I had exact same issues. Started 2 weeks out of warranty so My device which cost over a grand only lasted a year. Won’t pay another £600 to get it replaced. The second gen was a total sham.
To be fair, by your own admission your AppleCare+ coverage had expired 2 months prior to you bringing in the device. Had it been under coverage it likely would have been replaced.
The coverage itself is not a waste of money. It just sucks that due to a number of seemingly common issues more of us feel the need to have to purchase it.
That's the real point. The retail price is *not* the retail price. The true retail price is the device plus AC, but in many cases you can no longer buy AC, so you have to pay for AC+.

Congrats! I plan on keeping mine for awhile.. I bought my iPP on AT&T Next plan, once it’s paid off... I’ll upgrade to the 4th generation iPP, but I won’t rush to get it.
Its still feels strange being able to hook up a flash drive or hard drive to it, having tried a mice.. I feel the iPad is designed for touch input. But the future is mighty bright for the iPP.
Thanks. I picked up a pretty good deal on a 256GB Cellular Space Gray model. My 9.7 iPP was 128GB Cellular, so I've doubled my iPad storage. I just moved my SIM card over to the new one.
I'm enjoying this 3rd gen. 12.9 iPP so far. Definitely feels speedy and very responsive, although I thought the same of 2nd gen. 12.9 iPP until I had problems with it. My 9.7 iPP was feeling slightly sluggish especially switching between it and my iPhone XS Max.
Hoping to use this one for awhile and have AC+ in case any problems arise like on the 2nd gen. iPP that I had.
Love my iPP Gen 2 from 2017. The best Apple Product I ever had and I still have my Mac Plus in the cellar (so I had lots of them)! Never saw any reason to upgrade to the Gen 3 because it’s thicker and heavier with the cover and has no other noticeable improvements for me.
Had this display unresponsiveness too but after the last 13.2 upgrade it seems to be gone....
