Hi this is my first post on the forum ( i think), but I have been around here for years, I wanted to share with you this story.

I´m from mexico, I have been waiting the iPad since the day it was announced for the US, I was hopping that it would be the same launch day for Mexico but no, it wasnt, at least I wanted to be on the second countries roundup, but no!! I don´t understand why if we are neighbors and a lot of people have apple products in Mexico, well I will tell you the summary,

1. Since Mexico wasn't one of the chosen countries for launching iPad at least on the second round and I wanted it really much, I had to buy it in an eBay like site called mercadolibre, where I got ripped off like 900 dollars for the 32 gb version, and never received it, neither my money back, and I know a lot of other people that went on to that trap. I felt so bad.

2. My aunt went to Us and the iPads where sold out!

3. Then I thought well Ill wait until July, since I don´t have other option, now is July and the web page still says coming on july!! they haven't even put a day or preorders or something, I mean by the end of July iPad will be old, and a new one will be on its way.

4. the same story for the iPhone, and illegal sales of those products are very high as rip-offs, on the news a guy ripped off 100 hundred people by making them thought they have bought an iPhone 4, he got like $100,000 dollars.

5. I went to the apple retail store of mexico (imitation) iShop and the "genius" don´t know wither the launch date of the ipad.

sorry if its long but i wanted to share this :S, Im really disappointed on how apple treats us.

SORRY FOR MY ENGLISH IF ITS BAD

Well you wrote:

The iPad won't be old in July. The iPad will likely be on this first version for at least 12 months ...

Sorry you got ripped off but if you paid via PayPal you should be able to get your money back. As for feeling like Apple is mistreating you, there are other countries without the iPad you know?

Patience or eBay is the way to go, unfortunately.

Yea you should be able to get your money back if you payed with pay pal.

I din´t pay with paypal since mercadolibre doesn´t uses paypal it uses a different system, its not like eBay, i paid by bank deposit, its not like eBay, I could have bought it bye eBay but they were like double the price.

I know that other countries haven´t received the iPad either, but Mexico its just bellow US, if Apple launched the iPad in Europe y not in Mexico?

And by old i mean that apple release updated products about each year, so now that the ipad is 4 month old, the most probable thing is that in 8 month apple will release the new iPad.

I. Am sorry my friend you had a hard time if you want one I will be glad to buy one and send it to you, via paypal, if you want

Listen, we all gotta learn somehow. Your English is pretty good so I'm sure you'll understand this when I say this, any doubts PM me and we can talk in Spanish.

First of all, it doesn't matter that we share the border, that's no indication for product launches. The iPad has 3G in some models so they have to coordinate the launches with whatever carrier for each specific country. Also, the WiFi only models just flew by extremely quickly. Imaging having a worldwide launch? Chaos. Anyways, regardless of that, the borders mean nothing, if anything market strength has more value when deciding where to launch products, which is why you see that we, Mexico, is not on the first few launches, blame us the citizens for the ·$%·%$w country we have and how we do nothing to change it… but I digress. Point is, iPad comes later, sorry but that's how it goes. Expect the data plans from Telcel to be just ridiculously expensive too.

Back to your main points,
1) You have to know where you buy things and how you buy them. Mercadolibre for the most part is legit but there are TONS of people just out there to rip people off. You know it, you're Mexican, you know how it is here. Also, this seller probably had only a few, if he had any, and I'm sure he was gladly taking money.

Since you deposited the money, there's probably a small chance that you can get it back, however, go to mercadolibre.com.mx and check the fraud page or something like that, put up a complaint, see if the seller still has his profile open, drop him a message, tell him you deposited the money, etc. If you did all of this and are still out of luck, sorry my friend, live and lean. Thank God then that it was just $900 dollars and not much more. But like I say, fight for it until you can't do anything else.

2) Even today some stores are absolutely sold out. Sorry, nothing to do there. Wait a bit longer and if you know someone going to the US ask them nicely if they can get one for you, just make sure it's someone you absolutely 100% trust.

