My girlfriend got the 11“ 2020 a year ago and I always felt that it‘s a tad too small. I ended up getting the 12,9“ 2021 during Prime Day and the size is perfect for me. Weight is not really that noticeable since I also have a 15“ MBP, this 12,9“ is going to come in handy for movie nights in bed.

Currently trying to get used to typing on an iPad display.

I was comparing both today before purchase as an upgrade to my 10.5. The 11 does not seem to give me that much more than my current one so I think I will go for the 12.9. It does seem very chunky though, and I don’t see it working well as tablet (no keyboard) unless naked else too cumbersome. Looking forward to it soon, and plan to use it both with and without keyboard.

I find it fascinating that some guys rake in a million dollar or more per year just by talking about this question... which iPad should you buy... which iPhone is the best... how to use the iPad for note taking... it's completely amazing. It seems like people nowadays wouldn't even know how to wipe their behinds without a Youtuber telling them how to...
this is why you should buy 3-layered toilet paper and not 2-layered toilet paper CLICK HERE! SUBSCRIBE! SIGN UP TO MY 5 HOURS HOW-TO-WIPE-YOUR-BUTT SKILLSHARE COURSE!

I have an iPad Pro 11" 2021, my first iPad, and happy with it.

Every youtuber covering Apple products has atleast 1 video about which iPad size to choose, and they basically copy what an other youtuber said.

Easy money.

It really comes down to personal preference. I have had two 12.9” iPads and am now going to the 11”. The large screen size is great for viewing, but can be a little awkward for other tasks. I tend to use it mostly with the keyboard as a laptop replacement type device. When trying to use it as a tablet, it is a little more difficult to hold, gets heavier quicker, and the on screen keyboard is too big. I actually use my smaller 9.7” iPad more often for note taking and never had an issue. I find the smaller iPad works better for many tablet things and if you already have a laptop, why not have the smaller tablet.

You are right. Getting the 12.9" when you have a laptop is redundant. Although I also find the price of the bigger one hard to justify, I think would appreciate the multitasking/split-screen feature on the 12.9".

Funny I stumbled onto this thread. Recently bought the 2020 iPad Pro 12.9. Thought it was a tad big.

Bought the cellular M1 Pro 11". Now, for what I'm going to do, a laptop replacement route, I'm thinking the 12.9 might be better.

But will say this, on the couch, portrait mode is so satisfying on the 11".

12.9 is def better with the MKB. I prefer using it to a MacBook although it’s obviously not as capable. Not as enjoyable to hold for long periods of time. The larger screen is very nice though. Pros and cons to everything I suppose. I may end up going back to the 11” as I’m still within return period but I will definitely miss the size…

Truth is you can probably get used to either as both have their pluses and minuses.

For those who purchased an M1 Pro 11 to supplement your MBA/MBP, do you sometimes wish you went with the 12.9" instead? I'm a student who uses this device to handwrite notes and solve math problems and I was told the split-screen experience on the 12.9 is much better. However, I was not allowed to play with the 12.9" when I picked up my 11" Pro due to Covid restriction which makes me wonder if I should order the 12.9" online and return this one?
I Would return it

I’m going the other direction - returning the 12.9 to get the 11.

The XDR display on the 12.9 is amazing, but ultimately I don’t do enough HDR video to make it worth the additional bulk and weight.

Although the 12.9 on its own isn’t significantly heavier than the 11, the increased size and squarer aspect ratio means that the 12.9 generates a significant moment of inertia when holding it 1 handed with a Magic Keyboard or Smart Folio Cover. This makes the 12.9 feel quite massive, beyond what the nominal weight difference would suggest.

My other beef with the 12.9 is that there’s essentially no way to comfortably 2-hand thumb type in either portrait or landscape mode.

No, I'm enjoying my 11". And I'm using it mostly in bed and in portrait mode as a tablet, just like I have with the Air 2 I replaced it with. The only time it's ever in landscape is when I'm watching Youtube.

I started with the 11, then went up to the 12.9 and have no retreats! Much better screen overall, more engaging. I found the 11, just too small. I think its ok on the go for small tast, but for any meaninful work the 12.9 is the way to go. Have the MK for serious work or the cover just for general portability for the coffee shop etc. the thing is super light (without the MK). This display seems even better than my MBP to me…

I have a 2018 11 inch pro, im thinking of getting the new 12.9 and keeping both of them for well just consumption no work…..

If I bought it from walmart and after a week decided its not for me, do they let me return it or not? My ipads never leave my house

Guess I put it off for too long, walmart sold out again and the 1k price is finished

No regrets for me. I love my 11" pro. The size is perfect for me for sofa, patio and travel use. The main thing I want in a screen is evenness overall and sharpness of text with good contrast and my 11" has it.

But 11 inch been out for years, its nothing new, I mean why wouldnt it be comfortable…Id love to try a 12.9 for a week

Of course, that depends on what you mean by meaningful.

I do meaningful, indeed, what are to me mission critical tasks, on a 11” 2020 IPP.

I tried both for a week (each). I wouldn’t say the 12.9 is uncomfortable; it’s more like “clumsy”. The difference in portability and size / weight can be summed up as:

  • The 12.9 is a device I’ll bring with me when I know I’ll use it. If I‘m not sure, then I’ll likely leave it at home / on the desk connectors to the Magic Keyboard.
  • The 11 is a device I’ll bring with me when I think I might use it. If I’m not sure, I’ll bring it anyway just for the hell of it.
