iPad market research

I would be interested in the summary statement from Mr. Jobs addressing the market niche they believe will make the iPad profitable. Perhaps it is more of a commercial use than retail (see discussion about textbooks above).

One battle that all "device" manufacturers are always fighting is weight/size vs. utility.

I think the iPhone is so popular (enough to get people to pay a cancellation fee with Verizon to switch to AT&T as a friend of mine did) because it has capitalized on both sides of the battle aforementioned.

The iPad appears to err on the side of size. There comes a point where people may want the extra functionality of a lap-top if they cannot "pocket" their device. Yeah, many laptops do not have 3G functionality with a cell provider, but they can get a card for that.

I think that the macbook air and the iPad are more in competition now than any other Apple devices.

May the battle continue....

In all fairness I think the air is doomed. It's probably the slowest selling of all the Macs.

Price, size... it is a different target
Options are good
Not everyone wants an iPad
Not everyone wants an iPod Touch

That is true but if i had to pick one i would go for the ipad. I have a touch and iphone. But i could not see myself buying a new touch.

And yet, there will be others who will buy a Touch instead of an iPad
Every individual makes choices to suit their own budget, lifestyle, expectations

yeah true, do u think apple will slack on the touch

The touch has always been taken directly from the iPhone. So unless you think they are going to stop improving the iPhone, I don't see why the touch would be an afterthought.

Face it...you don't get it. It's cool. Buy the iPad and ditch your Touch. Apple will continue to support both because they have a different target audience. Next thread..

You hit the nail on the head.

This iPad really gets people in the frenzy "I can't wait to get one" until you really realize what you bought.

I personally will prefer an iPhone to carry around; it fits in my pocket- it does everything the iPad can do and it also serves as a phone. Same deal with the iPod touch except the phone part.

Also, if I want to lug an extra device around (beside my iPhone or iPod touch), why would I go with a tablet that only does the SAME THINGS? If I really want the a big screen, I'll bring around my MacBook - which can video-iChat, do complex movie editing, listen to CDs, watch DVDs, rest comfortably in my lap while I type, and many more things.

1) I carry a netbook with me most places, but mostly for surfing, email, and occasional document editing. An iPad will be better for this, mainly because it's lighter, thinner, has better battery life, a nicer screen, and a more elegant interface (tiny keyboards and tiny touchpads suck).

I don't need a mobile computer for "advanced" things like video editing, and I don't use DVDs or CDs. I seldom use video chat (it would be NICE, but I can live without it). I personally find the form factor of a laptop uncomfortable and it makes me hunch over the keyboard and screen giving me upper back pain. A tablet design is more flexible and likely better in my case.

2) I carry my iPod touch with me everywhere for music, movies, and apps. The iPod touch is, frankly, a crappy music player. I have to take it out and turn the screen on to control it (although the newer touches support the headphone remote), so a nano would be better for just audio purposes. The iPad will be better for movies and, likely, apps.

So, for me, an iPad+nano is likely a better solution than the netbook+touch combo I have now. In my case, it kills the touch, but I don't think it will impact the overall market. I can see it reducing the overall sales of the touch a little, but I also think that anyone buying the iPad instead of a touch will end up with a nano, classic, or at least shuffle as well.

I've also been considering the possibility of using the iPad+nano combo, but the only problem is I now find the click-wheel interface clumsy to use. So I'm kinda hoping Apple will come out with a touch screen Nano. :D

a 5" ipad would kill the ipod touch since I probably could get that into my pocket. But 9" ipad would be kinda hard to fit in there so no.

I'm on the other end of the issue. I have a Touch and I like it for my music and apps. I would buy a larger model for better web browsing if it was available.
I have to look at the 64GB no flash iPad locked down to the Apps store against a 10 inch customizable flash playing multitasking netbook with a 64GB SSD for about the same money or less and would lean to the netbook and keeping my Touch till Fall and see what my choices are then.
The RDF has worn off for me and I am seeing it as just designed to take more money out of your pocket into the itunes/apps store.

I would say a 5x7 inch Touch would hurt the iPad. Those who say there is no overlap are just refusing to see the obvious. If it stays the way it is I don't know where new sales would come from. It needs a refresh badly as it is the sales stats say the major buyers of it are teenagers.
I think I would rather wait for a 5x7 inch Touch than settle for an iPad that is too big to carry comfortably in my pocket or coat.
Maybe Steve is planning on killing off the Touch since making it larger would cause too much overlap., I don't know and if I have to wait till Fall to find out that is that much longer I have to wait before I would get an iPad.

Nope - don't see it this way

Honda/Ford/Toyota/Chevy/etc...have different models that fit different needs of different consumers.

I'm sure Apple looks at this before making a product. The Macbook didn't kill the iMac. Different needs...

Well, this would sort of defeat what I want nano for personally. When I had a (1G) nano before the touch came out I could operate it without looking. The touchwheel might be clumsy compared to the touch screen for a PDA/internet device but it works well as a PMP control, imo. Being able to reach into your pocket and pause/play, skip, adjust the volume, etc without taking the device out is really nice for a music/audio player.

(I know you can do most/all of these things with remote headphones, but it's also nice to be able to do them without being restricted to headphones that have that feature).

I can imagine how cool I'll look at the gym with one of these bad boys strapped to my chest/back/big manly guns...

Ebay will surely start selling the IPAD armbands so that all those with the iphone armbands can upgrade!

I'm one of those who has an iphone but I use my ipod nano at the gym. It's in my pocket where it can't be seen.

Touch = RIP

Touch is history.

I agree about the Nano, I like the wheel controls on the Nano (very tactile) and as soon as they upgrade the Nano to 32G, I am ditching my Nano 3G "fattie" for the higher capacity model, hopefully with scroll wheel still intact and no "proprietary" headphone jack or other "improvements" that do nothing except restrict free choice of peripherals.
