I have just received my new iPad Pro 12.9” to replace my old iPad Pro 1st Gen. I am going to be comparing the two and posting back my thoughts.

1Q8A3982.jpeg

I will be expanding this post over the course of the day as I spend more time with the new iPad and how it compares to the old.

First a quick spec comparison between the two.

Spec Comparision iPad.jpg

The new iPad was configured with 256GB storage and 8GB RAM.

In terms of what I use an iPad for is media consumption (Movies), eMail, MacRumors posts, curating my Photo’s Library, and browsing the Web. I have a M1 MacBook Air, which I tend to use for work and anything that involves typing. I also have a 27” Intel iMac that I use for spreadsheet work and video and photo editing.

Because I have a MacBook Air for portable typing I decided not to get the new Apple Smart Keyboard and opted for the Otterbox Case. I had an Apple Keyboard case for the old iPad, but never really used it.

I have also bought an Apple Pencil (I did have one for the old iPad as well, but did not use it that much). I am looking to use the pencil to take notes digitally and perhaps for editing photos.

The original iPad Pro was being used everyday and still felt fast and responsive. However it is now almost 6 years old and thought it was time to upgrade. My old iPad will be passed to my wife. I am particularly interested in how the new screen performs with HDR content and try out spatial audio with the AirPods Pro.

My initial reaction is the screen is fantastic, and really like the smaller bezels as it makes the iPad significantly smaller, while maintaining the same screen size.

I also love the new setup process where you can transfer everything from your old iPad to the new, rather than go through iCloud to restore or from a backup on your Mac. The iPad is currently transferring data from the old to the new. As soon as it is finished I start to do some comparisons and post back my thoughts. If you are interested keep checking back as I will edit the first post rather than add new posts. However if anyone has any specific questions I will respond to those with a separate reply.

Taking Photo's

I don't think I will use the iPad for photography, but its clear the camera is much improved from the 1st Gen iPad.

IMG_0004.jpeg
IMG_0339.jpeg

Image on the left is from the new iPad Pro, Much sharper and better definition. some of the highlights are blown out on the old 1st Gen iPad on the right.

HDR Video

Night and Day Comparison. Colours are brighter and more saturated. Blacks are much deeper. I did a quick side to side comparison shown below. The 2021 iPad Pro is on the left, 2015 iPad on the right.

Brightness on both iPads set to 100%. Video was captured with a iPhone 10, using FilmicPro.

Face ID

Face ID is an interesting one on the iPad. I have an iPhone X, and it works great on that and I love Face ID. I have the tendency to get dry skin on the tips of my fingers and that plays havoc with the fingerprint reader on the 1st Gen iPad Pro (However I don't usually have a problem with Touch ID on the M1 MBA). However Face ID can be problematic with the new world of Covid and face masks. Face ID works well on the new iPad in Portrait mode and is quick to unlock. However it is a problem if you hold the iPad in Landscape mode as my fingers tend to cover the camera. This is a known issue and I am surprised Apple has not added a camera at the top in Landscape mode, presumably because of the additional cost.

Battery Life

About 5 Hours ago both iPad had battery at 100%. Not exactly a 100% accurate test, but both iPad have been used for around the same time. The new iPad still has 86% battery remaining, the 1st Gen iPad Pro is down to 20%, mainly because both screens were set to 100%. To be fair to the 1st Gen iPad the battery is getting on for 6 years old now.

Spatial Audio

Just watched and listened to some Star Wars : The Rise of Skywalker. Definite improvement is visuals and the audio. Spatial Audio really feels like you are in the middle of the action.

Scrolling Scrolling (Raw Hide)

This is probably going to be a little bit controversial, but it's just my opinion. In 2017 Apple introduced the 2nd Gen iPad Pro with a 120Hz ProMotion display. While many people really thought it made a difference, I went to the Apple store and played with one of the new iPads and I struggled to see any significant difference. Even in 2021 with the new M1 iPad Pro's I can't see much difference in scrolling smoothness between the 2015 iPad and the 2021 iPad. Perhaps a testament to how good the original iPad Pro's were, or maybe due to my old eyes.

I put together a short video that looks at the scrolling in Safari of the 2021 iPad v the 2015 iPad. If you can see a significant difference then good for you.

Initial thoughts at the end of day one of the 2021 iPad.

I am pleased with my purchase, the mini LED screen is amazing. The iPad is smaller and easier to handle than the 1st Gen Pro that it replaces. The Battery life is much improved and spatial audio with the Air Pods Pro is also a great addition.

That having being said the 1st Gen iPad is still a fast machine, and while the new iPad is noticeably quicker at loading apps, its not a dramatic improvement. If anyone has a 2018 or later iPad I would think carefully before upgrading as of right now the M1 is delivering more power than the iPad needs. The problem with the iPad is not the hardware but iPadOS, which still has it's roots in a Phone OS. Yes Apple has now split it off from iOS, but it is still too limiting for the power that the M1 has. The iPad needs a better file management system and to move further away from iOS. It also needs more Pro Apps to really make use of the new hardware. I am hoping that this will be addressed in a few weeks time at WWDC.

Well I have come across my first small issue. I was waiting ages for my iPad data migration to complete. I started to get concerned when it had been going for an hour and no progress on the progress bar. I then realised what the problem was. The old iPad Pro is on the current Public Beta release of iPadOS 14.6. My new iPad is on current release of iPadOS. So I am now enrolling my new iPad into the Beta program , Upgrading to the Latest Beta release then restoring so I can then migrate my data. Will be a while before I post more comparisons...

