iPad in hospital

I have today been admitted to hospital with an unspecified infection, could be here a few days.
The hospital has full on wifi connectivity and I have my 32gb iPad with me, I think I wll really enjoy my stay here.

Sorry to hear it--I've been in nearly the exact same situation for the past 2 days (2 yr old son has the infection, unfortunately
). Thankfully, the wifi here is surprisingly good (3-4 mbps) and iPad has been a godsend for passing time, especially with the limited TV choices for a 2 yr old. Thank goodness for Netflix and Air Video apps .
My husband ended up in the hospital having surgery to have his appendix out 2 days after I got my iPad. Thankfully I had brought it along when he went in for x-rays. It gave me something to do while I was waiting for him to get out of surgery and out of recovery.
Best part was, when I was waiting for the dr. to come in and talk to me after the surgery, he walked into the room, saw my iPad and was like "Ohhhh, is that an iPad?". Almost forgot to talk to me about my husband.

I was at the Children Hospital at Boston visiting my little nephew few weeks ago. Surprisingly WiFi was available free for guess everywhere in the hospital. Although, I have 3G iPad. I used WiFi when I can. The funny thing was: every doctors/nurses passed by, they stopped and checked out my iPad... it's a people magnet..

I do volunteer work at a local hospital and I see quite a few patients struggling to use laptops in bed. Not a pretty sight. Sometimes they are seated in bed with their legs crossed. Sometimes they are out of bed sitting in a chair. Sometimes they are lying on their side staring at the thing 11 inches from their face. At no time did I see a patient who was in what I would call a "restful" posture trying to use a computer. An iPad is an ideal device for patient use as it can be comfortably used lying down.
I expect to see hospital staff carrying iPads around soon as well. Once patient charts are (eventually) kept on a (secure) web server, they can be updated from the iPad using safari. No special software required. For now it's all paper charts and windows laptops on awkward carts. (Yuck).

I live in Finland and the funny thing is people here seem to be oblivious to the iPads existence, however it Is really keeping me sane as I am sharing a room with too old men who just fart continuously.
I wish I could be at home with my son as laying here with needles in my hand is not what in would consider a good use of my time.

Actually, I've said this before in other threads long ago, but I think the iPad would be ideal for patients receiving IV chemo. It entails long, boring hours of sitting in hospital with an IV drip, and many hospitals seem to have WiFi now. Plus they are so lightweight and easy to handle.

IV ceftriaxone (or azithromycin?) should hopefully work wonders for the pneumonia.You're both lucky to have wifi in the hospital - none of the two I've worked at do, and depending on the room location you could be out of luck with AT&T.
As for doctors - we're still a long ways from carrying iPads around I think. My hospital only just finally updated from a DOS system for their electronic orders software.
Yep, that bad. Most computers are still XP and IE6 sadly. The finances aren't there at most institutions for that kind of upgrade. But over half my residency class carries iPhones in their white coats.

What hospital r u in? I'm at UCH in Tampa and the wifi network is really slow!
I'm a research volunteer at a hospital in Boston, and wi-fi is totally banned in the hospital due to security concerns. You can't even set up a department wi-fi.

Have now to be here all weekend as I need to have an ultrasound of my stomach to see if I have a rupture that may be causing an infection, have been treated by IV antibiotics since Wednesday for pneumonia and I must admit this iPad has been only out of my hands during sleep cycles... My own and it's...
It is my thought that Finnish doctors do not actually do any work at the weekends which is why I have to wait until Monday for my ultrasound.
My thoughts also go the fact that why oh why do they bring nutters into your room at 1am who swear shout And generally throw things until security come along bind them and take them away to some special place.
Anyway gonna get back to my iPad am now reading superman batman in comic zeal and Richard dawkins god delusion in good reader.
