$350 for a Surface Go a good deal?

This is without the keyboard and the pen, right? It's not a bad price, but you'll need the keyboard cover and I think the pen is absolutely necessary to get the most out of it.

which one? If that's the entry level model, then it is an "ok" deal, but the specs are not very good for a Win 10 tablet.

4gb/64 entry level. It’s the only device that is like 1-2 lbs with at least a 1080p display.

I was looking at 2-1 for HP and Dell, but they weigh like 3-4 lbs.

I would just buy the keyboard cover and a wireless mouse. The Pen isn’t something I’ll use much.

I didn’t read most of the thread but wanted to write that I had to buy a Chromebook for one of my kids. I bought the Google Pixelbook and it really changed the way I regard Chromebooks.

That machine is fast, thin, lightweight, aesthetically beautiful and a joy to use. For casual use, that machine could be ideal.

Although I've owned a few chromebook sin the past, getting a Pixelbook really changed how and what I do with chromebooks... even for serious work.

I would also be interested in your experience if you get a Surface Go as I'm also considering a Surface.

  • The screen is very nice, especially with watching hockey games and Netflix.
  • Not sure about battery life because haven't used it for a full cycle, but my expectations aren't that much due to the form factor needing a small battery with a fanless design.
  • Boot speed isn't bad at all, especially since tablets are meant to do more basic stuff with ease.
  • Tableau didn't lag so far with basic stuff like workbook files.
  • I had trouble getting out of S Mode for a bit and that was due to software bugs.
  • The weight is pretty nice and it's quite portable.
  • I won't overload the thing and I hope it stays pretty consistent going forward since it's a long term purchase.
  • Definitely will miss some aspects on the iPad like the apps and relatively basic OS when tablet things are concerned.
  • Microsoft gives a nice premium build too, especially with the kickstand aspect.
  • You can definitely do a lot more on this little guy, so it's much more versatile than iOS.
  • iOS is only really good an iPhone and the more affordable iPads. It's not really that great value wise on the 2018 iPad Pro imo.
  • If you're looking to do work, the Surface is the way you may want to consider going.

@nviz22,

Thanks for following up. I appreciate your thoughts. I'm really leaning in this direction for my next purchase.

No problem. It's on sale right now too, so you can get $50 off the 4gb RAM models (64gb eMMC or 128gb SSD model) or you can get the 8gb RAM model with 128gb SSD. Hope you enjoy yours. Make sure you purchase is soon because it could sell out quick.

I was leaning toward a Lenovo 2-in-1 convertible (like the Yoga 730), but I see that the Surface Pro 6 bundle is on sale now and that is tempting... :)

I would like to keep it to $250 or less out of pocket, including selling or trading in my iPad mini 4. Thanks for the input.
HP Stream 11" or 14"

( remove Windows and put Linux - something like Ubuntu if you are new to linux ).
Or just go with the 2018 iPad
https://www.apple.com/ipad-9.7/

Both will serve your needs well. I think the iPad would be more portable and worth more at the three year mark for resale. But, as mentioned, we are a bit biased here.

I decided to pay up the $ for the Go + keyboard. iPad 2018 looks nice, but it can't run Tableau on it from what I saw. Only Tableau Mobile. Thanks though.

I'll probably use my Surface Go until it dies. Maybe I would grab an iPad when the 2018 model gets to the $150 mark in a year or two lol.
