iPad Pro iPad Pro 11” Hairline Crack

Hi Guys,

Had my iPad Pro since February and I’ve just noticed a 1cm scratch/crack in the centre of the display, despite never having dropped it with the iPad kept in a folio case.

The crack is deep enough for me to be able to feel it with my nail. The crack is causing colour distortion when I’m on a white or light colour page.

What would your advice be here? Any advice greatly appreciate!

It would only be covered if Apple found the crack to have resulted from a manufacturing defect. A friend had similar with a HTC phone that she hadn’t dropped, but they just said that she must have done.

Worth a try, but if they don’t agree that the iPad hasn’t been accidentally damaged, it’s £476.44 for a screen repair in the UK including shipping fee. In that case I think I’d live with it, as the repair is expensive and you get charged the same whether it’s a hairline crack or the screen is completely smashed.

Not sure how it would affect resale value but I think I’d rather sell and put towards an update in the future than pay for a screen repair where that is more than half the cost of a new device.

As the other reply stated, I doubt that Apple will consider the hairline crack a manufacturing defect. I know that AC+ can add to the price of a device, but it really pays off when bad things happen. You'll need to decide whether to live with the crack or have it repaired. You may be able to use a repair service other than Apple and save some money that way.

hairline cracks are covered under warranty only if there is NO impact damage.

Apple should fix it, they fixed one for a family member that I know about.

They’ll fix it for free. My older brother bought his 11” 512GB on eBay with a hairline crack in it for $550.00. Then he mailed it to Apple, and they fixed it for free.

This was the same device that I tested against my 1TB model for a few weeks.

I have a hairline crack on a 12.9 2018 iPad Pro. Didn’t see it for a week, but there was a chip due to a 180 somersalt onto a hardwood floor.

Kept a close eye on it since then. It’s not worth it to have the screen replaced at $849 Cdn. It was in a protective case but the case. Was open in book mode and I was just sitting down to do dialysis.

I gotta shrug; I’ve got no intention of selling it and I’ll buy a new iPad Pro when they come out. I can still use the pencil, no colour distortion, sound is ok, network connection unaffected, etc.

These hairline cracks happen. You could just install a screen protector and never see it. If there was no chip apple would surely fix it though.

For future reference the $5.99 Apple care is not a bad idea though. You will easily get your money back in resale down the road. Or just having it fixed for $30 bucks.

Apple will replace hairline cracks if there is just one and if there are no impact marks. It’s been said before in the thread and I can confirm it.

Thanks for the idea about the screen protector. Any specific one(s).

I had applecare+ (or whatever it's called) on an LC2, Lc475, Powerbook, various Macbooks and Macbook Pro's. Even on my first/2nd iPad. But having taken medical retirement and rarely leaving my house I just didn't bother getting it on my 9.7 or iPad Pro. There is an impact mark and I wouldn't have lied abput it even if no impact mark, As I said above, no intention of selling; I just give my old computers away.

Had I depended on this for work/school I would be more pissed at myself. I mean, it's just an iPad (dialysis is my #1 concern). The fact that it still works, apparently without ill effect, is good enough for me.

The iPad has been kept in both a folio and flip case, and the only time it could have occurred is while using the pencil, as I didn’t notice it when I was at work, used the iPad the same night in bed in the dark using the pencil, then noticed the blemish the next morning straight away.

My issue is that it’s in the very center of the display, and the blemish is causing the colour to distort underneath it, which makes a sort of ‘rainbow’ effect.

Is there anything I can do to remedy this myself? Would any screen protector fix the colour issue?

It looks like a scratch to me. It is a little deeper than normal, so this is why the rainbow affect is happening to you. I would say to buff the scratch with compound to reduce it some, but buffing the screen will remove the oleophobic coating on the display in that specific area. And you would have a noticeable circular motion area on the screen where it looks different in hue to the rest of the screen.

Just add Apple Care+ to it for $5.99 a month, you can do this right on your iPad. And if it does turn in to a crack or broken screen by accident. Apple will replace your screen for $29.99

I think it will hide it. Luckily it is only a scratch. My first iPad Pro 11” 64gb was scratched just like yours and had the exact same rainbow, only really visible on white websites. I would try a screen protector and see what happens. I’m certain it’ll hide it fairly well. Especially a matte screen protector.

Oh I didn’t think this would hide the rainbow effect caused by the scratch. When you did this on your previous iPad did it hide it? I can live with the scratch if a screen protector will hide the rainbow.

I just want to say a big thanks for your recommendation. I bought a matte glass screen protector and it hides the scratch perfectly. I actually prefer the matte finish to the normal glass.

That is awesome. I’m glad it worked out. I remember how bothersome it was with my last 11” iPad Pro.

I think that sometimes that rainbow effect can be caused by a scratch in the oleophobic coating. You might want to check out the possibility.

I can attest to Apple replacing a device with defective glass and no drop. They replaced my Apple Watch with no AppleCare for free when some fluke of nature shattered the screen and the aluminum body had no damage at all. I have no idea how it broke and they replaced it with no questions after seeing the photos.

Yep, not a manufacture hairline crack at all ( they originate from the side ). This looks like a quartz ( specific type of sand ) scratch. Probably a single piece stuck to your case, you folded over the cover and carried it and/or had it in a backpack with a book or something on top. The walk or sway would cause the quartz to dig in causing this type of scratch.
As said before, buffing would make it mostly go away.

When it shows the rainbow effect like that, it means it is a pretty deep scratch. If he buffed the display then it will remove the oleophobic coating. Then the entire area that was buffed will look purple in color when the display is off.

I tried it myself.. I had a 11” iPad Pro. My kids scratched it severely. They are so clumsy and careless with electronics, I think they just ran in to things using the display as a shield against bodily harm.

Anyways, I buffed the scratch down to almost invisible. And it looked worse. I would’ve had to buff the entire display, and it just wasn’t worth it. I sold it. If I would’ve left the scratch alone and just got over it, I surely would have just kept it.
