What is missing is Java, Flash, VirtualBox, and VMWare.

Ipads have flash... They have for a while now. As for the others... I have no clue lol I've never found that I needed them enough to actually look them up. Even without flash the iPad is still uncomparable.

iPads do not run Flash natively so in essence there is no Flash. You are wrong.

Hmmm except I've had flash on my ipad for over a month.... So no, I'm not wrong lol

iPads don't 'natively' have any games on them... You have to download them, just like I downloaded flash. So ya they have flash :D

Ok for the sake of being pedantic where exactly in the App Store did you download it?

Touché hahahaha ok so it's not exactly app store accepted, but if it's available you'd be a fool not to take advantage of it! At the end of the day flash works on my ipad... How bout yours?

My iPad is not jail broken so it does not support Flash.

Ok and that's your choice, I respect that, but to say I'm wrong about flash being available on ipads is incorrect. There's a lot of awesome features apple doesn't want it's user using, mostly because they lose money. I figure if I pay $800 for something I should be able to use it to it's full potential... Maybe I'm crazy for wanting the best of both worlds lol

Fair enough. You are correct that Flash will run in your jailbroken iPad. However for the rest of us that have not jail broken our iPads Flash is not possible. The thing is, Adobe had YEARS to get Flash working on mobile devices and it still sucks for the most part. Apple offered to fix Flash for Adobe but they were turned down, so now Adobe has to deal with it. My Nokia supposedly runs Flash but it is utter crap. Drains the battery, heats up the phone because the proc is running full blast and still it is simply not ready from prime time. Apple too the right approach for the moment.

I 100% agree with you. I think with out apple support flash may die... I know that seems like a leap but if your not willing to change with the times, then you'll be left behind. I also agree that no one needs flash on their device, apple seems to be doing just fine without it. It just seems that most iHaters use the fact that flash isn't supported as their main argument... I just wanted to show that ipads are capable of running flash but ya Id still love my iPad without flash :)

Another very interesting fact, although I can't prove but have experienced, when I first got flash my battery time was cut in half so I deleted it... I got my battery life back and for some reason unknown to me flash still works...

Seeing as Apple have only around a 6% market share of computers sold around the world, perhaps the lack of great support from that 6% is something Flash can live with ;)

Erm... those 6% computers, AKA Mac do support flash.
What Flash can't afford is to be totally missing out of the mobile internet. Apple's iStuff officially don't support it. Other platforms theoretically support Flash but at a sub-par level of performance.
Flash is just unfit for usage on mobile devices that have constraints Re. battery life because it's CPU intensive, independently of the platform.

Actually the computer world has very little to do flash and it's success. I know people don't like to admit this but whatever the porn industry backs is the one that gets on top... For the last decade or so that happened to be flash. But with all the new smart phones and iProducts, the porn industry is making the move to support those devices.... Again flash is being left in the dust. I don't care how many products or whatever income flash is getting... With out the porn industry behind them they don't stand a chance. Silly little piggie

And mitchrapp Im not 100% sure on that... I have flash or ya frash, but it's rarely used since apple has done such a good job of creating an environment that doesn't need it... Somethhing I'm sure more and more companies are slowing realizing

Oh! You will respond to this one. You are just making an assumption that playbook or samsung tab has a better selection. Please!! Look at the android market, it has mostly crap. Curated markets have far better apps than an open, uncurated market.

Sigh.

This is not about Android, Tab or Playbook. I know of the app selection there.

Also i dont think because a app store has a large quantity of app makes it automatically better then the app store with few apps.

Just to repeat what someone said earlier, what would you personally think is missing from the App Store?

