These are slighly off due to the exact aspect ratio on the phone, but basically even the largest iPhone is still sports 40%-ish less display area than the iPad Mini

It's a huge difference if you try them both in hand

Additionally, going from iPad Mini to the smallest iPad Pro is yet another massive leap
I'd pondered it and spent a lot of time demoing both ... they are just used totally differently due to how much larger the 11" iPP is vs the Mini

I have both the 14 Pro Max and the Mini 6 and would not classify them in the same size class; the difference is significant.

I thought about going that route ... and often wish I had ... might still!

Any quick pros/cons of going that route?
Big pro is I needed Windows anyway for a couple of programs, also has a usable SD card slot. The main complaint is battery life but I think that is a gamer complaint as I seem to get an easy 6-7 hours for my use and weight which I don't notice as even on my lap I use the kickstand. I use the same BT keyboard as I use with my Mini and touchscreen capacitive stylus. All in all, it's a very capable mini Windows computer, great screen, on sale at a great price.

Agree 100%

Very different devices and optimal usage situations, despite the screen size numbers being seemingly kinda close

Those are both 16x9 so it’s not just slightly off. 8.3” Mini vs 6.9” Phone would be more like this:

Large phones are good enough for me in portrait mode to scroll through. The dimensions aren’t same but not worth a separate device like mini for me. I have iPad Pro if I needed bigger screen and it’s not like iPad mini can be held in one hand. Between my 16 inch MBP, iPad Pro, iPhone 13 PM, it covers most of my use cases.

Haven't picked mine up since I picked up a Lenovo Legion Go on a sale (16gb/1 TB/ 144hz refresh/ $500) and a whim. I'm not a gamer, use it on the go for Windows, it fits in the same case I used for my Mini. Different strokes, may not work for everyone but GREAT for me. ;)

Enjoy your device! Choice is great.

For me it's not really about one handed use, it's use and carry while traveling, mostly by motorcycle, and while camping, in a tent or on a picnic table. I find around 8 inch screen works best for me.

Yep. It doesn’t have to match exactly, just good enough to use.

I dislike large phones. I find them still too small and the aspect ratio too narrow for browsing and reading in portrait.

Personally, I carry my iPad mini with me everywhere daily. It has built-in cellular so I don’t have to deal with the hassle of hotspot.

Not sure what you mean - the Mini can be readily held in one hand. I have small hands and can easily palm it, thumb on one side, three fingers on the other.

iPad mini is not premium. iPad Pro is premium device. I just don’t get why some one would want iPad Pro and iPad mini with a iPhone screens much bigger than those tiny iPhone 4s or 5. I used to love my mini with iPhone 5, after moving to 7 plus barely used it. With my 13 PM, iPad Pro 13, iPad mini is redundant. If you want splurge, that’s great. If Apple wanted iPad mini to be premium, they probably could, but I doubt the volume of mini is worth.
Disagree - EVERY apple product is ‘premium’ and priced accordingly. Name me a more premium electronics manufacturer than apple? I’ll wait.

As for use case, the mini compliments my IPP 13 wonderfully. I also own a 16 pro max and each is used in different situations. I like to think I have all bases covered and so far I’m right.

The iPad Mini is priced premium, but is not a premium offering in terms of its specs
Most notably, the screen, which is the #1 component of importance for a tablet

Apple is a mass consumer device manufacturer. Nothing premium or selective about Apple. Gone or those days Apple was premium or luxury. Vision Pro and probably iPad Pro are more premium. iPhones are commodities, so are most smart phones. Ipad Mini is entry level device for Apple, and it gets the same treatment.

Priced and spec’d against all other mass market electronics manufacturers Apple is a premium brand. It’s not even up for debate.

Apple has some distinction on base and premium with in their product lines.

Base AW: S10 and earlier.
Premium AW: Ultra line.
Ipad
Base: regular iPad, iPad mini.
Mid segment: iPad Air
Premium : iPad Pro
Laptops:

Base: MBA
Pro line: MBP

Desktops:
Base: Mac mini
Mid :Mac Studio
Premium: Mac Pro

If you think iPad mini is premium, I would say look elsewhere. Apple will probably add more to Air than mini.

apple was never priced cheaper. Apple has clearly demarcated products lines, what they consider base and premium or pro line. Unfortunately iPad Mini is not premium like iPad Pro or even an iPad Air. It’s just a base product for Apple.

The point is this: there is absolutely no reason to have such a low refresh rate on the iPad mini. It’s almost jarring when you compare it to other devices in this price range. 120 should be the standard for all apple products in 2025.

Beyond just the refresh rate, it just doesn't even seem to be a high quality IPS screen for some reason I can't figure out.

If one goes to a store and compares all the Apple devices and their screens, you end up feeling like the iPad Mini is basically the worst screen they sell, on any device.

Is it "awful" -- no
But it should be a lot better than it is
