I’ve never had any issues like this before but after “upgrading” to iOS 14.4 scrolling on my iPad Pro 10.5 is horribly jerky. It doesn’t matter what app. Safari, YouTube, Twitter, etc. All of them. Scrolling is jerky across the board. Reboot didn’t help. Anyone else seeing this?

Are there any apps taking up processing power in the background?

I too am seeing this with my Pro 10.5. I think I'd seen some mentions of that problem on these forums somewhere as well.

Does this happen mainly when plugged into power? And/or after unplugging while using it?

I’ve seen this issue for a year or better now. It happen about 14.1 update.

I find if I unplug power, turn off and back on... it seems to work fine.

YMMV

Since I bought my 10.5 it's been an absolute rocket. I usually upgrade right away and have not noticed it slow down much over the years.

14.4 has destroyed my 10.5. There is so much choppiness across the OS and does feel noticeably slower. Not happy so far!

Yes exactly! I've never had a single problem until 14.4

If you have zoom and/or assistivetouch enabled try turning those off in accessibility. I had issues on my 2020 11" before finding those to be the culprits.

Same issue on my iPad Pro 2020. it’s definitely another stupid software but very jarring because pro motion is supposed to be buttery smooth.

Most people don’t have than enabled on iPad to begin with. This issue is Definitely part of a larger issue like the iPhones having choppy animations and delays when trying to swipe up to go home. There’s a 30 page thread on it. So far iOS 14 has been a dumpster fire.

In the past apple tended to make sure the latest iPhones and iPad ran amazing on new versions of iOS. Now our devices run worse than an iPod touch with iOS 6 on it. I’m only half kidding because animations used to be essentially pre-rendered and simple. Now everything is iOS is dynamic and depends on tons of other processes. Things have gotten immensely complex. And while I do give apple credit for much less app crashes than in years past, the smoothness and polish on iOS simply not what it used to be.

When apple introduced the 10.5 iPad Pro with Pro Motion it was FLAWLESS. It was a key selling point. Now....with 14.4 our iPads alternate between smooth and stuttering by the minute when scrolling.

I’d also like to add I did some research and this stuff was reported and feedback left for apple during the beta process , according to some Reddit posts. Both regarding iPad choppiness as well as the iPhone issue swiping up to go home.

This too is becoming a pattern with apple, release public betas and ignore a ton of the feedback. I thought the point of apple doing a public beta program was to FIX MORE BUGS. Unless it was just one of the many PR stunts apple has been doing in recent years.

I know this is typical cliche stuff but it’s well known Steve Jobs used to literally “pixel peep” to make sure things were damn near perfect aesthetically with software. Sure the green felt was silly but there was simply a polish that doesn’t exist today With their software. It’s juuuuuuust good enough to keep us hooked. Which in the end I guess is their point.

I’m having the same issue on my iPad Pro 10.5 iOS 14. There’s a lot of stutter and lag when scrolling through web pages and home screen. It fixes itself automatically but starts to happen again after 1-2 minutes. Didn’t notice it on iOS 13. Although when I move very slowly in for eg, Home Screen I see some frame rate drops. It happened on iOS 13 also but not this stuttering thing that I‘m seeing more and more on iOS 14.

Turn on dark mode and see if that helps, I notice everything is much smoother in the evening when dark mode kicks in.

No change for me on IpadOS 14.3. The randomly unresponsive screen has been an issue since the white spot, so not new...

10.5 Pro and yeah I’ve been noticing more stuttering when scrolling than usual after 14.4, but doesn’t sound as bad as yours.

Have you potentially accidentally limited the frame rate in accessibility settings? (settings -> accessibility -> motion -> limit frame rate)

If limit frame rate is ON, it disables ProMotion and will make things look a lot more laggy. If it is OFF, then something else is wrong.

The only change was installing 14.4. Limit frame rate is not enabled.

I made a video about this issue. This stuttering thing starts to happen at around 0:22 and remains like that almost till the end.

It’s NOT the OS. It’s thermal or battery throttling. The OS is telling your battery and CPU the battery is toast. Slow down the CPU and GPU significantly. We can’t tell but you are most likely at best getting 50% or less of your Max Performance.