Frankly I've been pleasently surprised at just how quickly high quality software has been delivered. Sure, the lack of universal apps for a lot of high profile titles is a pain but we've seen a selection of good to great games (and some major brands from big publishers to boot) that puts most dedicated gaming platforms first six months to shame. We've seen a wide range of productivity software, some excellent apps like Flipbook that really do something different that suits the hardware, a lot of really well done apps for common tasks like twitter etc etc etc. I'm really struggling to think of any major ommissions at this point and am kinda curious to see what people think is missing rather than the generic 'there's a lack of apps' complaint.

I've only had my iPad for a few days, but in those few days I've been able to get it setup exactly how I want it (I'll be using it mainly for productivity / business use). The main productivity apps I've installed are the 3 iWork apps for document creation, SharePlus for easy integration with our SharePoint system, Winadmin for remote desktop access, TaskTaskHD for task management, Evernote for Note taking and Note Taker HD for handwritten notes.
These apps allow me to work away from my desk and pretty much replace 95% of what I used to carry a laptop around for. It's true there aren't as many apps for the iPad as the iPhone, nor are there anywhere near as many free ones, but there are plenty of choices out there.
I researched what was available before I got my iPad because I wanted to make sure it would be able to do what I wanted it to and was actually pleasantly surprised by the number of iPad specific apps available

You could go on and on about what is missing if you compared it to the iPhone offering depending on what genre you are interested. So, it's really not about anything specific, its about the overall offering as a whole, and how often applications get added on a weekly basis. How do you know what's missing if its never offered in the first place?

I am surprised that someone is disappointed with iPad's app selections. iPad is not even out for more than 5-6 months and it has over 25000 apps already. iPhone and iPod have been out for years and years. It takes time to develop apps. Wait until you see samsung Tab or blackberry playbook... See how many apps they will have. Maybe you should just wait longer.

Most of those 25000 applications are complete and utter garbage. Some of these developers just want to release an awful application as many times as they possibly can. I would honestly say about half of the applications are filled with dumb duplicates of better applications or just plain awful applications.

Basing how good the Apple App store is off numbers is ridiculous.

I have the iPad for a week now and most of the apps I got are identical to the iPhone version. The only two outstanding apps for me is FlipBoard and Twitter for iPad. Both of these apps utilize the large iPad touchscreen and make the apps truly unique and useful.

Hell, it's painful to use Skype or Facebook on iPad... I just wish there are a lot more apps like Flipboard and Twitter.

Could you elaborate on exactly you want?

In the hope that I've missed something that is really out there or that a developer is looking for ideas, I'll elaborate:

  • a replacement for TweetDeck for the iPad that permits Facebook & Twitter monitoring and sending in one app (TweetDeck for the iPad is so buggy that it is useless and has no Facebook functionality)
  • a replacement for Quicken that has most of the Quicken functionality (as noted elsewhere Mint doesn't have it)

If I've missed something available, please let me know.

Jim

That reply wasn't towards you but very well. Unless you are the same person using two handles.

I never really cared for apps on the iPad. I'd say 75% of the time I'm using Safari. The web experience is just so good that it is enough for me. The other 25% would be for iBooks/Kindle/Zinio.

Well, as a developer, it's much more tempting to write apps for the iPhone, iPod Touch. The market is an order of magnitude bigger.

That said, I love writing apps for the iPad. The big screen lets me do a lot of cool stuff. I'm working on a new app with a lot of gestures in it that would be impossible to do on a small screen.

Really though, a lot of the iPhone apps, are just small programs that provide hand-held interfaces to a website. With the iPad you don't need them anymore -- the website itself is good enough. (given the iPads big screen)

I think Apps like Flipboard, and the new Twitter app are good examples of what the iPad is capable of doing. I'm sure we'll see more apps like those coming in the future. Especially with iOS 4.2 just around the corner.

The largest software company in the world to jump in with both feet.

There have been grumblings about it happening soon maybe, but what is missing is Microsoft.

Give me MS Office, iPad Edition please.

Lol, native Visio on my iPad? Backflips....all the way down the hallway. I'll even do a little break dance if they want.

+1

Now that would be impressive.
