I definitely put the Apple Smart Folio on mine. It’s light enough to never notice it. The front cover folds back completely to one strip that gives a nice grip in portrait.

It's also, because of the magnets, easy to take off and put back on if you want to save a little extra weight at the moment.

Great post. Thanks. I am so trying to prefer the mini 6 to my Oasis but not so far...Maybe I'm struggling with the settings?
I find the Oasis easier to hold. I like the "bump" on the back and the bottom presses. I usually turn the settings to white on black when in bed. Have tried the mini 6 with the yellow page (can't remember what it's called?) and the lights turned down but still prefer the Oasis.

As I say, I really want to get used to the mini and might put my Oasis away for a week to give it a proper try. Can you post the settings you are using on your mini? And are you using a case? Thanks.
I’m using the regular black text on white screen but have screen brightness down to maybe 50% of max. I am using the smart folio case so that the mini doesn’t slide around on my lap at night. I encourage you to give it a try — sometimes you get hooked on something (I certainly was hooked on the Oasis) but need to give things time if you are wanting to make a change. That said, if you prefer your Oasis to the mini for reading that’s great too! You have both! And they are both great devices.

Oasis is $100AUD off now with Black Friday sale, I got one last sale but returned it was just too much at $299AUD still for what it does. I ended up with a 10th gen kindle was $116 and got a free amazon case. Can still get glare with it inside, obviously better outside.
The UI is painful, navigating and deleting books, swiping through pages looking at books is a lag fest lol. I only keep half a dozen books on it for that reason.
Would really like a mini 6 for books and a Sonos controller but it's hard to justify when I have a M1 12.9 iPad and 13 max.

Is the new Kindle much faster than the Oasis? And is the screen clarity or resolution any better? It looks like the screen on the new paperwhite is actually the same size as the Oasis (Amazon calls it 7”, but on Good E Reader, someone measured and compared the Oasis with the new Paperwhite, and they are exactly the same size: 6.83”). You are totally right about scrolling through the Library on Kindle…slow.

Hey everyone, just thought that I’d mention a tip i read on the ereader blog:

the new 2021 Kindle Paperwhite “Kids” edition (which is THE SAME as the ‘adult’ version) is on sale for $114, including Cover, and a 2-year warranty. Not that the warranty really seems that useful, as these are quite durable! LOL. With a trade-in, in my case for a 7-year old Paperwhite (2014), this version would cost me $87. That price is mostly due to the 20% discount applied for the trade-in; the old Kindle is valued at $5. 😀

It is the 8GB version, and no wireless charging coil. But, in every respect (I am told) it is the same as the ‘adult’ version, just with the option for parental controls added (which, honestly, I would have thought would be a feature in all kindles?). And, obviously, we can disable parental controls.

I am caught up in the kindle ecosystem and hadn’t considered other readers. I also own the 12.9 2021 iPad Pro and have -incredibly! - never tried to read a book on it! I will do that tomorrow! Good test I think.
The Kindle ecosystem is the only one viable. Kindle had over 83% market share of all e-readers in the U.S. in 2018. And this is in the U.S., where several other e-readers are available. Here in Brazil, Kobo and Nook are virtually non-existent, so Kindle is basically the only option.

With this kind of market share, I would not rely on any other ecosystem. I know that my library of e-books will be available for years to come, as Kindle is not going away. I am not sure about others. A few years ago, I bought some e-books from a local large publisher which had a proprietary e-reader, as they seemed more convenient than physical books. Now, this publisher is on the verge of bankruptcy and the e-books are nowhere to be found (or downloaded), so I lost them forever. I will no longer take chances. I only rely on Kindle and on the confidence that Amazon, with its $1.8 trillion market cap, will not disappear overnight with all my e-books. And that, if Amazon ever goes bankrupt one day, someone else will take over this huge chunk of the market and keep providing the Kindle e-books.

Be very careful about Amazon returns. Amazon sometimes closes accounts and you could lose access to your ebook collection if you return too many items.

I am so mad at myself that I didn’t realize this. I just bought the 2021 Kindle Paperwhite with the 20% discount for the trade in of my 2013 Kindle. Ugh. Anyway- if you are thinking about this Kindle it’s pretty awesome. I like my paper-like reading experience. I love my ipad for everything else, but reading- nothing else compares to the Kindle for me.

