Losing wifi

I have 2 ipads that have the same issue.

The problem mainly happens when bringing the device on from a "suspended" state I.e the device is on but the screen is black. When you click the home or power button to bring the device back on, sometimes you have wifi sometimes you don't. When you don't, it either gives you a message about passwords or that it couldn't connect. I do not have this problem EVER with me or my girlfriend's iPhone 3G &3gs.

I have tried the following resolutions and the results are only temporary fixes. 1. Resetting network settings on iPad
2. Retyping network password (be sure to save it as a note so you can copy and paste as you'll be doing this a lot.
3. Resetting fios router.
4. Restart iPad.

Again. These are only temporary fixes, the problems do come back.

I actually lost the wifi while writing this post. The wifi just dropped. It gave me an error message when I pressed the submit button. After the error a list of wifi networks popped up and I picked my network. It tried connecting and errored again. I hit ok then I was prompted to type in my password AGAIN. Luckily I have it remembered by now.

Frikking iPad. If apple says this is a router issue they are lying. This is an iPad issue. Hopefully a new firmware will be out soon.

Now mine will not access wifi, and the "bars" are showing full. Everything is correct under settings. Mine isn't a password thing, even though I had to retype it 4 times tonight. Now I can't get wifi at all, even though it shows I should be able to. I guess I will take this back.

I just noticed this thread was still active...

I managed to "fix" this by opening my wifi - no more password. However, my router will only accept connections from known devices. So there is some security there. My wifi doesn't really extend beyond my house much, so his isn't a huge risk for me. Anyway, it ended my troubles with dropped connections. I figure they'll probably fix this in an os upgrade at some point

You're sure you don't have some additional protection on your router? I had a similar problem, until I remembered I had to log into my router and enter my iPad as a known device... Buried in some advanced security menu.

Hmm, I thought It was just something on my end. Got my iPad today. Was browsing the net during commercial breaks. I went to use it and noticed no wifi. It tried to connect, failed, them ask for pass, failed. Fixed it by going to the iPad setting, turned off and on wifi, selected my wifi, entered password and finally worked. Good to know if this happens again that it is not me

This just started 30 min ago. I ended up unplugging router and restarting it. Now in addition to seeing the signal, it will finally use it. Like I said the bars were there and it should have been working. It wasn't a password issue, even though I did have to retype it when I restarted router for my Fios interest. it is a Westell 9100EM

It will happen again.

I had the exact same problem. Changing my router from WEP to WPA security fixed it.

Wouldn't know how to start to go about doing that. Verizon came in and hooked everything up.

Yep. I did the same last night. Used all day just fine. I will put the password back once I know this issue is fixed.

I have verizon too. They should have given you the ip address of your router... A bunch of digits like 123.456.1.2

Just type that into your browser URL bar. You'll also need to know your router login and password, which verizon should have told you.

Once you're logged into your router, it'll take a bit of poking around, as it depends on the router. But as said earlier, try changing from wep to wpa security... At least until apple fixes the issue, which I think will happen in an os update.

Thanks, I've saved this thread for reference, and will take a stab at it tomorrow. I live in an apt now, and don't want to lose any security though.

I think there may be different issues here, but what I found is that when the Ipad comes out of sleep (black screen) if the backlight is all the way down, I have to go back and re-choose my network in the wifi settings. Otherwise, with the back light up I don't have any problems, weird.

I have the same problem and spoke apple tech support. I was told that they have never heard of this issue. I will lose my connection several times a day and YES I HAVE rebooted my router and verified that I have the latest firmware. This is a iCrap problem.

Fixed for me

There was no router firmware upgrade for my Verizon FIOS ActionTec router, but I was able to resolve my connection issues by changing my wireless channel (on my router) from Automatic to channel 6.

Fixed the problem right away.

I do love this thing, but it seems every 30 minutes or so, I simply get dropped from my own wifi connection, and the iPad asks me for my password again.

On a couple occasions, I could not join my wifi network again. The only fix was to power down and back up. Anyone else have this problem? I do not have this issue with my iPod touch.

I have this issue with my iPhone quite often... touchwood not had this problem with iPad as of yet

A problem

This is definitely an issue, which hopefully will be resolved with new firmware. Hopefully Apple is aware, given the discussion forums too.

I have found that turning wifi off, home button, back to wifi on often gets it back going again. And, this is with the 3G iPad too with the WiFi issues. Tried turning off 3G at home with no better luck.

I still love my iPad! But, hope this is just an infancy product issue.

I am using WEP, so maybe I'll try changing all computers & iThings (argh, that's a lot) over to WPA like another poster recommended.

I had issues with my iPad forgetting the password or randomly disconnecting. but 3 weeks ago, i changed my verizon fios router settings from WEP to WPA and I haven't had issues since.

Our home wireless network is WEP protected and I have had no issues whatsoever with wifi connection or remembering passwords on my 64GB wifi/3G iPad. We have a Linksys WRT54G router. I wonder why some have issues and others are not? Best of luck to all those experiencing problems.

WiFi and Mac/Apple - unresolved issue for years

For the 6 years I have been using Mac's, there have been issues with wireless connectivity. Sometimes it seems better and sometimes worse. I am reasonably sure it is a WPA problem that causes the connection time out and the constant requirement to re-enter password. This does not seem to occur with Apple wireless routers but their range/power is so feeble, that they are pretty useless. I am sitting within line of sight of a Time Capsule about 15 meters away and only getting 2 to 3 bars on my MacBook Pro. The Netgear DG834PN about 25 meters away and 2 concrete + stone clad walls, is giving me 5 bars, when it can fire up past the WPA issue.

The second problem is sticky DNS and hangs. This may be made very slightly better by using the Open DNS IP addresses rather than accepting the ones obtained automatically from your ISP. Open DNS IP's - 208.67.222.222 and 208.67.220.220

The third issue is a mismatch between the DHCP (Dynamic Host Configuration Protocol) in your router, which assigns internal IP addresses to the various wired and wireless devices in the house/network. You may find it improves things to assign these addresses manually rather than automatically. You will have to determine from your router manual, the permitted range of addresses which will be something like 192.168.0.2 to 99. Obviously each device must be given a different IP address.

The above are all just work arounds and one day (Ha Ha) Apple may get around to sorting this. Finally just check you have the latest firmware on your router - unlikely to make much difference but you never know.

Finally if you are brave you can set up protected access via MAC addresses but this is a pain if you have lots of visitors like I do, as you have to set up a new protected MAC address each time a visitor arrives.
