iPad Pro 12.9 purchase conundrum ..

good day y'all,

I'm about to order a 12.9 wifi only iPP.

I'm going to use it for a personal medium size project, as an experiment I'm going to try to work exclusively on the iPad.

The apps I'm going to use are Pages, Numbers and Keynote.

I had made up my mind about buying the 256GB version + pencil and use my Apple wireless keyboard with it.

Now that I'm abaout to order it, I'm wondering if I really need the pencil and that maybe I should use the 100 bucks towards getting the 512GB version.

I've set my budget and would like to stick to it I must give the impression of being a responsible adult.

As a non artist has anyone found the pencil useful for editing docs, note taking, etc?

Why not hold off on buying the stylus, there's no reason why you need to have it on day one. Use the iPad with the keyboard and if you feel that its needed but it after the fact.

As for 256gb vs. 512gb. Do you need (or foresee yourself needing) anything over 256GB?

If your not an artist or someone who takes notes daily then you may not need the Apple Pencil, I do love mine but I use it daily to take notes, draw and even Photo edit in Affinity Photo. However if you don't plan on doing any of these things I wouldn't get the Pencil.

In regards to storage, do you download a lot of TV Shows and movies from iTunes? If the answer is yes and you like to keep content on your iPad Pro then I would get the 512GB if not then 256GB might be enough, just beware that once you have 256GB you can't add more storage afterwards.

Perhaps wait until iOS 11 is released. It will offer more Apple Pencil expanded capabilities and it will give you time to see if you would appreciate the Pencil. But for editing and note taking, I would ask yourself how much would you use it for those features.

It is a great Apple Pencil but expensive at the same time, if you don't use it daily or at least regularly then it probably won't be worth it. If don't store any music or TV shows/movies on your iPad or do anything thet takes up a lot of space like using Affinity photo editing tools or iMovie then you'll probably be more than happy with the 256GB.

Keep in mind that most will have this device of 3-4 years so size accordingly. But 256gb is a good median.

Unless your someone who downloads all those shows on the iPad, I've gone back and forth with the idea of a 256GB or 512GB, I download TV shows and films to my iPad and the 512GB will enable me to have all the episode of Game Of Thrones on my iPad

It certainly will (w/512gb of space), but I question if the majority need that much space and want to devote it to shows to such a degree.

In fairness, unless you're using uncompressed Blu-ray rips (in which case I don't believe 512GB is sufficient), 256GB should also be able to fit the complete Game of Thrones.

Having set up a Plex server recently, my mobile footprint on the iPad is much less now.

I dunno if/when I'll be getting the Pro2 12.9...but I'm starting to consider 256gb model to be very adequate (for me) and I never thought I'd be saying that.

Especially since I keep my devices for so long. There's also a part of me that doesn't want to reward Apple (for their half-hearted efforts to better the iPad) and don't see why I should splurge on the 512gb model.

Sidenote: While wanting to stick to a budget is a good way to being responsible, sometimes knowing when to push boundaries for long term benefits and knowing what other (hopefully short term in this context!) sacrifices you can make for this is too an important part of adulthood!

yes, the 14 day return applies to the Pencil (and any accessories you buy with the iPP).

Some excellent advice above.

I have the 256gb WiFi 12.9" and I think I've still got almost 200gb free (some movies, not many extra apps and my art doesn't take up much space. I am constantly deleting movies and things so this is a good storage size for me. )

Your present decision sounds like a good fit for you. Whatever you go with, enjoy your iPP.

I think Seagate actually has 5TB now. They're pretty inexpensive. Iirc, I paid around $110 per drive for my 4TBs during some sales last year (I use them for offsite backup to the Synology server).

Personally, I went with the 512GB model this year. I have a 256GB Pro 9.7 and it just gave me a message that I should switch iCloud Photo Library to Optimized because I was running low on storage. I have less than 20GB in the iCloud Photo Library but I do store tons of manga and comics (DRM'd comiXology stuff) locally on my device.

I do agree, the Pencil, you can always buy later. Adding local storage to the iPad, not so much. Hence, if you're unsure whether 256GB will be enough I'd opt for the bigger storage for safety.

At the beginning of my iPad search, I actually almost went with the 64GB version as I'd had no problem with my old iPad and iPhone at the same sizes.

I don't have the need to store a bunch of entertainment or media all at once as I stream mostly from my own Plex server and other services, and I'll eventually delete comics once I've read them (they're so easy to re-download at a moments notice.) Almost all of work my related documents and files are in services like Google Drive. There's almost no need for me to store anything on the iPad.

What pushed me to go bigger was this: I'd not paid much attention to iPads over the last few years, but looking into them again, I saw how much potential they have for both photo editing and video editing, something I would use it for. That's when I went for the 256GB; so I could load a bunch of working video and photo files.

The 14 day return policy applies to any Apple products I think, if buying from the Stores, ask the staff to confirm. My side did ask if I wanted to return my Pencil with the iPad Pro (found 64GB too limiting) though

And hey, adulthood may be crap but then again, there's a lot to look forward to!

That will be about 150 SGD per drive, which is really cheap for 4 TB drives! Maybe I should consider them as my ultra-portable backup, get those multiple drive enclosure or something
