I can’t wait till Tuesday to see what Apple releases in regards to the iPad Mini line. I disagree with those that dislike the Mini. I hope they release a new model for its vast improvements. I like the size and form factor of the mini as I mostly bought it for reading books. Other models are just too bulky, and the newer iPhones are no good for reading books so I hope the mini line continues.

Not in terms of actual screen technology. Sure you can use the iPad mini to read but if that’s your primary use of the mini then I’d highly recommend the kindle paper white.

I use it for all kinds of things. I bought it primarily to read, but I also watch movies, play games, and do allot more with the device. A kindle would limit me just to reading.

It depends what you are reading. Kindle certainly excels for plain text. But if your reading involves technical documents with diagrams, code, equations etc, or are in PDF format, you are better off with an iPad.

There was an article on the main page about a possible mini5 coming next year sometime. They did say it would be more inline with the current entry level iPads and not a premium/pro device

Mostly text, but some books have pictures, charts, and diagrams.

I prefer larger screened iPads personally, though I'm glad the mini is continuing as I know a lot of people favour the form factor. That the mini 4 is still registering as a good chunk of iPad sales despite being so behind the others in tech suggests it's got a pretty dedicated following.

I find it a bit silly to compare a dedicated ebook reader to a general purpose tablet.
OP did say that was his primary use case for the mini though, with that being the case it's a reasonable point to raise

The OP already has a mini that he uses for reading and is looking forward to an upgrade for it. Bringing the Kindle into the discussion in that context doesn't make any sense... To me at least.

I love Apple and want to be an apple only guy. However I know Apple is not the best in every area. For TV Roku may be a better product. For ebooks, Kindle may be a better product. For business use Windows is a a superior OS, and so on. I prefer the Mac but I know Windows has a ton more business applications and they usually have more features, and launch faster on a standard HDD. Macs want a SSD which is a problem.

So now I'm confused. Do you want an updated IPad mini or do you want to replace it with a kindle?

If he said he mostly bought it for reading books, then another device that would allow him to read books for a fraction of the price, and is arguably better (battery life, eink screen) is worth at least considering, surely? If he does use the other functionality enough its a nonstarter then I'm certain he will say so

I prefer the iPad Mini because I have never used a Kindle. But maybe if I had used a Kindle I may prefer it. HOWEVER I have over 100 books in the ibooks format so I need to stay with IOS.

Reading books takes up about 35-50% of my usage of the iPad Mini. So I need a iPad for far more than just reading books.

Thanks for clarifying - well that's the decision made then! Just a couple more days wait until they will hopefully introduce a mini 5 :)

Besides if I move to Kindle I would lose and have to repurchase the 100+ books I have purchased. I cant afford that!
Sure, I find it's good to periodically review your options though, you might have found that if you offloaded your reading to a kindle you could have happily switched your other activities to iPhone/ mac. It's difficult when you're invested in an ecosystem, but also worth noting that if you did ever want to try a kindle, you'd be able to use the kindle app on your iPad for any books you buy from Amazon :)

Honestly, e-Ink displays are the way to go for reading.
