Yes, your situation does seem rather similar and I appreciate the advice very much, you seem to be exactly the person I was hoping would reply to this =)
I see what you mean about the MBP being useful in certain situation but a 17" being overkill
so do you think an iMac, iPad, 13" MBP would be a good combination?
I want the pro instead of the regular MB because for just a few hundred more it looks nicer and has better specs, seems to be worth it... maybe not though
thoughts?

The 13" MBP is a very nice machine, my brother has one and i am very envious! I would say the decision between the MB and 13" MBP is purely financial so if your happy to pay the extra for the MBP then go for that! :)

Well maybe a little. it wouldn't be needed. If i could i would swap my MBP with a 13" model. You have got to think of the weight too, the 13" ones are nice and light. If you want a 15" then get one but i know if i was in your shoes then i wouldn't.

Yeah, I figured as much
and the weight is a good point
since I don't think I would really be using it THAT much, the 13" would probably be my best bet
I will probably end up getting the iPad and a 13" MBP

I was kinda in the same situation. I had a 17" Macbook Pro. At the time I bought it I figured it would be good at home and when I want to do work away from my desk. I had a 24" LCD plugged into it too. The truth is I never did work away from my desk and I never used it as laptop. So when I was looking at my options, I realized I could sell my mbp and get a better spec'd iMac for cheaper. So I sold it and got the iMac and iPad. Just ask yourself what it is you actually do away from your desk that you think you can't do on a regular laptop. More than likely you don't do anymore than just some browsing and emails. The iPad is perfect for that. All those things you "think you'll do" that you can't do on a regular laptop, you probably won't do. So keep your iMac and get an iPad. The mbp will be a waste of money.

That makes no sense. Why would you get both a 13" mbp and an iPad? The mbp cancels out the iPad because it can do everything the iPad can and more. Given that you already have a 27" iMac, why have 2 more computers? Use the iMac as your workhorse and ipad for everything else.

It depends on what you need from your mobile computer. For your serious writing, you might survive with an iPad and a real keyboard, but with just the touch screen and thebPages app it should be enough to take notes in class. The battery life of the iPad is great for this, it just blows me away. You are restricted to the not small app store, so you should be able to get most anything you need, but for your serious computing your going to want a Macbook Pro if you want on the go serious computing.
So, for quick notes and carrying all of your books with you (the ereader is great, and you can carry lots of research books with you), the iPad is great. If you opt for a Macbook Pro, don't ignore the ipad. It's still great for on the go computing and entertainment. It's really amazing web browsing and entertainment device, as well as a PDA.

For the reason i explained earlier in the thread, for the times when the iMac is not available (weekend away for example) or when he has to demonstrate something to a tutor.

I'm wondering the same thing as the OP, except... I'm about to graduate law school..

I bought my MBP in the summer of 07 and its been PERFECT ever since. I use it at home, at school, and anywhere I need. It does everything I need. I only play 1 game and its the latest Command and Conquer when its out (can't do on iPad). I've been wanting an iPad REALLY bad, but do I need it..? NO.

I'm trying to justify getting it so bad! I could leave my MBP at home (treat it like a desktop) and bring my iPad with me everywhere, but what if I need to switch to Windows for that 1 program that doesn't run on Macs (there are some school apps that don't yet work on Mac), or what if you use a school site ("Blackboard" or some other site) that requires Flash? The iPad doesn't support flash and you wouldn't be able to go to those sites. Those are the real downsides... Plus, I have an iPhone... The only difference I see between my iPhone and the iPad is the ability to take notes and use an external keyboard if I want. Everything else my iPhone (or iPod touch) will do.....

I'm 50/50 on getting it... Hope that insight helped...