3) There won't be a new model likely for the rest of the year and then some. If the iPad is just launching on some countries, do you think they would refresh the model that quickly? They can't even keep up with the orders they already have. Don't worry about new models, none are coming in the next few months. Also, if you hold back on buying anything because a new one is coming up, you'll never a)buy anything, and b)enjoy anything.

4) See above. Want to change this? Vote smart next time. Start small by not bribing cops, throw garbage in its proper place, etc., and slowly but surely we will build a better Mexico. Until then, yeah, smart up. Lots of people were ripped off at the Mexico City airport before going to the World Cup because the "tickets never came out". So yeah this is the country you live in, smart up.

5) That's not really their fault. Even real store employees have a hard time figuring out stuff like that, so don't hold it against them. Just wait, it will come out soon.

Finally, and don't take this the wrong way, but you sound very immature and young. Please DO NOT get scammed again. If you did, do the most you can to at least report the crime, to the website, bank, police, etc. You seem like a naive person, and that and living in Mexico do not mix up well. Don't waste your money anymore on things that sound too good to be true. Even paying $900 dollars for the 32 gb version was obviously a scam since the guy was making a few hundred of his own. You buying it only encourages these types of people and allows them to go on. Next time don't be surprise when a drug cartels kills people in the city. The crime in Mexico, in most of its forms, it's based on the criminal organization of the groups that control different regions, ie. cartels, so please I beg you, DO NOT fall for this again. Be smarter than this.

There, end of rant.

Again sorry you got ripped off, but you should have known better. Live and learn my friend, live and learn.

I live in US and I pre-ordered my ipad a week ago. Mine won't ship until mid-July.
New ipad will not ship until late next year. I wouldn't worry about getting outdated so soon. By this rate, apple has a long way to go before they launch ipads on other countries.

Maybe they dont see alot of profitability in launching it on the first/second round in mexico? you could be waiting a while.

..

that's why I always ask for a cellphone to contact when I'm buying off mercadolibre.

just hang in there people in the us have to wait almost half a month to get their ipads so hopefully you will be able to get it if you wait in line or pre-order

I'm from monterrey where are you from?

I'm also waiting for a little info from apple méxico so as soon as you know something please post it here :D

thank you everyone for your advice, specially wesrk, I totally agree with you and yes I´m young (not too much), an I got too confident before I got scammed, before that incident I have always bought at mercadolibre and never had a problem, but now on I will be much more cautious, the seller had 3 different phone numbers and she turned down all, and she also had good repo, the good thing is that at least I got back $100 dollars back, because I didn´t want to go to the police, etc, but I told mercadolibre, you also know how corrupt everything is so it was a relatively cheap price for a big lesson.... an hopefully I will never be ripped off again.

anyways I don´t have other option besides waiting for it to launch here, and its already July so if I have waited 3 months, a couple of weeks more is not that much.

Thanks very much for taking your time to answer, I really apreciate it.

And Joseluis.17 if I know something I tell you, I´m from Morelia by the way..! :D

:(

you should appeal to paypal and ebay..
let me know if you want to buy one.
I will send it to you amigo

And it works the other way...

Background: Married to Mexican woman and living in US, been to Mexico dozens of times, etc.

A brother-in-law in Mexico City, computer guy, star trek nerd, used to buy from Amazon. Many shipments disappeared which he would report to Amazon and they had to refund his money (he's honest, not a scam). Yeah, someone in the shipping company was stealing packages, don't know what company Amazon uses. Anyway after a while Amazon closed his account and wouldn't let him buy anymore, too many claims.

There are plenty of scammers in US too, gotta use some sense. Just today in these forums I saw a guy who sold his old iPhone 3g for cash to a buyer for a fixed price...when the guy showed up he demanded less and the seller would not stick to the price, sold it for less, then cried on the forums.

At the very least it's a $900 USD lesson in human behavior.

ten cuidado,
buggsy2

Sorry to hear your sad story.

