Why is backlight such a desirable feature?
It makes using the keyboard easier in dimly lit situations. I found it to be a great benefit when using my MBP in hotels where I didn't want all the lights on (and there by disturbing my family), and also when using it in my bedroom and not wanting all the lights on just to type. In both cases I wasn't working in complete darkness but the backlit keyboard definitely helped.

Interesting. Always thought th light off the screen plus those leet touch typing skills would be enough.

Given the high price tag, I would have hoped that Apple would have included features that provided this. I think its really something that they should have included.

Not a deal breaker, but I find it to be a great feature. I don't type in the dark, but even in low light or dimly lit situations, a backlight is a useful feature.

Given the fact that iPad likely won't be tethered to the lightning cable all the time, I also think there could be a potential drawback with the lighted keyboard attached to the iPad, which could draw more battery power, which I would rather have extended battery life over a lighted Keyboard.

I also think we need to give products time to mature, being this is a newer accessory, not a mainstream product like the iPad or iPhone. Apple will likely make improvements in the future on the keyboard, but I don't necessarily see a back lit Keyboard being one of them any time soon.

Given the price of the non-backlit, I don't think lots of people would buy it anyway. It would cost less to buy a used ipad and use it as a backlit keyboard :D

I disagree. What really makes the 'Pro' moniker term for the iPad Pro, is the smart keyboard. I think it's a wildly popular accessory and it's well-made, and it also acts as a cover for the iPad. For what you're receiving, it's a product that accentuates the iPad nicely and competes the desk top experience.

I'd add the Pencil to that myself. :D but otherwise I agree with you.

For note taking in class try Nebo by Myscript. They have fantastic handwriting support including formatting and diagramming. Even if you use the text elsewhere you could take notes here then select all, copy and paste elsewhere. You should try it just to watch how fast it changes handwriting to text.

I'm using the original iPad Pro 12.9. After 19 months my battery is starting to fade.

Define "fade"

Define "fade"

What neutrino23 is saying with "Fade" or
Weakening, is after 19 months the lithium ion battery expectancy levels have dropped or have not rebounded to what they once were, likely due being used with heavy tasking without being charged regularly or depleted on a regular basis. Of course this is speculation, but that's exactly what fade means.