I never would have thought of this, either! I just happened across the info on the Good E Reader site/blog. I occasionally go there to see what’s new, as well as for reviews of the various tech out there for readers.

just going to add my two cents here

owning both an iPad mini and Kindle voyage, I would say in general the voyage is better suited for reading books/novels.

One big caveat here is if you are reading books in a foreign language which you are studying or are not fluent in, I would highly recommend the iPad mini. Using the dictionary lookup and highlighting on the kindle is a nightmare. It is extremely unresponsive and constantly highlights the wrong words. Additionally the dictionaries (at least those I have used) are often incomplete or do not provide enough information.

This really hinders my reading experience as I am trying to look up words I don't know and its a chore every time.

The iPad does these things much more smoothly and gives you many more options in terms of apps and settings.

Not entirely on topic but : My biggest gripe with Apple Books is that it doesn't use the entire screen space on my iPhone or iPad like Kindle does. I regret having gone to Apple Books back in the day (years ago (2018)) because Kindle is so much better (and it works with Libby). I've put in requests with Apple to allow us to modify the margins for years ... no dice.

Reading Apple Books on my iPhone 13 Pro Max is painful with all that wasted space and I prefer to read in portrait mode because it's easier to hold. Kindle app in portrait mode works perfectly and utilizes tons of screen space. I can't help but imagine Apple does this to push people to the iPad for book reading.

I'll probably make it a December project to switch to Kindle for my library going forward because of this.

Just started a new (similar (maybe?)) thread about reading news digitally vs print if anyone's interested?

IMO, the best reason for using an iPad Mini instead of a Kindle as an e-reader is if one owns ebooks from different sources (and perhaps different formats). The iPad can create a more cohesive ebook owning/reading experience.

The Kindle is locked in to a particular store. Even though tools like Calibre and plug-ins help break out of the box, there's no guarantee that they'll work in the future.

I have a bunch of books, comics, magazines, manuals, vintage catalogs, etc. in a variety of formats.

The PocketBook reader app for iOS gives me a single interface to access all of my books regardless of format. Rather than bouncing between different store/format-specific reading apps, using a single app really helps make the iPad feel like a reading device.

To add onto this, if one watches for it, Woot (Amazon) has Kindle Voyages from time to time, for only around $40-50.

That was the premium device in 2014/2015 and it's what I use today (we have 3 around the house).

To this day there hasn't been an e-reader released with a screen as clear and as sharp (I've tried them all and continue to do so).

Granted - it's only 6", which I do realize is a deal breaker for some.
But -- premium screen for $40-50 can't be beat if one catches them getting sold.

They go quickly for a reason.
I love the Voyage as well. Hands down the best display ever on a Kindle. I have no idea why Amazon did away with it.

Likely for cheaper manufacturing costs.

Also, the Paperwhite is their bestseller and probably good enough for most that there wasn’t really a market left for the Voyage. Woot was selling a bunch of brand new Voyages last year after Amazon discontinued it.

With that said, Amazon should have at least used the higher contrast Voyage screen on their high end Oasis line.

I have to admit the Voyage was rather unimpressive for me. While I read a ton of books on the older Kindles the screen of the Voyage seemed somehow washed out and boring to me. I also have a Kobo Aura (if I remember the product name correctly) in the collection which has a slightly better screen with the option to make it more warm. Still not great and extremely sluggish when adjusting fonts and font sizes.

Voyage was the best kindle with the flip over origami case that makes it fit in pockets that the other wider models don't.

I juist sold my ereader and got myself a iPad mini.
If you only want to read books then sure a ereader is better for your eyes. If you want a media consumption device then get an ipad mini.

The thread title does in fact highlight “for reading”, thus all of our recommendations for an e-reader

My wife, an avid book reader, has a iPad Mini 6 and a new 6.8" Kindle Paperwhite.
I suggested she try and use the Mini 6 more, so she gave it a good try for about a month.
She just went back to the Kindle 6.8".

btw, you get a lot more text per page on the Kindle 6.8 than the 6.0. The area of screen between the margins increases a lot more than the ratio 6.8/6.0
