DigiTimes, citing its own research arm, says Apple is scheduling a 5-inch to 7-inch version of the iPad for the first quarter of 2011. After speaking with "upstream component sources," DigiTimes Research analyst Mingchi Kuo said these mini iPads will cost less than $400 and will be aimed at people who mainly want an e-reader to take on the road.

In other words, the smaller iPad would be a different product than the one that exists now. Yes, reading e-books is one of the iPad's primary functions, but the iPad is mainly a home device. It's best used on a couch or in bed, where you can sit comfortably with it. A smaller version, it seems, would be geared towards mobility, perhaps targeting people who like the idea, but find the iPad difficult to lug around.

The problem is that e-readers already fill that need, and better than a mini iPad could. The Kindle's E-Ink display is conducive to outside reading, and the device is thin and light enough to be held in one hand. Even if the iPad lost a few inches, it'd still need enough computing muscle to watch videos, play games, and render Web pages. The result would be a device that's too thick to be a comfortable e-reader and too small to be a powerful netbook substitute--in other words, the worst of both worlds.

If anything, the iPad should expand in size. The tablet's destiny--and I mean all tablets, not just the iPad--is to shake up the computer market, not to give Amazon and Barnes & Noble a hard time (though that's bound to happen as well). I want the iPad to become more like a computer, and less like a smartphone or portable media player.

I don't see Apple having different size iPad's so soon. They may have a smaller 7" and larger 12" in the future, but I doubt it would be only after one year. If someone wants something smaller, buy an iPod Touch. But honestly, people are gonna complain that it's too big or too smaller no matter what sizes Apple offers. Even if Apple came out with a 5" iPad and 7", there would be people complaining "Well the 7" is too big, but the I think the 5" is too small. I hope Apple comes out with a 6" iPad this spring."

They already did - Skynet sent an apple rep back three years with the iPad nano so it could use the device as a way to find John Conner. He botched the assignment however when he allowed it to be released as the iPod touch instead...

It was the fold@home iPad app that spawned Skynet so it was really a self fulfilling prophecy.

"There is no fold@home iPad app!"

That's what they want you to think .........

.

the only apple product that is perfect nano size is, the iPod nano.

I still remember for months and months people were convinced that any day now Apple was going to release an iPhone nano, I'm only assuming that those people are still waiting.

Oh god no. I'll NEVER want to use something the size of that monstrous JooJoo tablet.

this would tie into apples patents on screen back lighting using the sun and other light sources as back lighting.

i have also heard before of the 5 and 7 inch ipad possibility, im sure its just prototyping right now.

Have we already forgotten about the iPod touch?

With a large iPod Touch being released recently, we didn't even have the chance.

There are other companies that have been already selling 5" tablets before the iPad. That 5-7" seems to be a great size to have media functions, web browsing and email.

I believe that Apple have been long considering the options and somewhere in a German bar we'll soon find a prototype.

The iPad is a great device, but I think it's screen should have been slightly larger say right on 10", an this would require a slightly larger IPS display and could be done without increasing the iPad size physically, by way of halving the bezel thickness (black border). I personally wouldn't want any smaller than the current iPad.

I think it should be smaller. I just picked up my Archos 5 32GB flash model after 1 month of neglect to update the firmware. I have to say the size and weight are very nice after handling the iPad for a whole month. The screen is a bit smallish. Something about twice the size (roughly half an iPad) and less weight would be sweet!

its 9.7"

....the difference is negligible.

No thanks dont want smaller as this ruins the whole device, the larger the better. You dont want to be squinting at the screen and having issues with finger input because everything is a lower resolution. I love the size and weight of the iPad.

Smaller doesn't mean lower resolution. It can actually be the same or higher resolution on a 5" or 7" screen. Something not as heavy. It wouldn't replace the iPad, it would be an option. Different strokes... :p