Very interesting post.
I have same 1st gen iPad Pro and use for same consumption as yourself..... ;)
As I never sell or give away any Apple devices, I will continue to use it till it feels slow, which at the minute doesn't.
This was a benefit of buying the 'pro' device, it lasts a lot longer.

I agree, the 1st Gen iPad is still a great machine, amazing really given that it is almost 6 years old.

I bought the pencil after about a year, but only started using it recently.....?
Again, another fantastic device, it can sit on the desk with a full charge for weeks (the pencil).

Thanks for your observations. You are in the same boat as I am although you got your new one before I did. I am really looking forward to mine and your review makes me want it even more. I think the smaller size is going to be what I notice the most despite all the hype about the mini LED screen which I’m sure is wonderful also.

@James_C I too have just upgraded from my 6 year old iPad Pro 1st gen to the new 5th gen…
… all is a much better experience so far, apart from ’.mov’ 1080p 12Mbs files from one dash cam that stutter, stop and start every second. These run smoothly on my 1st gen iPad Pro - I’ve tried sending new copies, including from another identical dash cam model, to the new iPad but they still stutter…
… any ideas anyone?

Update:
I’ve attached an example… viewing on this page is fine on my 1st gen but stutters on my new 5th gen…
… please let me know what you see on your new iPad - maybe mine has a fault ?

Update 2:
The below video works fine running from this page in Safari but the quality seems reduced, however, running the original mov file from Photos and that still stutters. Perhaps that could be tried too please..
By ’stutter’ it seems to show a brief movement but actually stops exactly every second.

I get the same stutter using Photos, VLC and mp Movie Player - all work fine on my iPad 1st gen.

Update 3:
I have now found an App that plays the .mov files mentioned above on my 5th gen iPad Pro - MediaConvert…
… doesn’t seem right I had to pay for an App to play these files when a 6 year old iPad 1st gen is fine with them?

I’ve tried to delete the example (mov.) below as it was compressed after upload so didn’t show the fault…
... unfortunately although I hit the trashcan ? I Icon during an Edit session it comes back :-(
Unless anyone knows how I can upload a full 16MB file without it being compressed I can’t provide an failing example.

I’ve also updated my reply to @James_C below - this is obviously an obscure codec fault so shouldn't put anyone off. I can’t find any other video files that have issues and in all other respects, see my comments below, I’m exceedingly pleased I upgraded to the iPad Pro 5th gen.

Thanks for sharing your take on similarities and differences.

How much difference do you find with text, such as Kindle books or web browsing?

Thanks for this @James_C - looks like the upload reduces the resolution…
… unfortunately, there does‘t seem to be a away of getting the original 16MB file for you to try via the forum?
My brother is waiting for his identical iPad Pro 5th gen to arrive so I’ll see what his makes of these (MOV.) files - I’ll update when I know.

At least the Media Converter App runs them perfectly without converting and I‘ve not found any other video sources that have issues - guess it could be a codec issue…
… can I ask, did you restore from a backup of your iPad Pro 1st gen, or a new installs?

On a more positive note I found You Tube now play 4K HDR and look amazing :)

Final Update:
The example (mov.) in my post above was compressed after upload so doesn't show the fault…

My brother has now also upgraded and transferred from his iPad Pro 1st gen to a 5th gen…
… as I, he was also very impressed with the improvements seen from HDR 4K image and video viewing, the massive speed increase running and switching Apps and the 8GB of memory is certainly enough for us.

He also sees the stutter with the same (mov.) files so I guess this means it’s a codec issue and I’ll log a support request with Apple. I’ll post an update if/when I see a fix - also see my updated post above.

I just found this thread and had a question about how you set up the new iPP from the old one. I was doing the same with my new 5th gen 12.9 from my 2018 12.9 but quick start never appeared on the 2018. I had brought it over to the new one when the quick start option was offered on the new iPad, the 2018 was on the latest iOS software with both WiFi and Bluetooth active. To complete the set up I had to bring my phone over which immediately displayed the quick start screen and the set up of the new iPP continued with no issues.

Later I tried doing the same after wiping the 2018 which my wife is now using. She had the original 12.9 as you did. But again when the quick start option appeared on the 2018 after restarting it the feature did not appear on her 1st gen when I brought it close. Again I had to bring her phone over and the set up feature immediately appeared and completed with no issues. I’ve used this feature several times when setting up new phones but had never done it with an ipad. Never had a problem, once the option was offered on the new phone it immediately appeared on the old phone when I brought it over. Does this feature require something else to work from ipad to ipad?

It was a bit messy to be honest as my old iPad Pro was running the latest beta release of iPad OS, you can only transfer from the same or earlier release of iPad OS. I had to set up new iPad as a vanilla iPad, enroll it in the Public Beta and update it, then wipe it. I was then able to use quick setup to transfer all my apps and data.

Thanks I and a couple others apparently didn’t have quick set up option appear on the old iPad. For myself it came up immediately on my phone when I brought it over. A mystery why it didn’t appear on the iPad.

Did you find your 2015 iPP to be laggy in typing and browsing on iPadOS 14.x? Did you find the beta for iPadOS 15 to be much improved over 14? I'm reinstalling 13.7 to try to deal with the issues we are having with 14.x (14.3, 14.4, 14.7.1 - all have serious lagging problems).

I have both the 2015 and the 2018 12.9 and I don't find the 2015 laggy... except in some heavy websites like gmail and youtube, which only some more sophisticated users use, while most people just use the (much more optimized) apps.
My mini 4 has instead become very laggy on iPados 14 and I have decided not to upgrade my 9.7 pro and leave on 13. However I wonder how do you reinstall 13.7? Do you have to jailbreak the devices?