I got ripped off once when I was young and paid by cheque for mail order. Never again. Always use a credit card so you are protected, or if you cannot get one, have a friend or relative order using theirs.

Don't worry about the ipad being outdated. Around November time there will be a new release of the operating software, which will make it seem like iPad 2, and Apple will not replace this first generation iPad for some time - they haven't launched in half the world, and can't supply enough where they have.

Until there are rivals that come close, there is no incentive for Apple to bring out a newer version.

I'd be more worried about living in Mexico than not being able to get an ipad. I don't blame Apple, most Mexicans can't afford an ipad and sales would lag compared to more civilized countries.

It won't sell as much as in the U.S. for sure, but still, it will sell very well for the Mexican market, just like the iPhone does now. I say the reason it won't probably sell as well compared to other countries, besides the poverty line and how many live under it, is the fact that we're not as tech savvy as other countries (U.S., Canada, most in Europe for example). Still though, it will sell well for what its expected of the Mexican market.

And civilized? I'm pretty sure we are. I mean, I'm here and I'm Mexican so I must be civilized, I know how to type, I can speak at least one foreign language, so in those terms we are civilized. Crime and the such? Yeah that's not so good, but still, don't generalize, that's never good.

Also, let those of us that actually live in Mexico worry about living here ;)

Sorry to hear you got ripped off. That is awful. $900 is a lot of money.

wesrk: (I didn't quote your big text to make my post shorter)

I really thing that everything you have said is totally true and I believe that to make Mexico a country worthy of not only having Apple launch here but it being a better country we must all do our stuff. Anyway, talking about Mexico's problems is a huge topic of discussion so let's focus on what happened to the guy who posted this thread.

I was desperate to, I went to a place were they sell imported stuff (those who live in Mexico City would know it is called Pericoapa) and I went to one of the stands and I gave him half the price in advance. Everything got complicated and in the end I wanted my money back because he raised the price we had agreed from like 750 dollars to 960 dollars. I was scared that I wouldn't be able to get my money back because he kept saying come and pick our money up next week, I finally got it and almost ran from there.
I'm sorry to hear that you got scammed but you are not alone and people must learn from their mistakes, I learnt from mine even if it wasn't as punishing as your was. The only thing that I believe is the best thing to do is wait for Apple to decide when July arrives for the extra nine countries they said they would release in.

Yup. Lots of people were just taking advantage of people. I mean, c'mon, Monterrey is under water and oxxo is selling water jugs for $130 pesos!!

Getting back to the point though, I still say, $900 dollars at a young age (and no offense to the original poster but it sounds like he is not strapped for cash), is a small amount to pay to realize how the world truly works over here.

For future reference, just wait, it's better to wait a couple months. Your life is not worth an iPad. It's not worth going to those places that are literally crawling with criminals.

Not just Mexico ~
I'm in New Zealand & also waiting for a date in July along with all the others on the 2nd list of Nine Countries for the iPad release:

Austria, Belgium, Hong Kong, Ireland, Luxembourg, Mexico, Netherlands, New Zealand, and Singapore.

"Give us a damn date" :apple:

Ditto. I love how the iPhone 4 is already featured in the NZ Apple store, but there's still no trace of a release date for the iPad.

Good news man!!!

Apple today announced that iPad will be available in Austria, Belgium, Hong Kong, Ireland, Luxembourg, Mexico, Netherlands, New Zealand and Singapore this Friday, July 23.

Good news man!!!

Yup, and pricing begins just below $7,500, tax included (around $575 USD) so not really that high from the US price when you take into account the tax of 16% in Mexico.

In fact, if it's really $7,500 with tax included, this means that the base price was the $500 USD and they just added the 16% tax. As far as I know it will include the tax since all prices are shown like that. Anyone care to expand on this idea?

The pricing is really good, 7,499$ as a number is pretty ok, i mean in mexico it's quite a lot anyways but it doesn't feel that dramatic (I live there)

Now i will face a hard time thinking about buying it or now, but at least i will be able to play with it!
