Apple doesn't offer student discounts on macbooks and macs just because they are nice. They offer it because they want to grab the student market.
Most students in college are without jobs and the first choice their first pick will be the cheaper PC laptops and desktops if it weren't for the student discount + free iPod Touch from Apple.
The real motivation behind the discount is to grab as much of the student market as possible. This demographic is also gullible to the "coolness" of Apple products. This strategy may not work too well with the older generation and it doesn't need to, cause they have more money.
Just don't assume they are giving discounts cause they are nice. They just want to grab market share.
With the iPods and iPads and iPhones, it is a different story. These things sell like crazy. They have so much demand, that they cant match their production. People even buy these on Craigslist and Ebay, sometimes even at retail price or over it.
In a situation like this, why would Apple sell them a discounted price?
