I had the same fear. Finally, I bought one a couple weeks ago. First couple days I poured over these pages (with my return receipt in hand) looking for a hint of new launch. After those few days, I got familiar with my iPad and am stunned at how valuable it is to me.

Now there is no way I can justify waiting 4-6 months. My only regret is not buying it sooner!

same here, I figure I can always give it to my wife and get the new one if I really need it :D

buy the 16GB wifi version to hold you over till April, then sell it to a highschooler (who wants the new one but can't talk mommy into buying one) for $300 and put it towards the 2G iPad.

This is what I'm doing tomorrow!! I can't wait any longer!!

Bought my 32GB 3G on Tuesday, didn't want to wait 6 months for the 2nd Gen. Don't regret it one bit, the battery has really stood out for me. Random use throughout the work day that would put my iPhone 3G into the red zone doesn't even knock 30% off the iPad - over an 8 hour day. I then went on to use it heavily in the evening and didn't break 50%. Was off the charge at midnight the night before and 23 hours later it was still sitting over 50%. Worth it for the battery life alone.

Yeah I was in the waiting camp up until a few days ago, when I caved and bought the base model iPad. I love it. I swore that I was going to wait for the new version, but I wanted to enjoy the device now after playing with one for more than a few minutes.

IMO, its worth spending for the device now and selling for a small loss just to have the experience of the device. It's so much fun to use!

I bought an iPad about 3 weeks ago after swearing for months I wasn't gonna touch one until at least Gen 2.

Famous last words!

In any event, I'm not kicking myself for not buying it earlier as the excellent app support is now part of the whole experience that probably wasn't the same even a few short months ago. Pretty sure any production bugs have been ironed out by now as well too so mine's working perfectly so far.

If you need it, buy it. Apple's used equipment market is surprisingly robust so you'll be able to flip it and buy the new one without taking too bad of a hit compared to other manufacturers. In my case, my wife is starting to look a little too longingly at my iPad so she'll probably inherit this one early next year and I'll grab the new model if it suits my purposes. (ie. if they don't mess anything up with the new model...)

My predictions for Gen 2 iPad?

- 512mb memory for sure to match iPhone 4 (100%)
- Bottom AND side dock connectors for vertical or horizontal docked keyboard support (100%)
- Gyroscope to match iPhone 4 (100%)
- Front facing camera for Facetime and vid con (100%)
- Rear Facing camera (50%+) (and don't laugh, this WOULD be useful even if only for scanner app support for scanning documents, business cards, barcodes, etc.)
- Doubling of flash memory to 32GB, 64GB, 128GB (75%+)
- Two sizes, 10" and 7" versions with varying capabilities (75%+) (Apple really wants to keep this tablet market and they will have to offer both sizes to keep competitors at bay and to hit price points)
- integrated SD card slot (50% or less)
- USB connector (50% but this is a tricky one as they are already taking govt heat in the EU for proprietary connectors on devices and not providing universal USB support)
- Higher resolution display? Can't say on this as it will depend on cost, quality and if they don't have to give anything up to do it. A pixel doubled display will require some serious graphics horsepower which means power, heat and shorter battery life. If they can overcome these obstacles then I'll give this one 50% or more. Screen tech is constantly changing though so this will come sooner or later.

The other issue is they have to keep coming out with new better faster Gee Whiz iPads so from a marketing perspective, what do you add now and what do you save for Gen 3, 4, etc. to keep the sales going? Hmmmm.....

Cheers!

James

I just can't ever see Apple releasing two sizes for the iPad. For one, what would happen with the price? If they are to have two distinct sizes, presumably the 7 incher will be significantly less than the 9.7 inch model. Then, the problem is the price encroaches on the iPod touch, which is obviously much smaller but just scraping the 400 dollar mark.

Apple doesn't like to cause confusion with their products. While obviously from a consumer point of view if you think a 7 inch is better for you then that is what you would want. However, from Apple's side of things, it doesn't make sense to differentiate their product line like that. Also, the problem becomes developers have to create apps for yet another screen size, which sort of dilutes the strength of the brand.

They've been developing the iPad for years now. It would be odd if they switched to 7 inches on such a whim due to the presence of still unreleased gadgets from other companies with no success to speak of, especially when the 9.7 inch model has been incredibly successful.

I just don't see it happening.

They could come out with a 7" and call it an i something else.

Let's face it. The touch is a mini tablet. Archos has one coming out that size so a the touch could be the mini, the 7" their middle one and the 9.7" their larger tablet.

Of course they would have to adjust pricing some what. Maybe the 7" in 8GB and 16GB. The choice comes down to screen size or storage.

I don't think they should do away with the 9.7" though and Apple probably won't come out with a 7" but I think the 9.7" would be suited for media consumption at home or traveling instead of a notebook, 7" for the person on the go like a salesman going from stop to stop or business traveler and the touch well it has it's place already.

The 7" in this Tab video is how I see it being used minus sticking it in my back pocket. To me that's more portable friendly, it's even the size of the tricoder on Star Trek :)

First post :D

I thought it was an overblown iPod touch and seeming I already have an iPhone 3GS AND a 7" Windows Tablet UMPC, I thought I would skip the iPad 1st gen.

However, there are a few things I cannot do well on my resistive single touch UMPC such as read PDF files easily, and of course the battery on that thing only lasts 2 hours with a slow Atom processor. Plus it is definitely still 6 months until the next one which is a pretty long time to wait seeming mine will still be worth 70% in April.

What sealed the deal for me was the features of iOS 4.2, multi-tasking as well as a foolproof jailbreak is what I was really waiting for and now that it is nearly here, I pulled the trigger and got a cheap iPad 64GB 3G on eBay.

Now I can travel with the best of both worlds, the world's best tablet device, plus my UMPC which has physical keyboard, webcam, USB ports, iTunes, Onenote, Chrome and Firefox, uTorrent, etc, etc

My precious will be here in 24 hours!

I would wait until they come out with the next gen, but if you can find an ipad on local craigslist for like $400-$450 then why not buy that one and play with it until the next gen comes out? Might get lucky and sell it for the same as you got it

I've been reading a lot about next gen iPads as I have a first gen iPad and am debating a new MBA or the 2nd gen iPad. None of the expected features of the 2nd gen iPad originally appealed to me other than the front facing camera for FaceTime (which the MBA would obviously do as well). However, seeing what people think is coming, the one that now is really glaring at me is the extra RAM. The reason is multitasking. If I were debating buying or waiting I would wait for reviews of 4.2 on the iPad to come in. It is expected to be released in November. If performance is still good on the original iPad with 4.0 then I would say buy a first gen unless you need the front facing camera. The screen on the iPad is awesome and I don't even think they will change the screen for the 2G.

BTW, has anybody heard developers' thoughts on the iPad with 4.2 and if it slows everything down? I know the iPhone 3G really sucked once it went to 4.0. Not sure about the 3GS which is probably the best iPad comparison device.

If I didn't have one now I'd wait for the new one.

Since I do have one, my plan has been to sell it in Jan., go iPad-less for a few months and then purchase the new one...

But seeing as my mom has been wanting her own iPad, I may just give it to her and purchase the new one for myself on my own...

But it needs to have FaceTime and be lighter.
