One quick question for those that have imported an iPad from the US. It comes with a mains plug - but presumably with a US plug. How have you gotten around this?

Chris

It's simple, the US plug pulls off an you replace it with a UK plug from an iPhone or similar adapter.

Hi,

Now that the delay is for a month- i'm seriously thinking of getting one.

Looking at previous questions about access to the Itunes store- I already have an account. so i signed out and tried to set up a new one, but by default the country was set to the UK.
Therefore what is the best way to set up a new itunes american account?

I had a friend in the USA set up an iTS account with Paypal as the payment method (he did have to have an American-based credit card active at the PayPal account to register it with Apple), and I just send his PayPal account money before I make a purchase.

Of course, there has to be a level of trust there, but he is a great friend of many years.

Just to confirm:

Theres some UK Ipad apps on the store already, if i purchase them..hook up my US Ipad to my mac..i can download them to it no problem, making the US ipad into a UK one?

The actual 'app store' on the ipad however, will state the store isn't availible in my country though, correct?

Thanks for the PM's.

The real issue for me is that I have a UK itunes account set up. If I then log out and try and set up a US account, it automatically puts my country as United Kingdom- is there a way to change this? Or do i need another computer to set up a US account?

To those not getting verification emails -

I had this issue, thought it was an apple trick, it's not it's a "bug"

set up your account as usual (using the NONE option with free apps, or with gift cards)
then when it says "verification email sent"

head to apple.com
go to the store tab
on the top right click "account"
on the right it says "change account information"
sign in using the new US account you created in itunes
change some details (like change your password or something)
click apply changes

go to itunes and click sign in, now try signing in with your new US itunes acc, it will say not verified.
click "re-send verification email"

you'll then get the email in a few seconds.

I hope this helps, I found this after 3 days of waiting for an email and a LOT of googling :D

You can not make a US account without a us credit card and billing address anymore, I've tried several times and had it confirmed by numerous aple employees.

If you can, will somebody please explain to me how you do without being asked for one? I've tried the gift card thing, but it still asks for a credit card and gives no option not to give on...

Very simple Dave,

Create a new email address that you want to associate with the iTunes account. Pick any zip code that you want. Anyone will do. Try New York or you can use mine even (08820). The code has to be valid. That's all you need. I am an American living abroad, but I have friends that I purchase (gift shows, music, apps, etc...) but to be able for them to redeem them from the US iTunes store, they need a US account. The method above shows how to make this happen.

Ive got a friend going to states on friday (new York), She's willing to go into a store and get me one - as long as i pay ;-) Can i ask can you summarise what are the issues?
Will she get stung on bringing it back re customs? its so long since ive bought anything abroad i cant remember - if she pays the sales tax in ny is it still eligible for vat on entry? or will she have to pretend its hers/hide it???
I understand i can swap the plug - i have a spare so i can charge it - however
will it be covered under apple warranty?
is it locked to the US store for ever? - this is probably a deal breaker for me - while i dont mind fiddling around for a while - the thought of forever having to log into 2 stores is a pain. (for me) or can i just sync it with my Macs iTunes and when they come out in this country (england) use it as a Uk one?
thanks for the help

Tell her to ditch the packaging.

She'll have to pay duty or she won't.

It isn't locked to anything.

It's covered worldwide by warranty.

Easy.

Tell her to open the box, and turn it on. It is now used. No customs as it is no longer a new device. The warranty is valid but considering it is not avail in your country, pray that it does not break for a few months. You can call Apple to verify but I think you should be okay as long as you have the receipt. Once out in the UK, you can ditch the other iTunes account.

Hey guys I have just ordered a US iPad and live in the UK. I understand that I can use my iphone charger to charge my ipad, Am I right in thinking I can plug in the ipad dock into the iphone charger and plug in my US iPad?

Basically is there anything I can do that would fry my US iPad? Taking all precautions now!

You want to use the charger that comes with the iPad as it supplies a higher output insuring a faster charge. I am charging with either my MBP, my iPhone charger or the iPad charger. The iPad charger is smart in that it knows how to regulate the charge depending on the device. You are safe dude. No worries.

Ok. Thats cool. There are iPad apps already on the UK store - so i could just link it to that and buy those?

sounds like she is spending her time in an apple store - presumably there are no shortages over there?? ie there are in stock?

No it's not a good idea to just pick any state, it's best to use one like Oregon where the sales tax is 0.0%.

Good point Elise. I was not thinking of the tax issue but you bring up a good point.

I found out the hard way, I got my account all set up and I was happy, but it was only after the event that I learned that the state I picked (Florida) is subject to sales tax so I set up a new account pretty damn quick! :D

Check the US stores. They are out of stock it seems. You might have to wait. Apple just delayed the European launch a month due to high US demand. I purchased a 16 gig wifi just to play with until Apple releases the 3G versions. I pre-ordered my 16 gig wifi, and had someone go in and get it for me. You might want to try this. See if you can reserve one for pickup. This way you will get one for sure.

As an aside to the discussion. Apple lied about the performance issues. BUT in a great way.

I left my MBP off at work and used only the iPad connected via wifi to my Nokia phone (www.joikuspot.com for a great application that turns your phone into an access point). After a full work day, and continued usage, my iPad finally turned off after 14 hours and 8 minutes.

Frigging insane. Apple seems to have gotten this right.

I haven't heard of big urban stores being out of stock.

Mine was bought in San Francisco on the MONDAY after the launch. They had stock all along.

Impossible to say. As a Manhattan resident, stores here have been going in and out of stock. It does seem that Apple is keen to keep its Manhattan stores stocked so when a store runs out, it is quickly replenished, often overnight. Remember New York has four Apple stores so if your friend goes to one that does not have the model she is seeking for, have her ask the sales clerk to check another store and perhaps even call and reserve one for her.

Thanks good advice. I might be pushing it though - she is mainly clothes shopping with her daughter and I think its more a case of if they see an apple store she will go in - i'm slightly helped by the fact her husband would like one too but he isnt as desperate.
