I mean, you can send selective stuff wirelessly to your devices, but not a full backup. And yes, if you don't have a Mac or PC, the only option you have is the cloud. Would be really nice imo if Apple would make it possible to backup your phone to the iPad. If there is a way, I just haven't found it yet.

Yeah, iPadOS doesn’t currently support this. If you’re using an iPad as only computer on hand, then iCloud is the way to go for device backups. 👍🏻

Thanks both, that’s what I thought. No worries for me though as I have an iMac and MacBook Air (my last job let me buy it for an absolute steal!) but stuff like that I think would help to make the iPad a genuinely viable replacement

Absolutely. 👍🏻. I’m hoping they will add it in the future. 👍🏻. But yeah, for now, you can save local backups on a Mac or Windows PC via iTunes or Apple Devices app I think. But yeah, would definitely be better to be able to save local backups on iPad of other devices. 👍🏻

I do have a M1 Mac Mini on hand, so sometimes I use it for saving local backups of devices, but ever since I increased my iCloud storage, I use iCloud for my device backups, so I don’t do that often anymore except for running betas. But since I’m using my Mac Mini plus some connected drives as my own “private cloud” storage solution for backing up project files and such, it works pretty well that way. So I’m not an iPad-only user, but I am definitely an iPad-primary user, as I rarely ever use my Mac Mini for anything other than that “private cloud” storage setup. 👍🏻

The downside would be the amount of *pricey* storage it would take up - unless Apple supported making the backup to attached storage.

Couldn’t it be moved to attached storage? In my case I only needed it temporarily so could delete it right after anyway, but it seems like a viable solution for someone who has that issue to just move them to an external drive if storage was a premium on the iPad.

It could only be moved if Apple made it accessible for transfers.
