When I got the mini 4, I found it to be the perfect size for touchscreen gaming. Notably bigger display than a smartphone but still easy enough to use touchscreen controls. 😂

I wouldn’t want to play something like Genshin Impact on 9.7” or bigger iPads without controller either.

I mostly use the 9.7”+ iPads in landscape with the case cover acting as stand with majority of the weight on my tummy, legs or pillow. I just support it a bit via the edges with the occasional tap/swipe to turn pages. 🙂
I only use landscape when watching a film. Portrait at all other times.

For someone just surfing the web, reading books, and watching purchased content, 64GB is easily doable.
I agree, especially if you use iCloud and optimize storage.
I have a 64GB Mini and it is about half full, and use iCloud.

But I also have a 256GB 11" iPad Pro which I use for Adobe apps like Fresco, so maybe I am not a typical user.

Having both, I think the Mini is a bit niche, and you are basically paying more for less. If you do not need/want the compact size, the regular size iPad is better value and usability, IMO.

I think the price is ok. I don't know, price/value is so subjective.

Just to share my thoughts about the value of the Mini…
The Mini is a special device because it uniquely fills two important qualities (for myself and I’m sure others)—it’s the largest possible screen/device that is still light enough to hold for hours with one hand (not resting the iPad on anything). To me this allows it to be the ultimate casual consumption device—better than a large phone, and better than a big tablet. It’s therefore my most used device, of my many devices.
The caveat is that because it’s too big to wrap my fingers around, I’m only able to hold it one-handed for hours with the aid of a Pop Socket. But with other iPads, this is not feasible even with a Pop Socket.
