Also, to switch between apps during the lesson, or whatever, you will probably want tabs or something such as a current full OS has, so that apps can run simultaneously. Quitting an app to get to another is abhorrent in a learning situation - it just wastes time. However, if I could use the iPad as a book on the other hand..... properly, and ensure accuracy is that to a pen...

I can honestly say that the iPad will be perfect for me as a college student. I am starting UF's online bachelors program this summer and up until last night I had zero plans to get the iPad at all. I have been thinking that I have 4 hours worth of lectures to watch per class per week, all school work is done online, I travel ALOT, and to top it off, I ABSOLUTELY need a good calendar/tasks app to keep track of all my schoolwork due dates. I have a MacBook which I use for my main computer at home plus stuff for my business and I really wanted something separate for school. Then it hit me, the iPad! The calendar/tasks app is built in and extremely robust. Its perfect for what I need. It will be perfect for me to watch my lectures on as its small and light and easy for me to tote around and also to get comfortable with while laying back and watching lectures. It has iWork so I can do all of my school papers and other work on (I would use my MacBook for long papers or use my bluetooth keyboard). It has email so I can get my school email on it. Of course the primary thing is internet for me to log into my classes and to do discussions and other work. I might be able to get several textbooks for my classes on it. When I need books for research or papers I can get them on the iPad. I can have 3G available so I can truly use it anywhere. Its really the perfect tool for me as an online student and now I plan on getting one.

Just out of interest, what subjects are you studying?

I wasn't thinking there would really be an educational impact, but I may rethink that if this starts happening more often:

Looks good, doesn't it? Of course, as I wrote on my site, it is a little easier making this happen when your total enrollment is only 2100 students, but it is still a cool idea.

If the University of Illinois were to do this they'd raise tuition $1000. (Not that they don't plan on raising tuition without giving students the iPad.)

iPad should handle most of a "normal" college student's needs for a PC. So long as they never need to print/plot or run heavy duty apps that are only available for powerhouse PCs. In my college you need a current PC and the ability to run a slew of apps including photoshop, all of AutoDesk's products, and any other 3D CAD app currently being used in Architecture and related fields. A large screen is also recommended, as most students multitask with a CAD app running, their browser, a chat app, internet TV, and a game or two.

In the student Union, every table will have one or more student accessing their email/text messaging/game playing/etc., just fine on their cell phone. I don't doubt a few will show up with iPads for those tasks, but it sure seems like overkill using a 24 ounce notepad sized device when the phone they are already carrying can do those jobs.

Disclaimer: I teach at a midwest university.

If you're going to be majoring in English....

I am a college student and I plan on getting one "eventually" because I plan on majoring in english so i will be taking a lot of lit classes and being able to have all my book stored on a device will be nice and there are textbook apps out already i guess.

If you're going to be majoring in English, perhaps you'd like to begin work on your skills. First lesson, commas.

Also--reading literature and poetry on an electronic device for class?! Come on! The tactile feedback of a book is one of the greatest impetuses for close reading.

I think at this point a regular macbook would be better for college. Larger storage and better price. There are deals for refurbished macs from time to time if you are on a tight budget. Nonetheless the iPad is just fantastically cool. :)

I just got the pogo sketch stylus to take notes with and it is horrible. If you want to take notes it'd gonna have to be with either the onscreen keyboard or the keyboard dock/bluetooth keyboard. It's a bummer. If you rest your hand on the screen you can't imput with the stylus. Not good for handwritten notes at all loke I thought it would be

ipad for a college computer?

i was wondering if the ipad would be able to be a college computer. im currently looking at some but would it be better for the price and features when compared to something like a macbook?

No you will need a MacBook. I tested this out and it doesn't work, no file system and no multitasking hurts it pretty bad. Also, it doesn't support the software most school websites run on. And, you will need a computer for it, especially if you have an iPod you want to sync your music to it. I say go for a MacBook, iPad isn't there yet.

100% Agree

I completely agree the iPad isn't a replacement for a Notebook and for the time being not likely to be any time soon. The MacBook is a great machine.

I'm considering taking my iPad back. Not because I don't like it but because of shortcomings in a few specific areas. Apple implied the iPad might be a college machine when they announced iWork for iPad. However the lack of a filesystem really interferes with using it that way. I picked up goodreader, and airsharing HD. So now when i receive a PDF, it doesn't offer to let me open it with goodreader, it insists on opening it with airsharing HD. This is because of the missing filesystem. I know some fanboys will come along and rant about how this thing is great but without a filesystem it's just a five hundred dollar iPod. I watched a movie in the netflix app last night. On a 9.7in screen, it's ok for watching in bed, alone or even with one other person but it's not a good solution for family viewing. I'm not saying mine is going back for sure but its a strong possibility. Another thing. Typing. Trying to keep up taking notes in a lecture on this thing is a nightmare. I know. I've tried. Just typing this post I made about 64 mistakes, half of which required backspacing to fix.

I'm excited about this new form factor but I'm nit liking the toying ir the lack if a filesystem. Notice the last sent in e u didn't back ho to fix anything. That's how bad jtj is. I can't get used ti jeering (keeping autocorrected to jeering) all my fingers in the air to type.

It's a fantastic companion tool and can do a lot of what notebooks can do, but not enough to totally phase notebooks out. Get the MacBook.

Depends on what type of classes you take. I take a few programming classes, so the ipad only approach would not work for me at all. If you just write a lot of papers, then maybe.
