For those who purchased an M1 Pro 11 to supplement your MBA/MBP, do you sometimes wish you went with the 12.9" instead? I'm a student who uses this device to handwrite notes and solve math problems and I was told the split-screen experience on the 12.9 is much better. However, I was not allowed to play with the 12.9" when I picked up my 11" Pro due to Covid restriction which makes me wonder if I should order the 12.9" online and return this one?

you know I’ve had both and there’s no such thing as a perfect iPad for me.
I used the 12.9 2018 for a year and I love split screen mult tasking. Writing notes is excellent on it. BUT not in school and I sometimes used this for work. But my main use is browsing on the couch. And bar none the 11 is perfect for this. It’s 95% my use case and 11 is more comfortable.
interesting I swapped to the 12.9 this week while I like it for note during training via zoom, my use case is still casual and on the couch or bed and 11 is more comfortable than the 12.9. So I went back to the 11.
I think consider your use case and go from there.

I find it fascinating that some guys rake in a million dollar or more per year just by talking about this question... which iPad should you buy... which iPhone is the best... how to use the iPad for note taking... it's completely amazing. It seems like people nowadays wouldn't even know how to wipe their behinds without a Youtuber telling them how to...

I have an iPad Pro 11" 2021, my first iPad, and happy with it.

I went through this in 2018 - bought the 11 and returned it for the 12.9 because the split screen experience was much better. For me. Two full-view apps side by side is so much more useful than one main, one mobile view. I don't find the 12.9 with magic keyboard to be a portability problem at all.

I have a 16in MBP on the desk and the 12.9 is my main mobile productivity device these days - the 11in wouldn't be big enough for me (I've had the 10.5 in the past and I also had 11in and 12in MacBooks, which were fine in their day but not for what I do these days - and forget split screen on 11in screens, it's torture).

Well,you're not wrong.

This was my main reason (multitasking) and sound is so much better on 12.9”

Here is your answer. Each has different advantages and disadvantages.

I tried both and preferred the size of the 11 in day to day use. If you’re going to use it at a desk, the 12.9 is better since the screen is unquestionably better. But i like to use it as a tablet sometimes and i found the 12.9 unwieldy.

Love my 11 Inch. I read books on it daily. Had the 12.9 and it’s just too big to handle everyday for my tasks. If you sit on a desk with a magic keyboard then the 12.9 would be better. But then again I would use my MBP.

Besides the obvious screen improvement on the 12.9” here is what I’ve found
  1. Typing on the 12.9” Magic Keyboard is better than the 11”.
  2. Reading is better on the 11”. The 12.9” is too wide in landscape or too tall in portrait
  3. Drawing is better on the 12.9”. Larger canvas is almost always better
  4. Note taking seems about the same on both but because the 11” is more portable I find that I’m more likely to have it near me.
  5. Using the iPad to remote into another computer is much better on the 12.9”. The screen more closely matches a notebook screen size.
  6. Using the on screen keyboard in portrait on the 11” is much better than on the 12.9”. The 12.9” is too wide.
  7. Office type tasks are about the same on both with a mouse and keyboard. I don’t find that the screen size makes much difference.
Decide which tasks are the most important to you and make a choice

I‘m a huge fan of the 11” iPad, but I just recently bought a 2020 12.9. I like the feel—the comfort of the biggest screen in a reasonable package i.e. iPhone 12 Pro and iPad Pro 11. However, I now have the 12 Pro Max and the iPad Pro 12.9. They’re both bigger than I would like. FWIW, I think a 6.2-6.3” phone and a ~12” iPad would be ideal for me.

Recently I’ve been more about utility over comfort. Bigger battery in the Max allows me a few extra hours away from the charger. 12.9 allows me to, ironically, “comfortably“ multitask because of its bigger canvas. I may come crawling back to the smaller, more comfortable sizes in a year or 2, but right now I’m enjoying the extra screen and battery that comes with these bigger devices. I see cases for both sides of the fence. So, I always go back and forth and back and forth before settling into something Lol

I have both right now (they’re both 2020 models) and I like to “carry“ my 11” iPad Pro while my 12.9” is my desktop machine and my one device I take with me when I travel thanks to Cellular.

I originally got the iPad Pro 11” 2021 but then returned it for the 12.9” 2021 (paired with the Magic Keyboard) as it fits my needs better since I don’t use a computer/laptop outside of it, so it is essentially my “laptop” but not one I need to use for tasks that would require an actual laptop... if all that makes sense.

Depends on your use case. I went through in 2018. Bought the 11. Returned it. Too small. Bought the 12.9. Returned it. Too big. Bought the 11. Really tried it out. Returned it. Bought the 12.9 and settled on it. 12.9 replaces a notebook (the one with paper) for me and while it's more bulky, the only true downside is that it's terrible for ebooks for me (something 11 shines on). Everything else I find the 12.9 far better for my use case.
