True as long as it plays video without stuttering it should be ok.

Mine is fine for playing video on iOS 10.

Rest is just books and surfing

Scrolling while surfing is definitely an issue for the lag. For example, going on MR front page and scrolling down to see all the articles, the screen will go white and the webpage will eventually pop up. It seems to be worse for scrolling back up to the top.

I think the Mini 2 is behaving like it is low on RAM and it is page swapping everything. It was much worse under iOS 9 than iOS 10, but it ran perfect on iOS 8.

They'll not be power hungry from iTunes just converted ones, specifically for iPad 1 or 2, via a Mac app I use

Video playback is mostly a function of dedicated silicon for hardware decode acceleration. As long as the codec/profile is supported, then video playback should be fine.

Now browsing/searching for videos, I remember that being frustratingly slow on an iPad 3 on iOS 8+. Once the video starts playing though, it's smooth sailing.

Did the iPad mini 2 have better graphic chip than mini 2? Or is that seperate for video watching?

It's really bad in my experience. I've never seen iOS lag and respond so badly. Same applies to the iPhone 5s running the latest version of iOS. The one thing they have in common is the same SoC (A7).

It's better than iOS 9 on an iPad Mini 1. iOS 11 on the A7 devices stutters a lot and is jittery but doesn't have the same level of slow down and lag as iOS 9 on A5 devices.

Honestly if you can ignore the fact that it will be jittery a bit, and it will reload apps and web pages a 2 is a good upgrade if its just a short term thing.

Interesting Apple just announced iOS 12 with specific performance enhancements, including oldest devices and mini 2 will support iOS 12. Think this W/end should definitely trade in mini 1 now then?

iPad mini 2 (aka Retina mini aka mini with Retina Display) has FAR better GPU performance that the pokey, very outdated original mini (that only has 1/4 of the resolution).
